One could argue this is not the first time the seasoned doom/black metal band Agnes Vein from Thessaloniki, GR has come up against a tough situation. Ever since the “…Of Chaos And Law” EP in 2004 and the long line of liveshows and releases started to unravel, the road hasn’t been favourable. They took the time necessary to prepare and release their debut album, utilizing the experience from sharing the stage with Manilla Road and Brocas Helm among others.In 2010 the relationship with Venerate Industries would form. “Duality” made an impression in the underground metal scene manifesting the influences of Bathory, Candlemass, Neurosis and Celtic Frost and came to be a landmark. The process that is the preparation for an Agnes Vein album took another 3 years, without any shortcuts and by the spring of 2013, “Soulship” came to define the status of the band, driven by a darker and experimental mood.The slow, heavy and bleak sentiment of the record wore off on the whole band’s existence and in the years that followed the struggles would mount up. In 1982, the band currently known as Alien Force started playing music under the name Zeyking. The band was started by the two brothers Henrik Rasmussen (guitar) and Michael Rasmussen (drums) and the style was already then classic heavy metal. Together with Peter Svale Andersen (vocals) and Michael Østerfelt, (bass) Zeyking released the single “Get It Out”. In 1985 the band changed its name to Alien Force and with a record deal with Telaeg Records, released their first LP “Hell And High Water”. The record is nowadays a classic in the NWOBHM underground, being reprinted several times. Tracks from the record are still used for the live concerts the band plays. In 1986 Alien Force released their second LP “Pain And Pleasure” via their own record company Alien Records, since their previous label had close. This was regarded as yet another classic of the genre and much trafficked since then, in all its physical forms. They had my attention when I heard the first drum beat on “Victims” – the song took off & became this blackened drama where tension looked into the empty eyes of intense, only to realize there is no future, only now. By the time “Throne of Grace” wraps it hands around your throat, feedback starts to poke in your eyes as the drums are knocking away at your joints. Expression of the realest kind is what Crimes of Faith is all about in my book; no matter what the speed of the song, Balaclava will make encounter those emotions you might want to stay asleep. Deep down in the underbelly of this music you will find ancient blues riffs that when played with right kind of rage can be hailed as apocalyptic blues. As the record plays on, it begins to open up & they really start to let the weirdness in, or at least that is what you think, because at the drop of a dime Balaclava will drop the heavy hammer. Fuck putting things in boxes, that just stops growth, what I appreciate about this band is how free & open they are; if this heavy, I feel weightless. Balaclava will execute you with the amount of melody that Crimes of Faith is packing in it’s arsenal. Smashing up from the Bay Area underground, Black Cobra is ready to take the heavy music world by storm! Formed in 2002 by Rafa Martinez (Acid King, -16-) and Jason Landrian (ex-Cavity) this duo has been laying waste to audiences, taking on all comers, and leaving the remains to rot in their wake. Their sound is a crushing mix of High On Fire-tinged stoner metal and Buzzov*en’s Southern-fried sludge, with a heaping dash of Melvins-style drone to wash it all down. The two piece is the product of years of work between Jason and Rafa. Both originally from Miami, Florida, work started on Black Cobra while home visiting parents over the holidays. This lead to the trading of a series riffs through the mail and visits to each others residences in NY and LA for sporadic practices. The year 2004 saw the release of a raging 3 song demo maxing out at a whopping 6 minutes in length. The year 2006 saw the release of the 11 song goliath that is Bestial followed by relentless touring in America and Europe. 'Black Sabbath' is the eponymous debut studio album by Black Sabbath. Released in 1970, Black Sabbath's debut album is the birth of heavy metal as we now know it. Compatriots like Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple were already setting new standards for volume and heaviness in the realms of psychedelia, blues-rock, and prog rock. Yet of these metal pioneers, Sabbath are the only one whose sound today remains instantly recognizable as heavy metal, even after decades of evolution in the genre. Circumstance certainly played some role in the birth of this musical revolution - the sonic ugliness reflecting the bleak industrial nightmare of Birmingham; guitarist Tony Iommi's loss of two fingertips, which required him to play slower and to slacken the strings by tuning his guitar down, thus creating Sabbath's signature style. Hailing from New Jersey, Blasphematory proudly play old-style DEATH METAL. The group was formed in 2018 by Abazagorath founder Chris Warhead and member Joe Aversario after unplanned rehearsals, which eventually led into the writing and recording of a demo titled Depths of the Obscurity. Blasphematory continued to develop their sound, which is largely influenced by time-tested American and Swedish styles whilst combining the dark melodic elements of the band’s black metal origins, all of which culminated in the recording of their first full-length, also titled Depths of the Obscurity. Subsequently, Blasphematory were joined by Tom Deceiver of Altar of Gore as second guitarist, and this expanded lineup is responsible for the writing and recording of the band’s newest full-length, The Lower Catacombs. Righteously filthy but displaying even sharper songwriting prowess, The Lower Catacombs picks up exactly where Depths of the Obscurity left off and goes even deeper into the low-and-slow death metal abyss, creating a more focused and complete representation of Blasphematory‘s sound. While references to Funebrarum and Disma are still valid here, Blasphematory exude a charisma that’s undeniable: crushing, ignorant DEATH METAL only for maniacs; all others will be summarily crushed.
