  • Out from a concept of misery and suffering, our feeble and dying world is the subject of a new hymn to its demise. “Mortal Coil” is Dödsrit's third full-length, featured on a yet short career though wholly filled with soul-drenching moments. Featuring four tracks, Dödsrit's "Mortal Coil" hails the smothering ashes of purgatory's flames by forging a wall of soultearing riffing, blistering belligerence conjoining melody with aggression, a genuine blaze of cacophony and heart-wrenching melancholy. Consuming all in its path, this relentless maelstrom of grief finds its vision on the thunderous production - utterly powerful and blisteringly organic in all its dynamism. Such sonic virtues get sheerly enhanced by the lively rhythmic section and uncompromised ferocity. Whether on blastbeating outbreaks, D-beat infused vigour, or further atmospheric escapades, pulsing impulses carry an expression and sense of craftsmanship that amazingly translate emotions into cataclysmic beats. Drenched in anguish, a scourged narrator of tragedies spews every single word with the blood and fiery distress of a heart burdened by the weight of our sorrowed existence, a shivering performance of a tongue absorbed in the (dis)comfort of eternal grief. Out under the banner of Wolves of Hades on Vinyl & CD, and The Hell Command on Cassette, “Mortal Coil” is a eulogy to the world in flames - to the hell we call our home. The Varukers was one of the first groups of the UK 82 movement - the second generation of punk rock that took the spirit of '77 and merged it with the incessant beat of NWOBHM - responsible for creating UK hardcore. Heavily inspired by Discharge, The Varukers released three 7"s in the early '80s before this, their first and most definitive album, came out in 1983 on the legendary Riot City Records (Vice Squad, Abrasive Wheels, Chaos U.K.). Back in print on LP thanks to Radiation Reissues, "Bloodsuckers" is one of the definitive pieces of early UK hardcore, full of Sabbath-inspired guitar work, pounding rhythms and aggressive, anarchistic lyrical content. • Either intentionally or unwittingly this is a band experimenting with extremes. Formed in 1985 when Thatcherism swooped over England and scalped the North East, Hellbastard admit to being ‘’too metal for punk, too punk for metal’’, instead coining the term ‘’crust’’ as a way to feel at peace within themselves whilst simultaneously starting a sonic war that shocked the nerves into spools of frayed tape. With Malcolm ‘’Scruff’’ Lewty on guitar and vocals, Ian ‘’Scotty’’ Scott on bass and vocals and Phil Laidlow on drums, it was all captured with their classic Ripper Demo debut release in 86’. But really, it's all encapsulated right here with this reissue also containing the follow-up demo-lition from ‘87 - Hate Militia. Both are perfect ways to establish the nightmarish worlds, of death camps and dark sides, that wildly writhe within his group’s menacing worldview. • Containing the hits that were only deemed misses by the critics that condemned Oi! as some kind of subcultural fad that favoured football and violence way above the bloody good tunes that should by rights occupy the higher rank, 4 Skins, The Unreleased Radio & Studio Sessions encapsulates that energy at its finest. From formidable swarms of police brutality and political injustice, the underlying (and unyielding) socio-political messages experienced from the streets that resonated with every estranged clockwork skinhead of the day are bound to be ticked on every track. After the atmospheric crash of One Law for Them, dropped in amongst the Radio and blistering Bumper Sessions with Evil sitting squarely in its unpolished centre is the ska-inflected gallop of Seems To Me, an unreleased tune reinforcing the notion that there was more to Oi! than meets the laces. 40x30 cm folded poster included, 1-5: Recorded in July 1981 for radio session that was never broadcast. 6-7: Unreleased single, due to be issued in 1983 (Secret SHH 149). 8-12: Recorded at Bumper Studios in January 1981. 13: Demo. • Understand? is the fourth album by Chicago punk legends band Naked Raygun, released in 1989 through Caroline Records. After the visceral energy of their debut, 'Throb Throb', and the subtle refinement displayed on 'Jettison', the Chicago hardcore label rejecters did little to aid their claim with the brawny, scrappy 'Understand?' Packed with an onslaught of riffs, pummelling d-beat blasts and gang vocals galore, while rife with unkempt cynicism and aggression on the anthemic anti-social title-track or the snapshot of 'The Sniper Song,' Naked Raygun would only further cement their status as punk all timers on this seminal fourth record. • If the Misfits were one of the greatest punk bands then Walk Among Us released in 1982 is perhaps one of the greatest records in punk history. While Static Age and Earth AD showcased a band searching for an identity like a vampire for its next victim, Walk Among Us is almost sheer perfection. With a solidified lineup, fully grown-out devillocks (the Misfits trademark long spike of hair in the front) and the stabilizing presence of the somewhat pedestrian but agile arthur googy on drums, uber-misfit Glenn Danzig was finally able to match his zombie-elvis to a worthy musical foil. From the manic opening of 20 Eyes to the monster football chorus of Braineaters, there is nothing less than a sublime moment on this album from start to finish. Astro Zombies or I Turned into a Martian sound like songs to raise the dead by. a special bonus is perhaps the tenderest love song to decapitation (Skulls) in recent memory. Label: Miss999/Unofficial

  • Destroy All Monsters were a very influential band from Detroit, USA. From 1973 to 1985 they played anti-conformist music with a noisy and arty mix of psychedelic rock & proto punk. The band is known due to involvement of members of MC5 and The Stooges. They described their music as "anti-rock." Destroy All Monsters never found mainstream success, but earned some notoriety due to members of notable rock groups The Stooges and MC5 who joined the group. Although Destroy All Monsters never recorded a proper album, Sonic Youth singer/guitarist Thurston Moore released a three compact disc compilation of the group's music in 1994. This vinyl compile the Ron Asheton era of the band, three singles from 1978 & 1979, the catchiest, the rockiest tunes they did! • This compilation simply needs to be heard to be believed. Who knew that a psychedelic beat garage scene thrived in the pre-revolution Iran of the 1960s? As revealed herein, artists such as Googoosh and Kourosh and groups such as the Littles, the Flowers, and the Golden Ring did their best to muster echoes of the Shadows, the Ventures, the Beatles, and the Stones, delivering their lyrics in poetic Persian and keeping plenty of reverb on those rocking lead guitar riffs. With tons to discover on this fascinating musical voyage, where every track is captivatingly intriguing, making this LP essential listening for all open-minded connoisseurs. Also featuring Moha Jamin, Group Takhala La, Ojooba Ha, Penahi, The Rebels, Group Sayeed, and Shabah. Label: Survival Research Barcode: 0634438978398
  • A classic. Propelled by a political mission and some wicked bass playing, the gang of four released 'Entertainment' in 1979. Though King sings, "two steps forward, six steps back" (in At Home He's a Tourist), the only reason Gang of Four could have for stepping back is that they are so far ahead of the curve. This record is - without question - one of the most important records from the post punk era. and, while the album's title was almost certainly intended as sarcasm, this is also a really good listen. "I just wrote down, 'Who's the real ape?" said Murphy in a statement. "Humans look down on apes as primitive life forms, but we're just this horrible, lazy society that kills each other and starts wars while they're able to love and feel. • An excellent job of including some really good previously uncompiled tracks. Perhaps the other Bodysnatchers track from the 7" would have made a better opening track? Pretty much top-notch except for the Z-Cars, Vacant Lot & Wrong Kind Of Stone Age. Today I kick off with rare punk stuff from down under and the Bloodstains comps have become a monster of their own and I think all releases are somewhere in the network available. The reason for this post is again the excellent rip and the complete artwork and finally, of course, the gifted music on it. Everyone's heard the classics by Razar, Victims, Rocks, Leftovers, News and Fun Things....all great bands, but they're on dozens of other compilations so it makes no sense including them here. Instead you'll get a taste of some killer Australian punk (previously uncompiled tracks) you might have missed. Mystery (Bodysnatchers, 1979, from only 7") Dance With The Fuhrer (Skunks, 1982, from only 7") Threats (Young Identities, 1980, from 2.7" [New Trends EP]) Police (Proles, 1979, from only 7") SS Brigade (Public Execution, 1982, from only 7") Alcoholic (Press, 1979, from only 7" and only LP) Fun (Thought Criminals, 1978, from 1.7") Run Amok (Wrong Kind Of Stone Age, 1984, from only 7") Multinationals (Vacant Lot, 1981, from only 7") Second Glance (Sputniks, 1979, from only 7") Guns & Guitars (Just Urbain, 1979, from 1.7") Standing By The Window (Tactics, 1979, from 1.7") Pyramid Party (Quick & The Dead, 1981, from only 7") Is There Someone Out There? (Z-Cars, 1980, from only 7") When I Watch TV (Section Urbane, 1983, from only 7") Who Wants To March? (Rejex, 1980, from only 7") Do The Manic (Chosen Few, 1978, from only 7") Label: Bloodstains
  • Children Of Finland Fighting In Norway aka C.O.F.F.I.N is an Australian punk band who have accepted the mental of their nation’s long legacy of greasy-haired, outback-scrounging, garage rock rumblers, blowing out eardrums and amps one stage at a time, while chiseling their name below those of Radio Birdman and The Hard-Ons in petrol station bathroom stalls across New South Wales and beyond. C.O.F.F.I.N’s were planning on taking their sweaty, slug-trailed tunes and cracked cavalcade on the road this year, hell-bent on mopping up the USA while on tour with Amyl and the Sniffers, but due to COVID, those plans had to take a short dirt nap. The record they were planning to tour on is out though, and it is a bar-none, bar-room crashing, banger! The latest self-titled album from C.O.F.F.I.N’s is their fourth LP overall and retains a lot of the attitude from their previous releases. It unleashes a raging rip of rock fury that blazes like a wildfire, kept alive and deadly by the bellow-like thump and growl of drummer and vocalist Ben Portnoy whirlwind conjuring percussion and libido-pumping leads and grooves of the band’s three guitarists, Abijah Rado, Arthur Flanders, and Aaron Moss. Not unsurprisingly, C.O.F.F.I.N shares a lot in common stylistically with angst-primed, countryfied garage of groups like The Murder Junkies. To that point, they’ll often close out sets with a GG Allin song and the original cover of their 2018 Piss~Up depicted the band peeing into their own mouths (and the alternative cover isn’t much better). But it’s on matters of ethics and principals, rather than style and image, where the C.O.F.F.I.N diverges from many of their influences. What may appears on the outside like a bunch of boys having a gay old-time while playing recklessly loud and loose rock ‘n roll, is in reality a layered experience of conscientiousness and social engagement (in addition to a bunch of guys messing around and making a god damned racket!). Case in point, C.O.F.F.I.N’s track “Dead Land,” which takes up the issues of environmental degradation, the encroachment development on wildlife habitats, and the devastating impacts of global warming, all with the fires that nearly consumed their native country this past year, billowing at the top of mind, with its lusty appetite for destruction in the foreground. If the land dies, it will be humanity’s fault, and presently we as a species show no signs of abating our march towards a fallow Earth. Socials issues are of great concern to the band as well. In interviews, Portnoy and other band members will speak candidly about the need to confront homophobia and end racism in Australia and around the world. C.O.F.F.I.N may take the piss (literally) when it comes to themselves and their music, but when it comes to the subject matter of their songs, they clearly intend to inspire reflection and action, as much, or more, than simply a rowdy, good time. As guitarist Abijah Rado told Monster Children back in July, “Now is a time that, through collective unity, people’s voices are finally being heard and acknowledged. The whole system needs to change and that will never happen overnight, but it’s good to see that the ball has started rolling towards implementing these necessary adjustments.” (Erste Theke Records)
  • Mastodon present their anxiously awaited ninth full-length album, Hushed and Grim, via Reprise Records. Over the past year, the group recorded the album in their home town, collaborating with producer David Bottrill [Tool, Rush, Muse, Peter Gabriel] behind the board. As their most ambitious body of work to date, it consists of 15 tracks, surveying sonic landscapes of rock, psychedelia, punk, metal, alternative, and prog threaded together by the innately expressive musical interplay of these four musicians. At the same time, an atmosphere of loss, loneliness, and longing permeates through the trio of cathartic vocals as they musically say goodbye to old friend, confidant, and long-time manager the late Nick John by architecting a magnum opus that bears the influence of his eternal memory. Tracks D1-D4 are bonus tracks that did not appear on the original album. In 1992, Biohazard signed with Roadrunner Records and released Urban Discipline, which gave the band national and worldwide attention in both the heavy metal and hardcore communities. The video for the song "Punishment" became the most played video in the history of MTV's Headbanger's Ball, and the album sold over one million copies. The band also began opening for larger acts such as Pantera, Suicidal Tendencies, House of Pain, Fishbone, and The Cro-Mags. In 1993, the hardcore rap group Onyx brought on Billy Graziadei for an alternate "Bionyx" version of their hit single "Slam" with Biohazard as their backup band. This led to a collaboration on the title track of the Judgment Night soundtrack. The soundtrack would go on to sell over two million copies in the United States. Months later, the band left Roadrunner Records and signed with Warner Bros. Records Inc. who released their third studio LP, State of the World Address. The album was produced by Ed Stasium in Los Angeles and contained the single "How It Is" featuring Sen Dog of Cypress Hill, for which a video was also shot. During their 1994 tour, the band made an appearance on the second stage at the Monsters of Rock festival held at Castle Donington. State of the World Address went on to sell over one million copies, and Rolling Stone magazine selected the Biohazard logo as the best logo of the year. This was the last Biohazard album with Bobby Hambel, who left due to differences with the rest of the band. The band recorded their fourth studio album, Mata Leao, as a three piece in 1996. It was produced with the help of Dave Jerden. For the 1996-97 Mata Leao Tour, former Helmet guitarist Rob Echeverria joined the band. The band also played on the Ozzfest mainstage alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, Danzig, Fear Factory, and Sepultura. While touring Europe in support of the Mata Leao album, the band recorded their Hamburg, Germany, show for their first live album, No Holds Barred (Live in Europe), which was released in 1997 through their former label, Roadrunner Records. The band signed to Mercury Records and released their fifth studio album, New World Disorder, in 1999, once again with Ed Stasium as a producer Track List Side A 1 Chamber Spins Three 3:40 2 Punishment 4:45 3 Shades Of Grey 3:26 4 Business 4:04 5 Black And White And Red All Over 4:10 Side B 1 Man With A Promise 3:20 2 Disease 4:01 3 Urban Discipline 5:33 4 Loss 5:19 Side C 1 Wrong Side Of the Tracks 3:37 2 Mistaken Identity 4:32 3 We’re Only Gonna Die (From Our Own Arrogance) 2:17 4 Tears Of Blood 4:52 5 Hold My Own 2:51 Side D 1 Business (demo) 4:13 2 Urban Discipline (demo) 5:14 3 Loss (demo) 5:12 4 Black And White And Red All Over (demo) 4:36 Label: Run Out Groove, Roadrunner Records Barcode: 0081227880170
  • Released back in 2000 on cd format only, now reissued for the first time ever on vinyl. Cheltenham’s Horror Punk/Death Rockers The Screaming Dead, whose name is drawn from the English title of the 1972 horror film “Dracula contra Frankenstein” is one of the few bands that managed to authentically straddle the line between punk and gothic / goth rock in the early 80s. Like The Damned, the band’s oeuvre includes purist three chord punk alongside more nuanced gothic rock pieces. And similar to kindred souls in bands like The Dark and Siekiera, Screaming Dead’s early aggressive approach gave way, later in their career, to a more measured and atmospheric gothic sound. Songs like "Valley Of The Dead" or "Warcry", which still sound very originally like punk rock, already have a dark melancholy in them that foreshadows darker things. With "Night Creatures" or "20th Century Vampire" they have succeeded in creating absolute masterpieces, these songs take you into the night and leave you there. Towards the end, saxophone and organ come into play, it gets poppier, but also more dramatic, but remains darkly melancholic. There's a dirty undertone running through every song, which gives the overall work that extra punk touch. Screaming Dead from have created a new, very own sound. (Bomb All Records)
  • Part of the late '70s/early '80s HC/punk explosion out of the Los Angeles area, where bands like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Minutemen, and Bad Religion originated from, Anti formed in 1979 by a then teenage Danny Phillips, better known as Danny Dean, who was the bassist/guitarist and first original vocalist, primary songwriter, and sole continuous member throughout multiple lineup changes during the past 40 years. Their 1982 debut album, 'I Don't Want To Die In Your War', was recorded and mixed by legendary producer and sound engineer for Black Flag and Descendents, Spot. It is a major example of California hardcore from the early '80s. Despite having been completely underrated, Anti's 1982 debut paved the way for a lot of California punk to come. Available again for the first time after almost four decades on its original format, with its original artwork and complete with insert thanks to Radiation Records. Label: Radiation Records
