Originally conceived and executed as a one-man project by Tom Pimlott on the banks of the Mersey River in Liverpool, England, VIOLENT REACTION recorded a demo in 2011, an 7" in 2012 and an LP for Painkiller Records in 2013. Soon after, Tom relocated to Leeds to assemble a full band with an end result that finds the lads playing straight-edge, hardcore with an obvious oi-punk influence. A deranged cacophony straight out of London, England. On their debut, self-titled release, VIOLIN blend elements of Swedish masters TOTALITÄR and HEADCLEANERS with the muscle and swagger of Boston 82 and the panicked power of NYHC in the mid 80s. The end result is a Mind numbingly fast and concise pure hardcore punk that is all together contemporary, edging in at times on the learned idiocy of Toronto’s S.H.I.T. VIOLIN is the brainchild of Lindsay Corstorphine (SAUNA YOUTH, MONOTONY, PRIMITIVE PARTS etc) who has written, mixed and recorded everything on this stellar release, with the exception of the drums, here carried out by the inimitable Jonah Falco of FUCKED UP fame. Pinning Falco’s drumming to Corstorphine's vision has nailed a sound which is at once huge and perfectly audible, whilst remaining brutal and ugly in tone. There are moments of genuine innovation on display as is evident on the track ‘Empty Mind’ which begins with discordant noise, before building from a mid-paced swing into frantic lunacy, and then introducing a harrowing and unexpected synthesiser. The stark black and white artwork, carried out by Daniel David Freeman, provides a perfectly abstract and menacing back drop to this slab of primitive hardcore. ($arny) (La Vida Es Un Mus)
  • Los Angeles has a new Oi band Vis Vires, which features members of The Templars, The Hardknocks, and Bovver Wonderland. There is an obscure branch of oi oi music that doesn't just flirt with - but fully gets their rocks off - on classic metal, and Vis Vires belongs firmly in that camp. (Mob Clash Records)

  • Vivien Goldman's eagerly awaited ‘Next Is Now’ was recorded in New York and produced by Youth (Killing Joke, The Orb, Paul McCartney) and features ten brand new tracks, including lead single ‘Saturday Afternoon’. Says Goldman, "Quite a turn-up to be making my first album now, specially with my dear bred'ren Youth at the controls. I found I had lots to sing about and my voice has improved!" The album will get a full release on limited edition vinyl and CD on the 23rd of October and also includes the haunting recent single ‘I Have A Voice’ which Goldman explained at the time: “I wrote this song in 2019, in London. People were arguing about Brexit and Trump and the existential sense of uncertainty was much more intense than when punks sang “No Future” in the 1970s. We must keep our energy and persistence up to make the change we need. We have a voice.” It prompted Brooklyn Vegan and Pitchfork to hail, "The return of the post-punk diva." Musician, writer, educator and broadcaster, her celebrated post-punk output of the early 1980’s saw Goldman acclaimed for the social comment on tracks such as ‘Private Armies’ - voted a top feminist punk song by Pitchfork. The accolade led to the release of Goldman’s seventh book, the award-winning Revenge of the She-Punks, which is appearing in seven international editions. Her musical renaissance was prompted by the popularity of ‘Resolutionary’, the 2016 compilation of her early 1980s music recorded with people from PiL, The Raincoats, Slits, Aswad, Robert Wyatt and her own first band, The Flying Lizards. Goldman’s post-punk classic, ‘Launderette’ recently featured in HBO’s The Deuce and she has been sampled by the likes of rappers Madlib and The Roots, among others. While organizing the Dischord archive, they came across the 4-track of VOID's 1st recording session. This was done at Hit And Run Studios in 1981 and never officially released. The master tape was nowhere to be found so the tape was remixed by Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara at Inner Ear in 2011. This release features that entire session plus their 1st Inner Ear demo including the "flex your head" cuts and song that ended up on the "condensed flesh" 7", 2 outtakes from their 2nd Inner Ear session and a couple of live recordings. Vinyl includes a digital download card. (Dischord Records) https://voidofficial.bandcamp.com/album/sessions-1981-83

  • War and Pain is the debut studio album from Canadian heavy metal band Voivod, released on August 10, 1984 through Metal Blade Records. Anomaly. Seminal. Iconoclasts. A "band's band". These are the nebulous words that sum up a group of artists now in their third decade of collaboration and creation. These terms are yokes that Voivod must bear. Yet there is a purity in this fate that will live forever. What were the odds in the first place? Four young men in Quebec, addled by art, high on hash, fueled by Venom and Motorhead. Post-heavy metal, pre-MTV. The 80s were upon them and the threat of nuclear war seemed almost inevitable. Why not live out the end-times sipping absinthe, writing music, and donning leather and spikes? 2018 remaster incl. 4 bonus tracks. Label: Metal Blade Records Barcode: 0039841449105
  • Newborn black/death necrobestiality featuring members of MACABRO GENOCIDIO and MORBUS GRAVE! Comes with 11″x11″ lyric sheet. Diehard radioactive ash-grey vinyl ltd. to 100 copies. (F.O.A.D. Records)
  • At last its here,,, the Von Gams LP… the first punkband from Vaxjö, did a fantastic 7” record back in 79, that they recorded in Klippan with Pål Spectrum, yes the two songs are on the LP. And 9 more songs. They did also a gret EP on slyngel records some years ago these songs are not here,,, so all I can say this is a very nice record with lots of cool music and sounds from 1979-1981,,, and many hits,, I LOVE it,,, Our take: Don’t be fooled by the graffiti logo on the cover… this isn’t a Cold World side project, but rather some vintage 70s Swedish punk. Von Gam released a two-song single in 1980 (that’ll set you back $200-300 if you’re lucky enough to find one) and a (presumably) even rarer cassette in 1981, and from what I can tell from the not-very-Anglophone-friendly packaging this LP collects the single, a few of the songs from the cassette, and some other assorted tracks. It’s easy to see why the single goes for so much money, because Von Gam play great 70s European punk with a distinctly rock and roll flavor… fans of the Kids, Lost Kids, and Rude Kids (hell, maybe there are even some similar bands out there that don't have the word “kids” in their name!) will eat this up, as will fans of more modern bands in this vein like Finland’s Achtungs or Sweden’s Baddat for Trubbel. Von Gam dabble in some other sounds too… there’s some ska on this LP’s deeper tracks and more mid-paced, Clash-inspired songs, but the best songs here are absolute scorchers that will blow the wig off of anyone who has more than a few plays on their collection of Killed by Death compilations. A1-A2 from the "Hasse Parasit" 7" recorded 13 october 1979 at Studio Bombadill, Klippan A3, A4 & A6 recorded 28 januari 1980 at Radio Kronoberg, Växjö A5, B5 live 8 april 1983 at Lady Jane, Lessebo B1-B4 from the "Ung & Söt" cassette recorded 14-15 mars 1981 at Studio Allton, Liatorp Comes with a insert with the stories behind the songs. • "The Land of Fire and Ice" has long been known for immense natural beauty, ancient folklore, hakarl, aluminum and hairy little horses. What you may not know is that punks were also there from the very start of the show. One of the most important bands to emerge from the thriving Reykjavík scene was Vonbrigði. Though they draw influence from UK and European post-punk and American hardcore, have no doubts Vonbrigði were 100% their own unique thing. They didn't receive a ton of international attention at the time and sort of faded into history but not without releasing a handful of songs, including a blistering hardcore track on the Rokk Í Reykjavík soundtrack compilation and an incredible EP on the fledgling Gramm label owned by Ásmundur Jónsson and Einar Örn (of Purrkur Pillnikk, Kukl and, more notably, Sugarcubes fame). All of the aforementioned songs are included here along with the rest of the previously (and unbelievably, I mean how is material this amazing not released immediately after recording it? Crazy!) unreleased '82/'83 sessions. 71 minutes of sweat and grit. Who needs volcanoes when you have Vonbrigði's fire? All tracks recorded between July 1982 and January 1983 at Studio Hanagal by Kjartan Kjartansson. Mixed and mastered in 2020 at Klakhöllin by Hallur Ingólfsson. Art by Þórir Georg. Came with a gatefold cover and two printed inner sleeves. A1-B4 recorded at Breiðabólsstaðir, Álftanesi in July/August 1982 C1-C4 recorded at Eskihlið 26/27 August 1982 C5 from Various - Rokk Í Reykjavík C6-D4 recorded at Ægisgata in December 1982 /January 1983 (Iron Lung Records/ Reykjavík Record Shop)
