• Last of the Garage Punk Unknowns is a series compilation albums of 1960s garage rock created and compiled by Tim Warren and released by Crypt Records in 2015 and 2016.The series consists of a total of eight LP's (volumes 1 through 8) and four CD's which each combine each of the corresponding LP's onto one compact disc (volumes 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, and 7&8).Like Crypt Records' Back from the Grave series, the Last of the Garage Punk Unknowns entries include the raw and aggressive numbers characterized by the use of fuzztone-distorted guitars and rough vocals, yet the songs tend to be more melodic and inclusive of the diversity of the genre. As indicated on the front sleeves, most of the songs were recorded by American groups, between 1965-1967. The series tends to follow the packaging format established by the Back from the Grave series in that each volume includes detailed liner notes that include basic information about each song and group, such as origin and recording date. The albums also include photographs of included groups, and cover artwork reflects the mid-1960s style graphic presentation popular on record sleeves of the time. • Third volume of this all-girl foot-stompin' bovver rock compilation series. An extract from the novel “Bovver Birds Rool” (…continued) Dawn’s preferred nickname was “Demolition Girl”. Or, “Demolition Dawn”, if needs must. She would never answer to just plain old “Dawn”, though. “Dawn” was completely out. She was tired of blokes asking if they could see her “crack”, for a start. That was never funny, to Dawn. Or the blokes, after they’d said it and got their comeuppance. And then there was Jane. Her friends called her “Jane Pain”, because she liked to inflict it on her enemies in lethal doses. Her enemies called her “Plain Jane”, which she wasn’t, but she was hardly the Daily Mirror’s wartime glamour girl Jane, either. A one-girl war? Yeah, sometimes. Especially if you were one of the chancers attempting to call her “Plain”. Or, if you were attempting to cause aggro for her beloved Dawn. And these were The Knuckle Girls. Well, two of them, anyway. The others were many but lesser-spotted, like their Bovver Bird adversaries, unless there was a crisis, which was most weeks. Most days, sometimes. Friday nights were the worst. (To be continued…) Tracklist SIDE A 01) Diana Demon - Jet Set Lover 02) Norah - Let's Do It Again 03) Debbie Byrne - Burning 04) Maureen Elkner - Dynamite 05) Kiki Dee – Super Cool 06) Mamba Strike - Cat o' Nine Tails 07) unknown artist - Cruisin' For a Bruisin' SIDE B 01) Bobbie McGee - Flashback 02) Jackie & Jan - Bay City Roller Boy 03) Faith Brown - Right Between The Eyes 04) Vic Lezal's Professionals - Big Brother 05) The Blackboard Rubber Band - When I Kissed The Teacher 06) Alexandra Rubin - Ich Glaub', Ich Liebe Dich 07) Jessy Joyce - Welcome To My Dream (Angry Young Women Records)
  • LINER NOTES: An extract from the novel “Bovver Birds Rool” (…continued) “That must hurt”, said Dave. He hovered over Sue as she shakily tried to return to her feet. “Well help me, then”, barked Sue with a pained expression, “don’t just flippin’ stand there”. “I think this fell off”, said Dave as he handed Sue back her bloodied Marc Bolan rosette. “Great”, snapped Sue, “Steve’s only just given me that… Which way did they go?” “Don’t be daft”, said Dave, “you’re in no fit state.” At Tuesday night’s Stall Street Disco, Dawn and Jane were busy victory dancing to their anthem, Hector’s “Wired Up”, darting hard-faced Knuckle Girl glares at any boy daring enough to comment on their togetherness with an ill-advised wink and a nudge to his immediate neighbour. Meanwhile, Sue had invested her last 2p in a phone call to her best mate “Sand”, short for Sandra. “Sand” was the self-elected leader of the Bovver Birds, the female contingent of The Larkhall Legion, who were beginning to assemble around the entrance to the disco. “Tired of living?” were the last words Dawn heard as her face hit the floor.“You cow!,” Dawn screamed, as she pulled out the remnants of her own front tooth and threw it in the face her towering tormentor. “The Knuckle Girls buckle and the Bovver Birds win. Again!,” announced Sand in a loud but deadpan voice over the continuing Hector music. “We’ll leave you alone now to bury your dead. … “Birds” is still the word, and you’ve should been shat on from a great height. Next time, bitches!” A bow-tied bouncer strong-armed “Sand” from the hall, dragging her by the arms as she still tried to pitch a globule of carefully-harvested spittle over her agitator. “And there’s a greeny for you,” she shrieked with delight as it landed successfully. • LINER NOTES: An extract from the novel “Bovver Birds Rool”: Dawn pushed Sue’s head as hard as she could against the stone wall of the school. The connection registered with a gruesome “thud”. “That’s for getting off with Steve”, she snarled. A second girl cracked Sue sharply around the face with an open palm and then kicked her as she slumped to the ground.. “Do not mess…” shrieked Jane. “Do you understand, Bitch!” A descending bike chain left a bloody trail across Sue’s now fractured skull. “Have you learned your lesson, Bitch, or do you want some knuckle too? Well… do you?” Dawn smiled approvingly at Jane and the two girls linked arms and walked away. “What are you staring at?” , snapped Dawn at their first passer-by, Dave, a pale and sullen lad from school. “I’m not quite sure,” he quickly replied. “It walks like a bloke and talks like a bloke, but it’s got girly bits… Or, at least, I think it has.” Jane quickly broke away from Dawn and started to run towards Dave who immediately quickened his pace. “And you’ll never find out you piece of chicken shit,” she screamed. (to be continued…) Bovver Birds & Knuckle Girls... a rare burst of etiquette. So what would you get on a date with a Bovver Bird or a Knuckle Girl? A few harsh words and a cheap thrill- or a competitively-priced thrill, at least. Up against the wall. Nothing fancy, just a bit of “hanky panky” with your tougher-than-average Knuckle Sandwich Nancy. “Girls used only to resort to psychological bullying… Now they’re moving in gangs and using bicycle chains, knives and clubs. In fact they’re beginning to behave in a way once only associated with the roughest of boys.” Henry Clover, Press Officer Of The National Union Of Teachers. • A decade of Non-Aligned beats, soul, disco and jazz 1969-1979. - First ever beats, breaks and rare grooves compilation from ex Yugoslavia - Eastern European diggers delight - Remastered straight from the vaults of Jugoton - Raw funk, psych, prog rock, orchestral disco, big band jazz funk and more... Yugoslavia - six republics, four decades, one dictator and a single record label that ruled them all: Jugoton (Zagreb, Croatia). Jugoton was by far the country's largest label with the strongest and most diverse output that stretched from Balkan roots to contemporary trends and the sound of tomorrow . The early days of Yugoslavia featured strong censorship but by the end of the 60's the Communist party views softened up by a large degree. Westernized music already had a solid presence and first James Brown influenced compositions were released. Yugo funk, a term coined by DJ’s and crate diggers from the Balkans, encompasses a wide variety of performers and genres: from the 60's merseybeat rock bands, prog rock groovers and big band jazz orchestras to the late 70's sophisticated 4x4 funk and essentially everything in between. Jugoton Funk Vol.1, a first of its kind, celebrates the pioneer years of funk infused music released by Jugoton. While in pursuit of these treasures all over the Balkan region and beyond, the compilation’s selectors, Dr. Smeđi Šećer & Višeslav Laboš, both active as DJ's and crate diggers from the sole beginnings of the ex-Yu craze, wanted to capture the authentic and idiosyncratic funk sound of Jugoton and Yugoslavia. So here it is, comb your moustache, light up a fat one, turn up the amplifier and headbang away to these amazing tunes remastered from original master tapes dug out of the Jugoton vaults (now Croatia Records). Compiled by Dr. Smeđi Šećer & Višeslav Laboš. Label: Everland Barcode: 3850126086931

The compilation album Heures sans Soleil was originally released in October 1985 in an edition of 1000 copies. It was the fourth vinyl release on LTM, the label I founded while still at school in Edinburgh, and followed on from singles by Minny Pops and A Primary Industry, as well a live album by Crispy Ambulance. . . . I can't claim the idea of an artsy cosmopolitan compilation album was terribly original. I was 19 years old at the time, and still deep in the thrall of earlier Crépuscule collections such as From Brussels With Love and The Fruit of the Original Sin." Includes extended liner notes by James Nice. Released in collaboration with LTM/James Nice. 180-gram vinyl. Includes tracks by Section 25, Anti-Group, Minny Pops, Tuxedomoon, Mazowsze, Eric Random, Dislocation Dance, The Happy Family, Section 25 , Crispy Ambulance, and A Primary Industry. "Founded by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the now legendary Red Bird was, for a time, the hottest independent record label in 1960s America. Working out of New York’s renowned Brill Building, George “Shadow” Morton along with the husband and wife team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, produced some of the most influential girl group sounds of the time. So this, my friends, is a real treat for fans of Red Bird and the associated Blue Cat, Tiger and Daisy labels. The aforementioned Shangri-Las kick-off this 17 track affair. Man, I cannot stress enough my love for The Shangri-Las on these punk rock pages. It’s got to the stage where I’m convinced I should’ve been a heartbroken teenage girl from New York in 1960-something. God, I’m such a sucker for the so-called melodramatic “death disc.” Leader of the Pack was made for vinyl and it sounds as resplendent as ever, here. The Dixie Cups track of choice is Iko Iko; favoured ahead of Chapel of Love. There are so many amazing cuts on display across both sides of the wax, but the side A closer of Go Now by Bessie Banks takes some beating. Step aside, The Moody Blues. If you love Sixties girl groups or you’re looking to discover the hippest sounds around at that time, then Go Girls is a welcome addition to any collection." • * A unique compilation of Electronic, Minimal, Synth, Wave and Avantgarde music from ex-Yugoslavia * Two double LPs with over 150 minutes and 47 songs from 1964-1989 - This here is PART 1 now, the second part will be released in 2023 * Earlier released on CD in 2014 by Croatia Records, ex Jugoton * Restored from the original master tapes by the veteran archive diggers Višeslav Laboš and Zeljko Luketić The galloping technical progress in the second half of the last century dominated all spheres of daily life, art and culture. In the music industry machines took over the role of classical instruments and did not stop at RnR, punk nor industrial music. No one could resist the challenge, but also the prevailing trends in the 80s. The music industry was influenced by the electronic virus globally, not sparing even the remotest corners of the planet, producing bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, Soft Cell or lesser known ones like Liquid Liquid, Section 25, The Wake as well as the pioneers of the electronic music Silver Apples, Pierre Henry, etc . What was going on in the music industry of former Yugoslavia and at Jugoton, the biggest YU music label at that time? The all over answer is given by a new release of Everland Music: Electronic Jugoton - Synthetic music from Yugoslavia 1964. - 1989. Vol. 1 Electronic Jugoton is the first part of two double albums, where the second part will even go back to pre-electronic music from 1964. Both double albums were initially released by Croatia Records (ex-Jugoton) in 2014 on a 2CD set with no less than two and a half hours of material (47 songs, 35 performers), showing the contemporary trend of Jugoton at that time towards avant-garde and provocative directions in electronic music. This untimely compilation is released for the first time on vinyl now on two double LPs, housed in gatefold sleeves by Everland Music, where part 2 will be released in 2023. The brave and insightful creators of the compilation Electronic Jugoton, veteran crate diggers Višeslav Laboš and Zeljko Luketić, have excelled at reconstructing the musical past of electronic music in Yugoslavia from 1964 – 1989. Jugoton's extensive research included the most exciting and progressive moments of pop and disco music, early rap, electronic responses of new wave, RnR, post punk and industrial bands to the current trend of the 80s, but also pioneers of avant-garde electronic music. Electronic Jugoton part 1 is officially opened by the band Laboratorija with the song Devica 69, which opens a window to a completely new and experimental world in former Yugoslavia.Laboš and Luketić have boldly chosen the material without reservations, suggesting that for the first time in one place we have a section of forgotten, unique underground bands like Beograd, Data, Brazil, The Master Scratch band, DU DU A and beyond. Besides the excellent underground bands, we find popular performers of the time performing less well-known songs: Denis & Denis, Oliver Mandić, Slađana & Neutral Design. Electronic Jugoton part 2 is partly dedicated to unique electronic music in the performance of important Yugoslav punk, new wave, RnR and industrial bands: Zana, Pekinška patka, Električni orgazam and Borghesia, while the second part of the material is focused on avant-garde early electronic music in Yugoslavia, where the works of composers Igor Savin, Branimir Sakac, Igor Kuljerić and Miroslav Miletić were presented. Luketić and Laboš rescued the obscure electronic tune Elektra by Zdenka Kovačiček, who was at that time Jugoslovska Soul and funk diva. The uniqueness and quality of this compilation are also audio stories for children, which were extremely fertile ground for an experimentation with electronic sounds, as they should be highly imaginative to attract the attention of the childrens. Electronic Jugoton is also the first compilation in which the listener will find fragments of interviews with actors from the time gave for Jugoton Express. This was a series of promo vinyls printed in extremely small quantities in the 80's and intended to be exclusively for radio stations. An average of 30 minutes of promotion material and interviews with musicians were available for the first time through this compilation. The value of this compilation is time and priceless. The only question is whether you will be fast enough to catch your copy of the limited double vinyl editions! A1. Laboratorija - Jugoton Express A2. Laboratorija-Devica 69 A3. D'Boys - Žaba A4. A double album exploring the explosion of wealth of music springing from the squats and bedsits and artschools of Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and West Berlin in the aftermath of punk from the likes of Der Plan, Holger Hiller, Palais Schaumberg, Conrad Schnitzler and a host more. Do not adjust your sets. Take a step back from the tracking. This is the sound of Germany’s musical youth let loose on cheap synths and pawnshop guitars. A record of a disparate s cene of squat pop-stars, artschool upstarts and committed non-musicians who redefined German music in the first half of the 1980s. By the dawn of the new decade, punk had burnt out in a frenzy of feedback, reshaping the musical landscape before burrowing back into the underground for a period of reinvention. But the scorched earth it left behind proved to be fertile soil, nurturing a new movement grass-rooting through Germany’s major cities. For the first time the country had its own youth culture, spilling out of the squats of Hamburg and West Berlin, occupying the art scene in Düsseldorf and Köln and congregating around independent record shops stocked with angsty import 7”s. Empowered by punk’s DIY spirit, these kids valued conviction over competence, opting to ignore the industry and make music for themselves, sung in their own language. Even the cats we now call krautrock, revolutionary though they were, mostly sang in English, adopting the lingua franca of rock & roll as a shorthand for authenticity for a native crowd who wouldn’t have it any other way. This new scene rejected the expected, celebrating freedom of expression above all else. Armed with unconventional instruments, newly affordable electronics and rudimentary recording gear, they worked from the ground up, building basic rhythms and simple melodies into mutant grooves and following their imagination wherever it took them. The result was a genre-fluid wave of fusion pop pulled from funk, punk, jazz and reggae; united in attitude rather than aesthetic. Lyrically, the groups explored the serious and silly, embracing the irreverence of dadaism to deliberately displease the earnest alternativen of the older generation. (Bureau B Records)

Rastafarianism came to prominence in the late 1960’s/ 1970’s and had a huge influence on the musical culture in Jamaica. The sentiments of the songs reflected the struggles of life, as reggae music always did but now with an added spiritual/conscious element to the lyrics. By the mid 1970’s most, if not all the top flight singers were following the doctrine and growing their har to dreadlocks. (Kigston Sounds Records)

  • A cult classic of sci-fi dystopia, 'Decoder' saw Neubauten's members working alongside Genesis P-Orridge and William S. Burroughs. It's one of the strangest (and most prescient) films of the decade. The film was made in Hamburg and Berlin, and directed by Muscha (who directed several punk films). The lead roles are played by Christiane F and FM Einheit from Einstürzende Neubauten, who also contributed to the film's score. Genesis P-Orridge (from Psychic TV), the kingpin of the English industrial scene, also appears as a priest of the Black Noise faith. Author William S. Burroughs portrays an insurrectionist salesman of audio equipment, and American cult actor Bill Rice plays a detective. Matt Johnson from The The wrote a frenetic, deformed song for the film that is both fantastic and painful to listen to: 'Three Orange Kisses From Kazan.' But Dave Ball and Genesis P-Orridge composed the rest of the soundtrack. (Dave Ball was the other half of Marc Almond's Soft Cell, at the time one of the biggest groups in the English underground electro-pop scene.) 'Decoder' is split into three parts, each one filmed through a heavily saturated primary colour filter of red, green or blue. (The first decoding is of the power of colours.) It's a futuristic film, a joyous application of William S. Burroughs' 'The Electronic Revolution,' which proposes a seditious and rather poetic method of subverting the masses and inciting them to rise up against the forces of order. The general idea is that insurrectionists should place loudspeakers in the streets to simulate riot sounds and conjure up imaginary disturbances, fostering a permanent sense of insecurity and terrorizing the enemy. It's all intended to create an atmosphere that would cause actual riots. Appropriately, Burroughs himself was given the role of the audio equipment salesman who is secretly fomenting revolution from inside his dusty little shop. The "hero" is played by FM Einheit, who one day realizes that the food served in the city's fast food joints and the muzak being piped into them are two sides of the same coin - a massive program intended to control the masses. A priest from the secretive and sect-like Black Noise order then instructs him on the rudiments of manipulation. Together they attack capitalism by using anti-muzak and sonic terrorism. They cause riots and general hysteria by distributing their cassettes to the people. Once the ground has been made fertile for revolution, the masses are then subverted using "the black noise." The film may have denounced muzak - seen as a symbol of consumerism's stranglehold on the world - but its soundtrack actively flirts with it. Dave Ball and Genesis P-Orridge shrewdly hijack elevator music for their own ends: alongside loops taken from actual muzak records are synths that pump out slow, almost funky grooves, a few jazzy spirals of piano notes intertwined with bleeps, samples, grinding sounds, reverb and whispers that could be either sensual or menacing. 'Decoder' rejoices in its dialectic between "muzak" and "black noise" in various ways, looking to take as many liberties and make as many exaggerations as it can get away with. SIDE 1: 1. Dave Ball & Genesis P-Orridge - Muzak For Frogs 2. Matt Johnson & The The - Three Orange Kisses From Kazan 3. Dave Ball & Genesis P-Orridge - Dream 4. Dave Ball & Genesis P-Orridge - Main Theme »Showdown« 5. Dave Ball & Genesis P-Orridge - Sex & The Married Frog SIDE 2: 1. FM Einheit & Jon Caffery - Riots 2. Genesis P-Orridge - Information 3. Jon Caffery, FM Einheit & Alexander Von Borsig - Muzak Decoding - Dreamachine - Pirates 4. Einstürzende Neubauten - Compressed Metal 5. Dave Ball & Genesis P-Orridge - Main Theme »Finale« Label: Replica Nova – RPCN008 Barcode: 3760344440616

Soul Jazz Records new ‘Cold Wave’ is a new collection of current electronic artists who have all been shaped by the early European cold wave artists of the late 70s and early 80s. This is the second release of Soul Jazz Records’ new Cold Wave overview. This second edition Cold Wave #2 comes in two vinyl editions – a one-off pressing purple coloured vinyl edition and a black vinyl edition. Both come as heavyweight double vinyl housed in bespoke individual inner sleeves and the limited edition first pressing of this album comes with its own free pull-out fanzine on the groups featured. The CD edition comes with artist booklet/fanzine and slipcase. All editions are printed in special dayglo colour finish. These first artists created new electronic musical landscapes as well as pursuing a stubborn D-I-Y aesthetic, often releasing material on cassette and pioneering use of lo-fi technology, primitive drum machines and home-recording techniques. As part of this continued evolution today many of the artists featured here also self-release their own material, run labels, publish fanzines, or are part of wider musical collectives. Aside from the first electronic, no wave, and post-punk artists cited as influences –Suicide, Patrick Cowley, The Normal, Martin Hannett, Laurie Anderson, Public Image – this new generation of artists also show an exquisitely open source of electronic and disparate influences, everything from Underground Resistance to Purcell, from Scientist to New Beat and more besides. Most of the featured artists are based in Europe and include Krikor from France, Beta Evers and L.F.T. from Germany, Lena Willikens, Job Siffre and De Ambassade from the Netherlands, Toulouse Low Trax from Germany, Dave I.D. and Broken English Club from the UK, and V.C.V.S from Georgia All of the bands featured here make distinctive contemporary music out of the 80s roots of the first cold wave movement.
