  • 40th Anniversary Edition, 180g vinyl, Gatefold 2LP. First released in 1972 on Elektra Records, the compilation is among the only ‘various artists' titles to consistently wind up on published lists of ‘all-time top albums'. Nuggets spawned more than 200 like-minded collections under such titles as Pebbles and Back From The Grave, and is a consistent compilation favourite and has carved out a genre of its own.
While it's not the extended, long-form work of a single artist whose muse simply cannot be contained by a mere two sides of vinyl (the ostensible purpose of this column), the first NUGGETS compilation deserves applause and appreciation for what it did, because what it did was pretty special. Compiled by Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group guitarist and rock writer extraordinaire) and released in 1972, NUGGETS turned on listeners to the work of artists whose muses fit perfectly into that most rock 'n' roll of formats—the three (or so)-minute single. Though most of the collection's 27 tracks fall under the rough rubric of garage rock, there are many influences in play here, and many hits (both actual and would-be) that would have influence on artists for generations to come. There aren't many true pop hits on NUGGETS. Count Five's immortal "Psychotic Reaction" is the biggest of them all, having topped out at Number Five in 1966. The Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)" and The Standells' "Dirty Water" both grazed the Top Ten, and there were a few other Top 40 tracks in the mix, but the real gems are the ones you'd probably never heard before hearing them on NUGGETS. Take The Nazz's "Open My Eyes." That's Todd Rundgren singing on that very Who-ish track "Open My Eyes," but even though it hit Number 112 on the national singles chart in 1968, you probably had never heard it unless you were listening to WMMR-FM in Philly, which played it a lot. Likewise, you might have been familiar with Van Morrison and Them's 1965 rendition of the blues "Baby, Please Don't Go," but folks outside Detroit likely had not been introduced to The Amboy Dukes' 1967 take on it (nor had they been introduced to the Duke's wild-man guitarist, Ted Nugent). If you'd stumbled across "A Public Execution" in 1965, you might've thought it was something off the last Bob Dylan record, but it was just Mouse (or Mouse and the Traps, as they're usually referred to) doing a great version of electric Dylan, mostly for audiences in Tyler, Texas. There are so many other great tracks—by the likes of The Seeds, The Shadows of Knight, the Knickerbockers and more—it's best to grab a copy (on Rhino vinyl, preferably) experience it for yourself, and thank Lenny Kaye, if you ever run into him. His archival instincts and flat-out love of rock 'n' roll helped NUGGETS influence a generation or three of rock bands over the last four-plus decades. These songs are still a wonder to hear. Drop the needle and turn them up. (Rhino Records)

  • Formed in Liverpool in 1978, this collection of 21 tracks are from the very beginning of the bands existence. According to guitarist Will Sergeant, these recordings could quite simply be some of the most significant in the bands career - “Without John Peel sessions, Echo And The Bunnymen in my opinion, would not exist! It’s that simple. The band got so much support from him and John Walters (Peel’s producer). Recording a Peel session was essential to the development of our songwriting skills while at the same time giving us amazing exposure and self-belief.” During this period (1979-1983) for the band, they became one of the most important bands of the post-punk scene. • 40th anniversary edition on limited Blue vinyl. The Ramones' fourth studio album from 1978, Road to Ruin. Originally released on Sept. 22, 1978, Road to Ruin—at the time—was a chronicle of the Queens quartet's most dynamic sonic shift to date. With Bell rechristened as Marky Ramone and Tommy splitting his production duties with Ed Stasium and managing the group, the fourth Ramones LP boasted a much looser grip on the relentless machine gun punk that defined the New York City punk rock sound in the mid-70s, featuring complex chord changes and a closer reach towards the '60s pop feel which was always at the core lead singer Joey Ramone's rebel heart. Featuring the iconic cover art of Punk Magazine founding editor John Holmstrom based on a fan-made drawing, not only does Road contain one of the Ramones' most enduring street hits "I Wanna Be Sedated," the original 12-track mix also featured maneuvers that were aimed directly at attaining the group more radio airplay, including a pair of ballads in the heartbreaking lament "Questioningly" and a sincere rendition of the 1963 Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono composition "Needles and Pins." The fire of the Gabba-Gabba-Heyday was present in the kinesis of blistering tracks like "I Wanted Everything," "I Just Wanna Have Something to Do" and "Bad Brain" (where the legendary DC hardcore band got its name, btw). But it's the lean towards the Ramones' affinity for Phil Spector's Wall of Sound that makes Road such a vital title in the group's canon. (Ron Hart)

  • Paint It Black: 1985 Debut Is Penultimate Goth-Rock Album The template for all goth-rock records that followed, Sisters of Mercy's First and Last and Always stands as one of the – if not the most – influential albums of its kind ever released. Distinguished by Andrew Eldritch's ghostly singing, which gives the impression of hearing a forlorn ghoul croon from a foggy English graveyard, the 1985 set is drenched in gloom, claustrophobia, black humor, and dance-ready beats that provide exhilarating contrasts. Fans of the Cure, Depeche Mode, Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, mid-period Nick Cave, and Joy Division will find it to be a new favorite record. Mastered on our world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI (the best record plant in North America), Silver Label numbered edition LP presents First and Last and Always with a fuller, richer sound that positively obliterates the thin, feeble sonic perspectives that have limited the music until now. Every aspect from Eldritch's haunting singing to the group's jangling guitars and prancing bass lines finally gain genuine definition. Yet what's most improved is the sense of atmosphere: Sisters of Mercy revel in painting tone poems, where the feel and effect are as essential as the notes that are played. This is now an atmospheric tour de force. Ever since it's release, First and Last and Always has been aptly shrouded in mythology. Eldritch pushed the envelope during the recording sessions, literally walking into walls and repeatedly unable to maintain his focus. Strung out on amphetamines, dazed by days of no sleep, upset by a recent breakup, and eating little, the vocalist channeled his discord into somber lyrics and brooding singing. He's framed by pulsing albeit lean, spare rhythms, patient tempos, and the clatter of a programmed drum machine that, in spite of its mechanical operation, sounds strangely organic. The songs evoke wet dungeons, walls-closing-in paranoia, and late-night strolls amidst the U.K.'s mysterious underground. Despite its overall dark character, the record's arrangements value spaciousness, putting a premium on room and minimalism that makes each note count. As a result, twinkling pianos and keyboards parallel steel-cutting guitars and low-tuned bass lines that, in combination with Eldrtich's baritone, suggest glimmers of hope among the decay. Songs such as the shaking "Possession," dramatic "Some Kind of Stranger," and desperate "Marian" remain models of the gothic and post-punk disciplines more than 25 years after their debut. It's no surprise that, given all of the tension and personality that infuse the album, Sisters of Mercy disbanded just months after its release. It's unlikely that any goth-rock album has ever sounded this good. This Silver Label LP will turn your room into rainy, dreary England, circa 1985, and expose you to one of the most harrowing vocal performances on record. "The lead track, 'Black Planet,' showcases the new remastering to full effect. The song features an all-encompassing bass rhythm that, with every strike, infects the tune like mustard gas unleashed in a trench. On a poor master, the bass would threaten to suffocate the rest of the arrangement. But Mobile Fidelity keeps it in check with a distinct, sparkling, upper-mid sensitive guitar; the bass merrily sits on the edge of the soundstage." – Paul Rigby, TONE Audio Gatefold sleeve. • Ever think “Yeah, I love Wolfbrigade but wish they had some blasting occasionally”? Then HELLKNIFE‘s debut ‘Dusk Of Doom’ is the release you have been waiting for! The Mannheim five piece produce that crust metal sound with the aplomb of scene veterans. Guitars ripping between jangling d-beat riffing, trem picked almost black metal-ish speed sections and the melodic leads that give Crust that truly epic punk feel. Vocals are the bellowed hoarse throat tearers classic to the style, lent an edge by an extremely clean production and a delivery any wearer of a dred mullet would be proud of. The drums are intense, again with very polished production nothing is lost from the performance here, pummeling D-beats with some excellent cymbal play swapping to micro-blasting sections through rolling tom fills. HELLKNIFE capture that epic stadium crust feel perfectly, while incorporating some unique elements, songs like ‘Burn It Down’ feature a strong bluesy crust’n’roll undertone which keeps the listeners attention. Where some might tire of a surging tide of D-beat for 30 minutes HELLKNIFE do exactly what is needed to please both purists of the genre and keep the more casual fan entertained throughout. • Recorded in 1999 and originally released in Sweden on Distortion, this is the first Skitsystem LP. (although they had released a 10" previously) Skitsystem took the world of hardcore and metal by storm in the late 90's by honing the swedish d-beat crust-core sound. They unleashed a punishingly brutal mix of 80's Swedish hardcore like Anti Cimex, Crudity, Crude SS and Avskum with the dark sounds of Swedish Death Metal like Entombed and At the Gates. The music and lyrics combine to form a bleak, rage fuled view of the "gray world, black thoughts." Skitsystem has the drive and power of D-beat raw punk charging forward with just enough of the melody of Swedish metal in their two guitar assault to keep things from running into a wall of noise. Finally this whole material is remastered and released for the first time. (Fight Records)
  • Their first tape last year was unbelievably gnarly, and on "Inhabit The Corpse", these ghouls have truly broken loose from the restraints of mortal frailty and are unleashing a thrashing, chorus drenched wickedness unheard by the likes of any puny human. Thine ears cannot possibly be prepared for their unholy onslaught, yet it is here and there is nothing you or anyone else on earth can do to stop it. Is there really a good reason to not surrender your soul over to absolute turpitude made manifest through what can best be described as the amalgam of Japanese black metal/punk rippers SEX MESSIAH and the (secretly Finnish) hardcore punk steamroller of a project SYUDAN JISATSU, or in other words: absolute shredding annihilation from beyond the veil? Many bands may try to unleash the darkness and have their invocations met with silence - or maybe a whisper if they’re lucky - as they fizzle out; but when DEVIL MASTER calls, death comes fucking ripping (and we should expect nothing less from villains who also have given us horrific creations as members of CAPE OV BATS, BLANK SPELL, INTEGRITY, and THE DRIP to name a few). In just four tracks, Devil Master shatters your nerves, breaks your will, and drags your limp and drained vessel back into the world, leaving you all alone with nothing but reflection of what has come to pass as you sputter and sob, waiting for the end. This is an experience which is not to be missed. (Erste Theke Tontraeger) https://erstetheketontraeger.bandcamp.com/album/ett-055-devil-master-s-t-ep

  • The Band you've been looking for for a long time, with sounds of dissimilar genres that don't usually cross combined, is out when you least expect it to be. This fully fledged outfit of sheer old-school twisted intensity is a must-listen, no sweat! Devil Master with their four tracks of devilish hardcore punk in the vein of GAI or LSD packed in a deathrock vibe. The Japanese hardcore influence is prevalent but there is so much more! That is punk, metal and goth inspired hardcore punk with demonic vocals and hard as nail beats which is extremely hard to shake once you hear it. The torturous maelstrom sounds of bone breaks and thuggish isolationism. Howling feedback underscores the massive swirling riffs and relentless battery of drums. Foul, tumultuous vocals made entirely of the final exhalations of humanity really send this opus to the apex. A perfect band. The four distorted tracks on this EP mix perfectly the low end reverb soaked deathrock influences with the best of the International Hardcore Punk of the early 80's. Making it a masterpiece of timeless punk. This EP is a perfectly wild and superbly crafted sheet of brutal noise with a pounding goth backbone all jacked up on blackened metal freakout space jams. And you know that Satan smiled when he heard this! (Erste Theke Tontraeger) https://erstetheketontraeger.bandcamp.com/album/ett-055-devil-master-s-t-ep
