Spiral Shadow is the fifth full-length album by American sludge metal band Kylesa. A metal band to the bone, Kylesa stomp the clichés right out of psych-rock on Spiral Shadow. The Georgia band's new album, their fifth in less than a decade, is the next step in a pretty seamless evolution that's hidden increasingly complex (and catchy!) music behind an attack that still hits with the in-the-red rawness of hardcore. - Pitchfork The Savannah, Georgia-based Kylesa are, fundamentally, a metal group, but they are otherwise difficult to categorize: elements of hardcore punk, psychedelic stoner rock, technical speed metal, and good old-fashioned Black Sabbath sludge appear in their music. Also, with a front line consisting of three very different singers instead of a single focal point, Kylesa have a musical variety lacking from many of their more monochromatic peers. Kylesa formed in Savannah in 2001, taking their unusual name from "kilesa mara," what Buddhist teachings term demons of defilement and delusion. Guitarist and singer Phillip Cope and bassist Brian Duke were former members of the Savannah grindcore act Damad, which had released two albums in the '90s; the original lineup was completed with the addition of guitarist and singer Laura Pleasants and drummer Brandon Baltzley. After the release of a single and a split EP with Memento Mori, sessions for Kylesa's debut album were tragically cut short when Duke died during an epileptic seizure. Replacing Duke with bassist and singer Corey Barhorst, the band completed its self-titled debut, released in late 2002. More singles and a placeholder EP, 2004's No Ending 110 Degree Heat Index, followed before Kylesa signed with the indie metal label Prosthetic Records and released their second proper album, To Walk a Middle Course, in 2005. Following the release of that album, Baltzley left the group, replaced by a pair of drummers, Jeff Porter and Carl McGinley. Kylesa's third album, Time Will Fuse Its Worth, was released on Halloween 2006, followed by Static Tensions in 2009. The following year, Kylesa dove even deeper into the psychedelic waters they'd been exploring with Spiral Shadow, which arrived on Season of Mist. The trend continued on their more melodic and expansive sixth album, 2013's Ultraviolet. But Cope and Pleasants never stopped writing. They stockpiled riffs, melodies, and production ideas before embarking on a grueling bout of touring that would last into 2014. When the pair reentered the studio, it was with new drummer Carl McGinley. They delved into their stash for source material. In July of 2015, they announced the imminent release of the album The Exhausting Fire with first single "Lost and Confused." Recorded at the Jam Room in Columbia, South Carolina and produced by Cope, the set compiled and compounded virtually every sound that Kylesa had explored on earlier records as well as some new ones. The Exhausting Fire was issued on October 2. - Stewart Mason, Rovi (Heavy Psych Sounds Records)

Scrabbling at the Lock is the first of two albums by Dutch punk band The Ex in collaboration with avant-garde cellist Tom Cora. It is also the first of The Ex's studio albums to feature the work of then Dog Faced Hermans guitarist Andy Moor, who has remained in the band ever since. With the release of their album Joggers and Smoggers, The Ex were developing further collaborations with musicians from around the world, including New York-based cellist Tom Cora. In the midst of launching their six-part record subscription series and organizing tours on North American, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, The Ex and Cora spent a week in Dolf Planteijdt's studio at the end of January 1991. The 12 songs were mixed in February and slated for a release during a break from tour that summer. The album features heavy interplay of two guitars, bass, cello and more prominent female vocals. Dean McFarlane of Allmusic wrote that by this time the band "were starting to experiment in new tangents that incorporated the influence of folk and free improvisation." He found the album to "explore the delicate modalities of European folk." The Wire described the collaboration as "unusual even by their far-reaching standards." The track "Batium" is an adaption of a piece by late Turkish musician Ismet Siral while the track "Hidegen Fújnak a Szelek" ("Cold Winds Are Blowing") is a cover of a song originally written by Hungarian folk music band Muzsikas. Another version of the album's second song, the Hungarian folk anthem "Hidegen Fújnak a Szelek", sung by The Ex's drummer, Katerina Boerfield, had been previously released as a single without Tom Cora, included on the A-side the third 7" in The Ex's 6 album. The album's lead track, "State of Shock," would later be recorded for the Dutch language album Een Rondje Holland featuring The Ex backed by a 20-piece orchestra. Release The photo of the 1895 Montparnasse derailment depicted on the cover of Scrabbling at the Lock Scrabbling at the Lock was released in August 1991 midway between the first and second half of The Ex's 6 singles series. The album's title was adopted from a text by songwriter Peter Hammill whose song "A Motor-Bike In Afrika" The Ex had covered on their album Aural Guerrilla. Scrabbling at the Lock's cover photo depicted the Montparnasse derailment, a dramatic trainwreck that occurred in France in October 1895, and the record was the first of The Ex's album's to include only one insert: a single, large, black-and-white poster. The band arranged a concert that coincided with Cora being in Europe, held at Amsterdam's Paradiso club, to celebrate both the album's release and the band's 500th live performance (though it was actually their 499th). 2022 New York’s Straw Man Army return with ‘SOS’, the follow-up to their 2020 debut LP, ‘Age of Exile’. Emerging from the D4MT Labs group that also includes Kaleidoscope and Tower 7, Straw Man Army’s delicate musical touch, embrace of melody, and rapid-fire, clearly articulated vocals separate them from the louder and noisier end of New York’s fertile punk scene. While ‘Age of Exile’ examined the legacy of colonialism through the musical milieu of melodic anarcho-punk, ‘SOS’ turns its attention to the increasingly bleak prospects for the human race and planet earth. While Straw Man Army’s lyrical approach remains dense and thought provoking on ‘SOS’, their musical scope grows wider, encompassing ‘Age of Exile’s’ melodic take on anarcho, bleak and brooding post-punk, psychedelic instrumental excursions, and even the wistful pop of album highlight ‘Beware’. ‘SOS’ is everything Straw Man Army’s fans could have hoped for in a follow-up and so much more, cementing the band’s status as one of the most original, exciting, and important groups in the contemporary punk underground (Daniel Lupton) (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)

    AC/DC | high voltage | LP

    22.00 incl. tax
'High voltage' was the first chance america had to glimpse the raw power of Australia's best hard rock outfit. From their earliest days, lead guitarist angus young, a spastic dwarf-like riff-monger who wore nothing but traditional schoolboy attire, led this band of hooligans with gleeful perversity and balls-out ambition. The group's intent is perfectly clear from the disc's opening power chords: to distill rock and mutate the blues down to its barest essentials in a pulverizing whomp. Riding over the top of the battering rhythm section is the all-too-true sneer of vocalist bon scott, who brings sexist anthems to a previously unachieved high (or low, depending on your reference point). Issued in a single sleeve with colour printed inner sleeve with liner notes, images and credits. Label: Columbia, Albert Productions, Sony Music Barcode: 5099751075912

THE EX | pokkeherrie | LP

FINALLY, THE RE-RELEASE ON VINYL, YEAH!!! Original release-date 1985. Includes original A2-poster and LP-size booklet. Terrie (guitar), G.W. Sok (vocals), Luc (bass), Katrin (drums). Recorded at Emma's Koeienverhuurbedrijf, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Produced by Dolf Planteijdt. Pokkeherrie (Dutch for "terrible noise") is a 1985 album by The Ex, originally released on vinyl only on the Pokabilly label. The original release included an eleven-page booklet containing lyrics & artwork and a double sided poster. The album comprises a collection of songs the group had performed on an anti-military tour. The title of the album is a Dutch word that means something like "so much noise" or "awful noise". It is the first of the Ex's albums to feature Katrin on drums, cementing the band's core lineup that would last for nearly two decades. After releasing a record in support of Britain's coalminers' strike, The Ex wrote a collection of new songs for an anti-military tour that would form the basis for Pokkeherrie.Their drummer Sabien had just left the band to move to France and was replaced by German-born Katerina, previously of the Stuttgart trio 3Musketiere. The group recorded nine songs in the newly built Koeienverhuur Studio in the basement of a newly squatted building in Amsterdam where The Ex also rehearsed and gigged at the volunteer-run Emma venue. The album was released in September 1985 and, as with previous releases, contained a poster and a big booklet full of lyrics accompanied by drawings, this time portraits of visual artists whom the band admired. The album also features text by poet Nico van Apeldoorn. The Ex supported Pokkeherrie's release with tours of Britain, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. (Pockabilly Records)

Black Flag was unable to legally record and release records for three years. During this time the band had a radically different, avant-metal sound. In 1982, Black Flag was still a five piece, but they had pulled drumming powerhouse Chuck Biscuits behind the kit. In order to get Biscuits tour ready, the band snuck into Total Access studios and recorded and mixed a demo, all in one night. Black Flag in their prime. Historical release. This CD is almost part of a “forgotten” history, as there are not many quality recordings of Henry Rollins’s gang at this time, Black Flag as a five piece with Chuck Biscuits on drums before he joined forces with Glenn Danzig. Extensive liner notes. (Fan Club/Unofficial)
  • Q: Do you really want to read an umpteenth generic blurb about yet another random d-beat punk band? A: No you don't. So let's hear it from the, er, fans?: "I don't have a clue what d-beat is, but those guys seem alright?" – Charles, local bartender "Fucking thieves stealing riffs and getting away with it." – Asocial "…wait, they stole riffs too?" – Bambi, Stoke-on-Trent, UK "OK boomers" – Emma, 16 As the sky is once again studded with bombs the history repeats itself endlessly. “A giant game of chess they play with you and I as the disposable pieces” isn’t it ? There will always be atrocities to document and to denounce. This record fits perfectly to the current context. The lyrics have never been so meaningful in the sense that they depict a world where the dark side of the human race has the upper hand, where scorn and hatred know no end. Do we need to tell you that this new offering from BOMBARDEMENT is their best record ever and that you will never get enough of this raging punk deluge ? Yes, the guitars are like sharp incisors starving for revenge. Yes, the vocals resonate like bomb alerts. The future is here and it’s no fairy tale. (Destructure Records)

  • Not a lot of bands come from Boise, Idaho, however even if Septic Death were the only band to emerge from there, it should put the city on the map as birthing something great. The band was formed by late 70s/ early 80s California skate regular Brian Pushead Schroeder, who had already made a bit of a name in the underground hardcore/ punk scene not only as a skater, but as an artist. He began sending his art to bands and ‘zines in the early ’80s, and many of them chose to use it. Later he became the main artist for Zorlac Skateboards, designing the artwork for a special edition Metallica skateboard. The band soon used him to design art and t-shirts for them, which propelled him to even larger fame. At this point he has done art for tons of bands both big and small, and his unmistakable gruesome and original artwork and attention to detail was first brought into full bloom in the service of Septic Death. Now That I Have the Attention What Do I Do With It? (which came out in early ’86) is not actually an album proper, but a re-issue of the band’s first 12″ep Need So Much Attention… Acceptance Of Whom mixed with some compilation tracks and some new songs. Side A features 3 tracks from the 12″ep that have added guitars and re-recorded vocals, as well as songs from compilations such as Peace/War, Cleanse The Bacteria, and the Putrid Evil flexi (some re-recorded). Side B features the other 9 songs from the 12″ep in their original versions. Many bands, from Metallica to Integrity have heralded the brilliance of Septic Death (James Hetfield even did vocals on their follow-up 7″ep Burial, and Kirk Hammett played mead guitar on a song on their Kichigai 7″ep). If you like hardcore, thrash, crust, or extreme metal and you haven’t checked this album out, do yourself a favours and listen to it now. Track list: 1. Quit 2. Dream Silent 3. Child 4. Burial 5. Terrorain 6. Thaw (Cold World) 7. Poison Mask 8. Hardware 9. Silence 10. Sweat Of A Nightmare 11. Core Of Reality 12. Negative Threat 13. Never Trust 14. Mental Cancer 15. Fear 16. Advantage 17. Though famous for other things (including doing the synths on GARY NUMAN’s iconic “Pleasure Principal” album and co-writing VISAGE’s massive hit, “Fade To Grey”), Chris Payne brought THE ELECTRONIC CIRCUS to life in 1981. At the time, poised to become his next major project, the initial single “Direct Lines” gained little traction and quickly found its way to quiet obscurity. There it remained until some genius made a video using footage from Swedish film “Summer With Monika” that so perfectly fit the surging melancholy of youth’s temporary romances that the song garnered a million views and a new cult of rabid fans (me included! -Jensen). Once this synth-pop perfection enters you it will find permanent purchase and continue to be a joyous wellspring for years to come, truly a gift that keeps giving. Some records so perfectly capture an artist at a critical point in their creativity, and make such an impact, that they become not just synonymous with the band, but an essential piece of music history. Such is the case with Shock Troops, the album that not only became Cock Sparrer’s most acclaimed record, but a defining moment for Oi!, punk rock, and underground music in general! Originally released by Razor Records in 1983, Shock Troops proved to consist of song after song which would each become anthems of the burgeoning Oi! scene and far beyond. From the opening of “Where Are They Now?” on through “Take ‘Em All,” “We’re Coming Back,” all the way to the closing chords of “Out On An Island,” there isn’t a song in the bunch that any self respecting punk rocker can’t shout along to. These working class anthems are just as vital today, as proven by the crowds of beloved fans worldwide that continue to go wild at Sparrer’s live shows, where Shock Troops tracks still make up the heart of their setlists. It is with all due reverence for the nearly four decades of influence traceable to this one-of-a-kind album that Pirates Press Records makes certain this classic is always in print. For every old schooler looking to buy a gorgeous colored vinyl copy of an old favorite, and for every young punk kid learning what it’s all about, we are proud to present Cock Sparrer’s legendary LP, Shock Troops!
