It’s time to grow towards the sun again. It’s time for Change. Closer Still is the debut LP from Change, the Pacific Northwest Straight Edge band made up of Aram Arslanian, Chris Williams, Jeff Caffey, Mike Jurek and Matt Bertell. The record is 13 songs of urgent hardcore influenced by Youth of Today, Uniform Choice, INSTED, Sportswear, Turning Point and Embrace. However, the song writing pulls inspiration from across genres keeping the record from painting itself in a corner musically. Lyrically, Closer Still was written over a year and at its core is about coping with loss, anxiety and depression and trying to make the changes needed to find a better path. The songs focus on growth, both personal and social, and encourage embracing who we are while also working on becoming the best version of ourselves. Written and recorded by Aram Arslanian, Dave Mitchell, Carl McBeath and Alex Schollen, the LP was tracked and mixed by Jesse Gander at Rain City Records, with lead vocals recorded Avrinder Dhillon at Ziyen Studios and mastering by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. The record features art by Eric Himle and the packaging was designed by Evan Wivell with help from Jon A Gaasland. Closer Still will be released on LP through REACT! Records in North America and by Refuse Records in Europe, and on cassette by Life.Liar.Regret Records in Australia. (Refuse Records/2020)

This compilation gathers the best of their Japan singles issued in the 1990s and early 2000s, including the ‘King For A Day,’ ‘Kanpai,’ ‘Making Half A Killing’ and ‘The Dangerous Study’ EPs, as well as bonus tracks culled from the Punk’s Not Dead compilation. Out of stockFIRST VINYL REISSUE FOR THE CHARLOTTES' FIRST 12" WHICH ALSO INCLUDES THEIR FIRST 7" AND THE 'LOVE IN THE EMPTINESS' 12" AS BONUS. LIMITED 500 COPIES ON 180GR VINYL. Hailing from the small, conservative market town of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, The Charlottes rose from the ashes of a short-lived band called The Giant Polar Bears; before that, bassist David Fletcher had been in Red Over White, guitarist Graham Gargiulo had played in Mithrandir while drummer Simon Scott would eventually end up in Slowdive; early vocalist John Lindsell was replaced by Petra Roddis. Their debut single, “Are You Happy Now,” issued on the short-lived local independent, Moleworth Records, was in melodic power-pop mode; debut album Lovehappy was recorded in Bristol and released by Martin Whitehead’s Subway Organization in August 1989, to rave reviews. Championed by John Peel, it showcased their evolving “Wall of Guitar” sound, moving away from the tamer pop beginnings. Follow-up EP “Love In The Emptinesss” showed continued growth, the song constructions becoming more complex and layered, and when the group signed to Cherry Red in 1990, the single “Liar” began making waves in America, though the group somehow split right at this high-water mark; thankfully, the EP and single are both included on our expanded Lovehappy reissue. Out of stockFormed in 1976, legendary punk outfit Chelsea was assembled by the owners of the Acme Attractions boutique with Gene October as frontman; guitarist Billy Idol, bassist Tony James and drummer John Towe soon split to form Generation X, but their loss was Chelsea’s gain, with debut single ‘Right To Work’ rated one of the best punk songs of all time. Though their self-titled debut LP didn’t surface until 1979, when punk was waning, there is plenty to savour in October’s forceful vocals and James Stevenson’s powerful guitar licks, plus a plausible take of Jimmy Cliff’s ‘Many Rivers To Cross.’ A punk classic, ripe for rediscovery! Out of stockSurvival Research present a reissue of Chico Magnetic Band's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. Lyon-based freakers Chico Magnetic Band began as Chico & the Slow Death, its front man a wild Tunisian-born singer otherwise known as Mahmoud Ayari, with drummer Patrick Garel, bassist Alain Mazet, and guitarist Bernard Lloret, later replaced by Bernard Monneri. Conjuring a dark, excessive sound with unfettered guitar, pummeling drum rolls and Ayari growling and grumbling over the top, this sole LP is culled from different permutating sessions, with plenty of audio freakery and extreme effects from Jean-Pierre Massiera; Hendrix cover "Cross Town Traffic" is rendered with love, despite Ayari's hefty accent. VERY LIMITED VINYL PRESSING. The artwork for A Mind Is A Terrible Thing has been updated by Ross Sewage (Impale, Exhume) and remastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering. CHRIST ON PARADE started in 1985, rising from the ashes of local bands Treason and Teenage Warning. Like much of the punk music at the time, they had an intensely political edge and very serious lyrical approach. The "Peace Punk" scene of the early ‘80s Bay Area -- typified by local bands like PLH, Treason, Trial, Crucifix, and Atrocity, and heavily influenced by British anarcho-punk -- had a formative influence on many bands in the scene including CHRIST ON PARADE. CHRIST ON PARADE coalesced into a unique hybrid of influences that could have only happened in the venue / living space that most of the members dwelled in, Emeryville's New Method warehouse. At that time, a lot of the Oakland punks were into the almost "prog-punk" stylings of bands like the Subhumans, Santa Rosa's Victim's Family, and the darkly paranoid spasms of England's Rudimentary Peni. Musicianship had become a virtue rather than a non-issue. Punk musicians around the Bay were beginning to put in the hours of practice. This confluence of sounds and ideas, and the fact that the East Bay was awash with LSD in those days, led to CHRIST ON PARADE's classic LP, A Mind Is A Terrible Thing. The emotional expression found in A Mind Is A Terrible Thing is not so much angry as agonized. The album is a demonology of the dark undercurrent beneath the relentlessly inane and superficial ‘80s. Noah Landis's feral vocals and grindstone guitar spearhead the LP with second guitarist Doug Kearney, bass player Malcolm Sherwood, and drummer Todd Kramer turning in an equal number of distinctive songs and performances . The result is brooding and angular, often catchy but never poppy. The production is raw, but this unvarnished quality serves the music rather than detracts from it. The songs feature more or less straight-ahead thrashers like "Kill Your Landlord," apocalyptic post-punk like "Riding The Flatland," and many examples of CHRIST ON PARADE's trademark, genre-defying hellscapes like "Power" and "Teach Your Children Well." CHRIST ON PARADE's headlined the first show at Berkeley’s 924 Gilman Street, the venue that would usher in a new era of poppier punk and safer spaces. The band continued for a couple years, going through member changes and releasing more great material before finally breaking up in 1989. As America's current political and cultural climate goes from bad to worse, A Mind Is A Terrible Thingsounds better, deeper and more relevant with each passing day. -- Jesse Michaels (Neuroot Records)

Rising from the ashes of early-’80s East Bay punk bands Treason and Teenage Warning, Christ On Parade took the sound in new directions, combining to-the-point political lyrics and an unwavering DIY spirit with a driving hardcore assault. With the support of Maximum Rocknroll’s Tim Yohannan and others in the Bay Area punk scene, the band quickly gained a strong local following. Their debut LP, 1985’s Sounds of Nature, was originally released on legendary punk artist Pushead’s Pusmort label (Poison Idea, Septic Death). The liner notes state: “You can’t change anything by waiting for the “revolution” - you have to start living it today, creating a real community amongst the sterility of our modern world, and eventually the system will wither away.” Christ On Parade can also claim the honor of headlining the first ever show at Berkeley’s long-running 924 Gilman venue.
