The circumstances were ordinary: the results, extraordinary. In early 1982 I was having my usual 1 pm breakfast with disk jockey Rodney Bingenheimer at a very ordinary Denny's coffee shop when the visiting German director Uli Edel dropped by with Christiane Felscherinow in L.A. to promote the film Christiane F. (Wir Kinder von Bahnhof Zoo). Edel had intended to tour with the young actress Nadja Brunckhorst but her father had vetoed the trip, so the real Christiane F. went, swearing to keep clean. We found out much later, she didn't. Over pancakes, Rodney mischievously suggested to the still teenaged Christiane that she should make a record. And Posh Boy across the table could make it happen! I made one phone call to then New York based David Javelosa of Posh Boy act Los Microwaves who leapt at the opportunity at producing a high profile release that could be as dada as he liked on a budget of USD l000. Within hours, not days, everything was set up. • Debut EP by the Greek band Chronoboros. Expect some noisy hardcore spewed out the gate, along with sludgy parts and a left-of-field mentality. Recorded live, this EP captures the kinetic energy, raw power, and some of the trio’s post-hardcore tendencies exhibited in their early stages. For fans of Melvins, Unsane, Botch. Limited to 350 hand numbered copies. (Body Blows Records‎/2016)
  • Roiling, distressed rock riffs and menacing, propulsive rhythms. The fourth release in the Greek band’s discography is a more mainlined effort than before, putting together their eclectic mix of hardcore, noise rock, sludge and post-hardcore tendencies under the prism of the misanthropic and elusive aesthetic of their lyrics. Fiercely antisocial and always independent, this record delivers postmodern anxiety and heavy handed riffage, where the technical moments never outshine their punk ethos. The band was formed in late 2014 in Athens, Greece, has toured throughout the Greek DIY circuit, performed a European tour, and supported such diverse acts as Dälek, Aluk Todolo, and Raketkanon. FFO: Botch, Breach, Will Haven Limited pressing of 100 copies, self-released Recorded live at Ignite Music Studio Recorded, mixed, mastered by George Christoforidis Artwork by Sealitwithsilver
  • Formed in 2014, Chronoboros is a noise/post-hardcore trio from Athens, Greece. Following their debut EP, their new release is called 'No Dirt or Silver Will Have Us Sated' and features 10 songs spanning over 34 minutes. Drawing elements from their previous work, this record touches on 90s noise rock, post-hardcore and sludge metal. With transgressive lyrical content and themes, progressive changes between harsh and soft dynamics, and a tight yet experimental approach to sound, Chronoboros have a distinctive take on end-of-times music. Speed Kills is the debut full length from London's loudest breakout band Chubby and the Gang. Beginning as a humble pipe dream of West London electrician Charlie Manning, who spent years finding his way through the London punk and hardcore scene, the album is the manifestation of a musical mind marinating in hard punk, pub rock, blues, and doo-wop. From the sneering eternity of "All Along the Uxbridge Road," to the Hammond Organ smeared "Bruce Grove Bullies" -- the songs will have you reaching for your London A to Z and trying your hardest not to spill your pint. Finding a new home on Partisan Records, Speed Kills has been remastered at West London’s Metropolis Studios and features a previously unreleased track “Union Dues”. Label: Partisan Records
  • West London five-piece Chubby and the Gang are balanced by two energies – a casual “fuck it” on one side, an active “fuck off” on the other. For every moment of punk imperfection, there’s an intricate flurry of detail. For every enraged statement about modern life as war, there’s a lyric like “Hello heartbreak, my old friend” that catches you off guard. Made up of musicians from across the consistently thriving and criminally overlooked UK hardcore scene (ft. The Chisel, Big Cheese and more), Chubby and the Gang marinate its characteristic speed and sick-of-it-all energy in a mixture of 50s pop sounds. The result is a prickly take on the older, more melodic genres that punk derives from, chewing them up and spitting them out into something mangled but revitalised. Fronted by Charlie Manning Walker (aka Chubby Charles) and backed by Tom ‘Razor’ Hardwick, Meg Brooks Mills, Ethan Stahl and Joe McMahon (aka the Gang), the band tell stories of modern London. • Chuck Ragan's bracing 2014 release TILL MIDNIGHT once again confirms what the iconoclastic singer/songwriter's fans have known all along; that he's a deeply compelling songwriter and an effortlessly charismatic performer, as well as a true believer in music's ability to illuminate and inspire. Till Midnight is the fourth studio album by Chuck Ragan, which was recorded in 2013 and produced by Christopher Thorn. The album was recorded at the Fireside Sound and Fonogenic Studios in Los Angeles. Guest vocalists include Ben Nichols (of Lucero), Dave Hause (of The Loved Ones), Jenny O., Chad Price, and Jon Snodgrass (of Drag the River). (SideOneDummy Records – SD1538-1)

Brand new fast hardcore from London. A perfect blending of early 80’s fast hardcore (think HATED YOUTH) being filtered through the late 80’s UK explosion while still young enough to be having a blast. I can’t wait to see what this band comes up with next. Featuring members of THE ANNHILIATED and LAST AFFRONT. (Static Shock Records)
  • New release in the making and i couldn’t be happier about this one, another killer debut from a new band!! Since i feel lazy to write a text today and Ian already did a great job doing it a while ago here it is from the man himself: “A few months ago a friend was in town from London and we decided to spend a day writing songs instead of sitting at the bar. We sat on the recording for a few months until Mat from FUERZA BRUTA recorded vocals for it. It turned out pretty cool and is coming out as a 7” on Mendeku Diskak later this year. Members of LOST LEGION, FUERZA BRUTA, THE CHISEL and ARM’S RACE. Sounds like if 80’s Brazilian HC bands had been more into AGNOSTIC FRONT and NABAT than TERVEET KÄDET” Recorded by Ian Wise at Wright on Carrol Mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios Art and layout by Ian Wise Label: Mendeku Diskak

  • Shortly after Keith Morris quit the role of being the front man of BLACK FLAG, he teamed up with guitarist Greg (who later joined BAD RELIGION) to form what now is known as one of "the" most classic early '80s Southern California punk bands. "group sex" is the '80 14 track debut highly recommended for any fan of humorous, ground breaking punk-rock music. This is arguably Los Angeles punk at its best! (Frontier Records)
  • Legendary L.A. hardcore punk band the Circle Jerks change their approach a bit on their major-label debut, Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities. The album contains 12 songs that lean more toward a punk-inspired hard rock approach than their earlier hardcore sound. The tracks on this effort are also longer than many of their earlier recordings. Compared to their early classic “In Your Eyes,” which runs all of 46 seconds, “Sinking Ship,” at three minutes and 48 seconds, is practically an epic. This may be a change of pace, but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This set still displays plenty of the trademarks that make the Circle Jerks so endearing, including Keith Morris’ distinct howling vocal style, Greg Hetson’s great guitar work, and their unmistakable sense of humor. Nowhere on this album, or possibly in the band’s entire career, has their sense of humor been so prominently on display than on their cover of the Soft Boys’ “I Wanna Destroy You,” which features guest vocals by none other than former teen queen Debbie Gibson. This collaboration is not only brilliant but could only be pulled off by the Circle Jerks. “22,” “Teenage Electric,” and “Fable” are straightforward rockers that set the tone for rest of the album. Although the mainstream sound and more polished production may alienate a few early fans who are looking for something more hardcore, this is an excellent hard rock album with few weak spots along the way. Released in 1982, ‘Wild In The Streets’ was the second LP from hardcore punk pioneers Circle Jerks. Featuring the title track single that dated from two years before, the album now comes with three bonus live tracks for its fortieth anniversary edition via Trust Records, plus a booklet of rare images and an essay on the record’s making and impact. • Features 3 bonus songs recorded live in San Francisco, CA (1982) • Remastered from the original analog tapes by Pete Lyman (Infrasonic Mastering) • Includes deluxe 20-page booklet with exclusive photos, memorabilia, and album history by Chris Morris. (Trust Records)
  • Unreleased, alternate mix of their legendary 1983 album taken from the original tapes. Fast and furious, early '80s, Southern California hardcore. The original album is now considered a pioneering classic of American hardcore for its lyrics dealing with teenage frustration and angst, along with such bands as Suicidal Tendencies and Black Flag. "CIRCLE ONE is a band I only know through their reputation—and through stories of singer John Macias being killed by police at the age of 29. It’s Macias’s vocals which are the most interesting component of this reissue. Atop mid-tempo to fast SoCal hardcore, Macias sings with way more theatrics than I expected, reminding me of Jello on late DEAD KENNEDYS stuff, or, alternately, Jack Grisham of TSOL." Reviewer Michael T. Fournier MRR #460 • September 2021 (Puke n Vomit Records)
  • The second Album from this Minneapolis trio -- a strikingly-hyper-punk-rock-conundrum. Seriously, Citric Dummies have a LOT to say on this LP, be it worthwhile advice or not, but it's all done with an excellent tongue-in-cheek bravado. Oh yeah, the music - it's a trebly, garage-leaning mess that seems to catapult between backing the obnoxious dual-vocal assault and ramping up the speed towards a proto-hardcore feel at times. Strangely enough, it's taken this long for a band to remind me of Henry Fiat's Open Sore (check those mad Swedes out for extra credit if you haven't!) but between the snappy arrangements and lyrical genius, Citric Dummies may very well win an endearing spot in yer collection. I get the same kinda dumb, personable feeling while listening to this as say...Angry Samoans. Real music for the proles, eh? The Dummies receive bonus points for their highly apt usage of parentheses in song titles and stunning full color artwork from Nathan Ward. Out of the ashes of Brain Tumors comes the Dummies, the Citric ones. Brain Tumors was pretty good, but man... Citric Dummies are way, way better. I really have no idea how to describe their sound... I mean it's definitely hardcore, but it has these really distinctive vocals that are kinda-sorta melodic most of the time, but often erupt into these big sing-song choruses that really don't sound like much of anything I've ever heard. Jerky punk guitar driven calamitous tunes with hyper yet clear and tuneful vocals hurling toilet lyrics and an attitude that is also of-the-toilet. Its an album! An album whose grooves are densely packed with the sounds of angry nerds propelling their rotten attitudes down deep into the basement. The punk basement. ATTENTION! This does not sound like Devo or Sheer Mag. Buy and fry. Label: Erste Theke
  • Barcelona's CIUDAD LINEAL finally deliver the follow up to their fantastic demo from 2013. A full length album of dark minimal wave heavily influenced by EL AVIADOR DRO Y SUS OBREROS ESPECIALIZADOS, THE NORMAL or CABARET VOLTAIRE. Armed with a bass guitar, drum pad, a keyboard and two synths CIUDAD LINEAL manage to create a conceptual piece around the idea of progress and industry as opposing forces. El Nuevo Hombre is divided into two parts each one comprising one side of the album. The A side being "The Splendor" and the B side "The Fall" joined by a speech symbolizing Mankind's awakening. The album throws shades of JOY DIVISION, DECIMA VICTIMA or even THE RESIDENTS leaving behind absolute hits like the freezing cold opening track "Horizonte" or "Industria" which to these ears is the closest anyone has ever came to being part of the LOS INICIADOS/FRACCION DEL EJERCITO ROJO/ AVIADOR family. While CIUDAD LINEAL'S sound is certainly rooted in the early 80's synth explosion the band remains fresh due to their lyrical approach as well as their DIY ethos. The LP was recorded at La Cova De la Bestia by Daniel Muerte and comes housed in a beautifully put together sleeve and insert designed by the band and printed on heavy 350 gsm reverse board. Limited and hand-numbered to 1000 copies. Includes lyric sheet. Track B7 is a bonus track. Without a label deal, CJ wrote and recorded his debut solo album, Reconquista, the old school, DIY way, with assistance from Steve Soto of the Adolescents and a number of other punk rock luminaries lending their musical chops. With an album that had the honesty and sound that so many Ramones copycats just never got right, along with instant classics like “What We Gonna Do Now” and his heartwarming tribute to Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee, “Three Angels,” CJ Ramone cemented his place in Ramones history. And it was only the beginning. Back in 2012, CJ Ramone and long time Ramones crew member Gene Frawley asked us to help get his debut solo album out there, making sure CJ had records to sell when he hit the road. This wasn’t a Ramones nostalgia trip—though of course CJ and his band obliged the fans with the requisite classics—this was a mission to write and record albums in his own right, that could sit proudly in a Ramones fan’s collection; carrying on the legacy left by his fallen brothers. If you’ve ever spent any time in the darkest recesses of the internet, you’ll know that ‘powerpop’ is an emotive term. For every pockmarked tenderfoot flying the flag for some fuzzed-out alterna-rocker’s harmony-drenched new single, there’s a grizzled veteran insisting that there’s not enough jangle, not enough hook, not enough oomph on display (‘I hear the pop, but where’s the power?’). Basically, if you thought ‘what is punk’ was a granular debate, trust me: you ain’t seen nothing yet. Anyway, sidestepping the fact that I clearly am one of their kind, let’s just say a quick ‘fuck those nerds’. This is where Class come in. Class are a four-piece from Tucson, AZ, who are most assuredly all the power, all the pop, all the time. They’ve served time in a bunch of bands you already know and love – most notably everyone’s favourite ‘delinquent slobs’ Rik And The Pigs – and Matt Rendon of their citymates The Resonars is the guy behind the mixing desk, so you know whatever comes out is gonna be good. ‘2-4-1’ compiles the two cassettes they’ve released on Cincinnati’s Feel It Records (which also released their debut LP proper, ‘Epoca De Las Vaqueros’) and it’s absolutely rammed with new pop classics. ‘Steady Hands’, ‘Wrong Side Of Town’, ‘Inspect The Receipt’, ‘Left In The Sink’… get learning these titles now, ’cause you’re gonna get very well acquainted when you spin ’em until your needle’s worn down to a flattened-out nub. Sound-wise, it’s pop music as envisioned by the punks – straight to the point, no fucking about. Some of these songs feel like Alex Chilton playing ‘September Gurls’ on a curious cocktail of cheap speed and wayyy too much sugar; others are kinda like the aforementioned Resonars if they ditched their British Invasion records and got obsessed with a heady mixture of The #1s and Richard Lloyd’s ‘Alchemy’. Sometimes it just sounds like a forgotten late 70s punk classic, so I think we’re all in the right place here. It’s scuzzy and scuffed up in all the right places, with blazing guitar solos and crashing drum fills designed to get you where you need to go, with a minimum of fuss. ‘Class’ is an apt name. As you’d expect from a band with three vocalists, there’s more than one style at play here, meaning this record pulls from enough varying strands to keep things interesting without sounding unfocused. There’s no time to get bored, unlike when reading my drivel. What the fuck are you waiting for? This is power pop at its best, punk at its funnest, a whale of a time in less than 30 minutes. Let the nerds wage war on each other – clearly, I’ll be reading it – and claim your own victory by playing this one to death. This band are in a class of their own, and if I’ve not laid it out explicitly enough, you need to start listening. Now. Label: Drunken Sailor Records
  • Class of Tucson AZ - instantly familiar, idiosyncratic to the max, a glorious collision in which several of American punk’s leading lights emerge from their vehicles unscathed (though I make no promises for the rest of you, see below). What more can I say about 2022’s most eagerly anticipated full-length album? ( a bit more as it turns out, which is fortunate as my fee is pretty expensive, onerous, even) These songs have the requisite crunch / glue ratio and more than anyone else in their idiom, remind me of moments that don’t happen nearly enough, in rock, in life, when your eyes are closed, anywhere. I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to presume the persons responsible for these gems are keen students of the last 40+ years of underground/overground sounds (the good shit anyway), but there’s a singular voice, a defined worldview if you will, somehow cutting through our bland, brutal, grim as fuck moment in history. If you think I’m building Class up a bit much, I can promise you this — there’s at least a half dozen people I know who will hear this record and immediately fall into the throes of a deep depression because they’re _not in this band_ . And if you’re wary of being hyped-2-death, spare a thought for me for just a minute. I’m the one who’s gonna have to talk them off a ledge (figuratively, it’s mostly single stories in this part of the country). -Gerard Cosloy (Feel It Records)
