Amy Winehouse's debut album represents her world and her soul. It is a collision between 21st century London's urban soundscapes, the great jazz voices of the last century and the emotional experience of a 19 year old jewish girl with a lot to say. PRONG | beg to differ | LP

    25.00 incl. tax
Former New York club CBGB's soundman Tommy Victor founded Prong in 1987 as his outlet for sonic fury. Having their roots in the Thrash Metal and Hardcore scenes, Prong carved a niche for themselves - groovy, angry, massive; just perfect mosh music. The trio wrecked stages and impressed audiences all over the world. Their first album on a major label promised a bright future for industrial New York Hardcore Metal band Prong. Beg To Differ contains 10 hard-hitting tracks, of which the video for "Beg To Differ" got heavy rotation on MTV. A second single "Lost And Found" equally appealed to the fans. Chugga chugga riffs, triggered drums, and angry vocals complete the package. Beg To Differ is available on black vinyl and includes an insert. (Music On Vinyl – MOVLP876, Epic – MOVLP876)

  • Breaking a decade of omertà, The Mars Volta reawaken from their lengthy hiatus with an eponymous album that radically reshapes their paradigm. Formed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, The Mars Volta rose from the ashes of El Paso punk-rock firebrands At The Drive-In in 2001. On a mission to “honour our roots and honour our dead”, The Mars Volta made music that fused the Latin sounds Rodríguez-López was raised on with the punk and underground noise he and Bixler-Zavala had immersed themselves in for years, and the futuristic visions they were tapping into. The albums that followed were one-of-a-kind masterpieces, their songs of breath-taking complexity also possessing powerful emotional immediacy. After the group fell silent, a legion of devotees (including Kanye West) kept up an insistent drum-beat for their return. Now – a year after La Realidad De Los Sueños, a luxurious 18-LP box-set compiling their back catalogue, sold out its 5,000 print run in under 24 hours – the duo are back, accompanied this time by founder bassist Eva Gardner, drummer Willy Rodriguez Quiñones and keyboard-player Marcel Rodríguez-López. This album shakes loose some of The Mars Volta’s long-standing shibboleths and the dizzying, abrasive prog stylings of earlier albums absent. Instead, The Mars Volta pulses with subtle brilliance, Caribbean rhythms underpinning sophisticated, turbulent songcraft. This is The Mars Volta at their most mature, most concise, most focused. Their sound and fury channelled to greatest effect, The Mars Volta finds Rodríguez-López’s subterranean pop melodies driving Bixler-Zavala’s dark sci-fi tales of the occult and malevolent governments. Distilling all the passion, poetry and power at their fingertips, The Mars Volta is the most accessible music the group have ever recorded. Includes 4 page booklet with, lyrics, liner notes, and credits. (Clouds Hill – CH300)

  • Gil Scott-Heron’s “Pieces Of A Man” is one of the most important albums in the history of black American music. Although it didn’t set the charts alight, it stands as a masterpiece alongside contemporary works such as Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”, Curtis Mayfield’s debut LP, Funkadelic's “Maggot Brain” and Isaac Hayes’ “Shaft”. All were brilliant in their way, but lyrically Scott-Heron was on a different level from almost every other writer. “Pieces Of A Man” was contemporary music performed by great jazz players, directed and prompted by Scott-Heron and his collaborator Brian Jackson, who at the time was not yet 20 years old. 180 Gram, Gatefold. After two singles for Fast Product, Leeds art-punk collective The Mekons signed with Virgin Records in 1979. The band would have to borrow gear from their mates Gang Of Four to record their major label debut. In classic Mekons style, the album's back cover featured a photo of Gang Of Four instead of themselves. As Simon Reynolds writes, "The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen got a mixed reception at the time. Listening to it now, though, the first LP sounds more of a piece with the band's early punk singles. What's striking is the commonality of sound across the three key Leeds groups of that moment (Gang Of Four, Delta 5 and The Mekons). There are textural affinities in terms of scrawny abrasiveness and a general departure from rock 'n' roll norms of singing and emoting." With boundless energy, The Mekons net a dozen barbed takes on pop culture, art and politics. "What Are We Going To Do Tonight" stands out as a razor-sharp critique of leisure, while "Beetroot" drowns apathy in angular riffs and catchy, unmelodic chants. Clad in one of the most striking record covers of its era, The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen is now available in the US for the first time. Liner notes by Simon Reynolds. (Superior Viaduct Records)
  • Witness the sonic evolution of ANTiSEEN with these tracks, originally released on their mid-80s EPs and now all together for the first time on vinyl. Newly remastered and with previously unreleased photography, this is the Kings of Destructo-Rock at their most primal!! According to Jeff Clayton´s words: "What you have here is a collection of the earliest releases of a band made up mostly of small southern town guys trying to make a name for themselves in the “big city”. With little help or guidance (with the exception of a few very influential cases) we created what became OUR sound and OUR attitude that would stay with us for four decades. Come hear the DAWN OF ANTISEEN." Limited to 600 units. For fans of GG ALLIN, DWARVES, BORED!... (Bang! Records)

"1986-1989" compiles the earliest output of Swedish HC veterans Totalitär. It includes tracks from the "Snabb Livsgladje" Demo '86 EP, the "Multinationella Mordare" EP, the "Luftslott" EP and the "Vand Dig Inte Om" EP, further topped off by some raw live tracks from their 1989 UK tour with Doom. Thirty tracks in all, and the booklet contains lyrics and liner notes courtesy of the band. Totalitär's greatness comes from their ability to take the Scandinavian D-Beat school of hardcore and blend it with the more melodic side of punk - without losing any of the drive and intensity. It creates some truly unique, memorable and catchy as hell songwriting. A classic, influential and essential documentation of their early sound. Label: Skrammel Records

Originally released in demo form, in 2022 the band went into the studio and fully re-recorded the songs. 'What if Blitz hailed from Los Angeles and sang in Spanish’ isn’t a question you hear all that often. Fortunately, we don’t need to ask - the answer is provided by Generacion Suicida’s latest album, which rages and rattles in all the right places, drenched in the memorable brilliance that powered the Killed By Death compilations (ask yer dad - and if he doesn’t know or care, burn his terrible records and make some space to track down the KBD LPs). The band’s slogan is ‘musica del barrio, para el barrio’ - music from the neighbourhood, for the neighbourhood - but it sounds like they could use these hooks to take on the world. That’s a pretty accurate sentiment as well, because this album was written during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, while the world bubbled over with carefully managed misinformation, police violence and the sickening overspill of white supremacy’s foul brew. If Regeneracion sounds potent, it’s because there was a lot to be angry about, and the result is arguably their best album yet. Those chorused-out guitar lines carry shades of deathrock, hints of Manchester circa 1980, elements of something you might call goth if it was several degrees less furious. But there’s no doomed romance to this music; it’s an all-out attack. Street punk with the smarts turned up and an ear turned to the lessons learned from post-punk (but crucially, not the ‘post-punk revival’ that is essentially shirtless beardy lads chanting non-sequiturs over landfill indie). Chiefly, it’ll make you wanna get out of your chair, unite your local community and march on down towards your government’s centre of operations with a simple-to-use molotov cocktail kit. Its rage is infectious. It’s inspired by bleak moments in our recent shared history, but it revels in humans’ capacity to find strength in each other. And the tunes? Oh damn, they’re good.' Will Fitzpatrick. (Drunken Sailor Records)
  • After 33 long years the new album by classic Dischord band, recorded by J. Robbins. We started writing the songs for A Brief Moment in the Sun in late 2020. It was daunting at first trying to make music virtually from four separate locations (NYC, Los Angeles, North Carolina, Austria) in the middle of a global pandemic, but we quickly found a songwriting groove and we added biweekly video conference calls to keep ourselves on track. By early 2021, we realized that there was something very special and passionate (and urgent) happening in these songs, and in November we met up for four days of in-person rehearsals in Brooklyn before heading down to Magpie Cage Studio in Baltimore to record the album with our old friend J. Robbins. It was pretty incredible working with J., who inspired some crucial changes to the songs, and Ian MacKaye came to the studio for two days to help make them even stronger. A Brief Moment in the Sun is a narrative LP, full of stories: some based on Bobby’s personal experiences and others addressing volatile sociopolitical themes, including an historical perspective on racial oppression in the United States. In both the music and the lyrics, this new album picks up where Soulside left off years ago—but with zero nostalgia in the mix. (Dischord Records)

  • Down is an album by the Chicago band The Jesus Lizard. It was their last album for Touch and Go records and the last to be produced by Steve Albini. The song "Horse" was labeled as "Pony Beat" on set lists for live shows. David Wm. Sims plays an organ on the album version. A video was created for the song "Destroy Before Reading," featuring David Yow as simply a head in laboratory. The painting on the cover is "Falling Dog" by Malcolm Bucknall, for which Bucknall asked no pay and offers no explanation. Bucknall also did the cover art for the Puss/Oh, the Guilt split single with Nirvana and the Jesus Lizard's Liar album. (Touch and Go!)
  • Before Dan Kleinʼs unfortunate passing, The Frightnrs agreed to keep a promise he asked of them - continue making music together. Part of that promise has been made manifest here... Daptone Records is proud to present ALWAYS - the raw, soulful new long player from The Frightnrs. The road to Always began with a period of intense songwriting back when The Frightnrs and producer Victor Axelrod (Ticklah) were working on the group's debut, rocksteady masterpiece, Nothing More to Say. In addition to the scorchers heard therein, Axelrod and The Frightnrs agreed many of the recordings were too sweet to tamper with in order to fit the rocksteady mold. Some were created at their headquarters in Queens with Dan on the mic, some were elaborations on older ideas, others were brand new creations made at the finish line. Thanks to the vocal stems they had captured in this golden period, Dan Kleinʼs other-worldly voice lived on, giving The Frightnrs all the raw material they needed for an entire albumʼs worth of new, original music. So with that, The Frightnrs and Axelrod returned to the studio and painstakingly conceptualized, tracked, re-tracked and mixed them into a complete album with their beloved friend singing lead. The fruits of this arduous process lay bare the undying love and respect between musical brothers. The last song written for this album, "Why Does it Feel Like a Curse", married two song concepts with one of Dan's original vocal performances - creating a beautiful, flawless composition that not only serves as a highlight reel of their editing skills and songwriting prowess, but also as a kind of metaphor for The Frightnrs journey. The perfect ending for ALWAYS. (Daptone Records)

..another journey through the vaults of the most incredible underground rarities! A mysterious and totally undiscovered jewel of 80’s Japanese Metal from the Hokuriku area only known in the most diehard circles of tape-trading maniacs. This “Demo 1986” collection is all focused on their early recordings, blending a NWOBHM influenced approach with some serious Sortilège worship and a speed metal touch. It includes the following works: debut demotape 1986 and 2 unreleased studio tracks 1987. Links: their drummer Yano Angel later joined the rocking hardcore punk unit called BLANQUISME known for a demo and a 7″ (1989). LP with OBI strip, bonus CD with extended contents and a stunning 16 page booklet full of photos and scans of the rare original demotape. Disclaimer: just as for many other Japanese Metal bands of that era (Rommel, Mein Kampf, Rosenfeld etc…) you will notice a recurring use of controversial symbols in the band’s photos and artworks. Quoting HELL BOUND themselves: “In the 80’s Japanese scene it was mostly used to enhance the shocking factor without any political references. Some of you may also find some connection to this imagery in our lyrics: actually, we were trying to express our contempt towards the mistakes made by the Nazis, but our English was poor and easily misunderstood. Later on we stopped using those symbols in our artworks because we thought it was wrong, despite the shocking value. We are firmly opposed Nazism and any form of discrimination.” Diehard army green vinyl limited to 150. (F.O.A.D. Records)

Remastered and reissued on Anti. Expanding beyond the folk and pop stylings of his first album, Waits’ second studio release Heart of Saturday Night established his reputation as a versatile and distinctly American songwriter. Its bluesy jazz arrangements featured bass, drums, sax and Waits on piano. The title track, a melancholy ode to Saturday night rituals, and the tenderly romantic hymn-like San Diego Serenade are enduring classics covered by an array of artists from Diana Krall and Nancy Griffith to folk hero Eric Anderson. The album also features Diamonds on My Windshield, the first of what would become a signature for Waits’, the spoken word-poetry song. Waits’ delivers these lyrics as pure beat jazz in the stylings of Kerouac. Newly Remastered with Waits/Brennan. 180 Gram (Anti/2018)

Well, look who’s back! There was a time not so long ago when Liquids’ Mat Williams seemed like the most prolific lo-fi maverick this side of Robert Pollard, as the Indiana collective pumped out two albums (one a double) and a whole mess of tapes and 7” EPs between 2015-18. With a line-up that’s best described as ‘fluid’ (no pun, my babe, no pun), although it once included Mark Winter of fellow weirdos Coneheads on drums, Liquids burned brightly in a haze of creativity, grinding hardcore, Ramonescore pop, Devo-inspired weirdness, new wave and more into their own rough-edged concoction. It was addictive, it was fucked up, it was quite possibly genius (seriously, if you’ve not heard 2016’s ‘Hot Liqs’ LP, go right that wrong immediately). Then… nothing. Until last year, that is. Liquids re-appeared in 2021 with a brand new album that dropped online out of nowhere. Who’s in the band? Fuck knows. Williams, you’d presume – they’re not known for giving much away. The surprise offering picked up where they’d left off, with sneering melody turned all the way up and fidelity right down, except this time they’d come armed with country balladry, an unexpected dip into doo-wop and a full-throttle smash’n’grab raid on Meat Loaf’s overblown anthem Bat Out Of Hell. Yep, really. It’s titled ‘Life Is Pain Idiot’ and it might just be the best thing they’ve done thus far. So here’s some more good news: Drunken Sailor are now bringing this mighty collection to vinyl, so you can treasure it just as much as ‘Hot Liqs’ or the ‘Live At Mat’s House’ tape or ‘Heart Beats True EP’. Put it on your turntable, put it in your ears, just put it somewhere and accept that you will love it. This is inevitable. Liquids have got a lot of things right, but here’s two more for starters: life truly is pain, and we are indeed all idiots. This album goes some way to redressing the balance when it comes to the former, and as for idiocy… well, you ain’t getting any smarter by not listening to it, dummy. Get involved. ‘Going Through The Motions’ is the first full-length vinyl collection of The Prefects studio recordings. Although a few tunes don’t stray from the general sounds of their time, there’s innovation and humour here. Escort Girls may be the first recorded forerunner of American hardcore. The Bristol Road Leads To Dachau hints at Joy Division’s later The Atrocity Exhibition. Taking it a step farther than Alternative TV’s How Much Longer with its deliberate dirge, Going Through The Motions, mocks punk expectation against an almost psychedelic haze. Total Luck bears the early evidence of Lloyd’s lone-man confessional style, and Barbarella’s is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to their most-played local venue. Versions of The Modern Lovers’ She Cracked and the Prefects’ original 625 Lines were recorded live by Virgin on the final two nights of Manchester’s Electric Circus and later issued as a compilation with tracks by The Fall, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division and others. The Prefects refused release of their material, believing their first outing should be a studio recording, not a live track or two on a compilation. During the White Riot tour, members of Subway Sect, The Slits and The Prefects joined in on a live encore loosely based on Velvet Underground’s Sister Ray. Incredibly difficult to listen to, the song was bootlegged widely before eventually appearing on The Slits’ 1980 album of early demos in a 5’20” version called “No More Rock And Roll For You”. Twenty years later, Vic Godard of Subway Sect edited a minute from the recording and released it on his Twenty Odd Years compilation. Two decades later, The Prefects have edited more than a minute from it and retitled it White Riot Tour. In another twenty years, it is hoped that the prolonged rite of ritual shortening of this song will leave no trace of it at all. For the record, it’s Robert Lloyd going “wooo-ooo” in the background, in what he says was an attempt to mimic the organ part from Sister Ray, which, listeners may note, is no longer being played. This is the opening salvo in the telling of Robert Lloyd’s career, which will include King Rocker: A film about Robert Lloyd & The Nightingales, by comedian and writer Stewart Lee, director Michael Cumming and Fire Films’ James Nicholls. The Catatonics were Syracuse and Central New York’s first harcore punk band. Besides pioneering the original 1981/1982 Syracuse Hardcore scene, their classic Hunted Down ep is considered one of the first hardcore thrash/metal crossover releases, right up there with COC or DRI and remains a sought after (and pricey) collectors item 30+ years after it's release. Often compared to Jerry's Kids, SSD, Negative Approach and even Slayer, The Catatonics weren't followers or imitators, more like period contemporaries. A crucial collection of all known recordings from Syracuse's legendary punk/hardcore pioneers: The Catatonics! Blistering, intense, raging 80's American Hardcore Power! Includes: the holy grail “Hunted Down” 7-inch, compilation tracks, early demos and live recordings remastered from original tapes. Comprehensive 12-page booklet with liner notes, photos, and more! • DEATH, the heavy metal institution founded, realized, and helmed by legendary guitarist Chuck Schuldiner, released the Individual Thought Patterns album (the follow-up to their watershed Human release) in 1993. Expectations were high following Human, but Schuldiner proved once again that he could rise to any occasion. Individual Thought Patterns further honed the forward-thinking and progressive direction birthed with Human, and included “The Philosopher”; arguably the best song to ever come from the world of extreme metal and to this date the most widely-recognized. • Sacred Bones is an independent record label and publishing company based in Brooklyn, NY that started over 15 years ago in the basement of a record store and has gone on to become a critically respected label that is synonymous with forward-thinking music and culture and won the 2020 Libera Award for Label of the Year. With over 300 releases under our belt, we’ve had the distinct pleasure to work with legendary artists the likes of Mort Garson, Patti Smith, Trent Reznor, and the late Genesis P-Orridge, as well as fostered the respective music careers of film directors David Lynch, John Carpenter, and Jim Jarmusch. We’ve also released career-defining albums by newer artists like Zola Jesus, SPELLLING, Molchat Doma, Marissa Nadler, Amen Dunes, and Jenny Hval, all while retaining our cult underground through smaller curated releases from some of the best punk and experimental artists. Our fifteenth anniversary as a label will be honored with several events and an exciting vinyl repress collection but the crown jewel of this year’s celebration is the compilation Todo Muere that features beloved artists from our roster covering their favorite songs that we have released over the years. The compilation features innovative pairings, like punk stalwarts Institute covering art pop sensation SPELLLING, and matches made in heaven like Marissa Nadler’s gorgeously eerie cover of David Lynch’s already eerie song “Cold Wind Blowin.” Some songs are sister renditions with their own imaginative touch like Constant Smiles’ cover of Jenny Hval while others, like the Zola Jesus song performed by Thou, Mizmor and Emma Ruth Rundle take on entirely different genres. And while each song on the comp stands on its own as a testament to the many song writing and song performance talents housed on the Sacred Bones roster, the compilation as a whole was sequenced as a cohesive whole deserving prime placement on any record shelf.
