“Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By” is the second album released by the Drones. The album draws influence from the likes of Neil Young and The Birthday Party, though it has been described by lead singer/guitarist Gareth Liddiard himself as a punk rock album. The lyrics, penned by Liddiard, deal with issues such as death, depression and alcoholism in its depiction of Australian working-class life. The album received critical acclaim upon release, regarded later on as the band's "break-out" and one of their most popular releases. The track "Shark Fin Blues", in particular, went on to become a concert staple and was voted by contemporary Australian songwriters as the greatest Australian song of all time in October 2009. The album itself was performed live in its entirety many times, even as a part of the acclaimed Don't Look Back concert series. In 2008, The Age ranked it the best Australian album of the 21st century. Three years later, the band's contemporaries & "industry experts" would vote it the 24th best Australian album of all time. Frontman MJ Howells and his drumming brother Peter Purrfect formed glam-rock band Rockslide in Manchester in the mid-1970s with bassist Wispa Cundall and guitarist Vic Long but changed direction after seeing the Sex Pistols; Long was replaced by guitarist Gus Gangrene and after shifting to London, their new identity was pure punk. Debut EP Temptations Of A White Collar Worker sold 14,000 copies in short shrift, paving the way for the dynamite LP Further Temptations, the sole long-player they managed before splitting in the mid-1980s. Way out there. From up in the attic, in the village of Cincinnati - the third album from the Drin has arrived to commence 2023. Cold rhythms reverberate through the layers of tape spliced together by Dylan McCartney and his impressive cadre of musical companions. The Drin spawned from a debut cassette edition of 50 on the Future Shock label, since teaming up with both Drunken Sailor and Mangel to issue two LPs. Their loose, careening live unit features members of Corker, Crime of Passing, the Serfs and Fruit LoOops. 'Today My Friend You Drunk the Venom' is the Drin's finest hour as a creative entity. McCartney's incredible command of rhythm lies at the forefront of the mix, complimented by a group that is able to seamlessly transport between post-punk, acid guitar jangle, and krautish experimentalism. There's even a stellar dub track on here. As much as contemporary artists tend to flaunt their affinity for the past - it's entirely worthless to apply such trappings to the Drin. Amazing debut LP from Cincinnati band, The Drin. Nihilistic post punk album in the style of Joy Division. Highly recommended! Originally on tape. "It begins with a rustle of noise, equally reminiscent of distorted factory noise and a cassette recording of cathedral bells unspooling, before a near-robotic beat and stuttering bassline enter the fray. Initially, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled across the lost tapes of Joy Division’s early Warsaw incarnation, but the atonal blast of strafing guitars fading in and out soon make you realise this is a very different proposition. This is The Drin, and ‘Engines Sing for the Pale Moon’ is their debut album. It’s also one of the best things you’ll hear all year. Helmed by Dylan McCartney, drummer of the rock band Vacation, The Drin originally released this album as a hyper-limited cassette via Future Shock. It’s as much of a departure from McCartney’s usual output as it is for Drunken Sailor Records; songs don’t so much explode out of the gate as drift towards you like a creeping fog that turns your skin inside-out and leaves you sloshing organs all across the carpet. Second track ‘Guillotine Blade’ shows the pieces all coming together, a dubbed-out riot of claustrophobic noise that feels like Pere Ubu trapped in a cupboard one minute, and ‘Warm Jets’-era Eno trying on Bauhaus’ trenchcoats the next. Meanwhile, ‘Down Her Cheek A Party Tear’ unfolds across jittering, skittering rustles of drums and an undulating bassline, making you wonder why post-millennial post-punk so often settles for dickheads shouting non-sequiturs over landfill indie, when it could be entering these dark, unsettling territories instead. The band was announced as the best acoustic punk band of Solihul, in the past, and they are the 1st band of the indie legend, and our dearest friend Rocker (Steph Wood). They are active, on part time basis since 1977. We are really proud for this release, and it is the best way to close the year! So said the publicity at the time of its release, this despite these four girls being, “Every mother’s nightmare, every school boy’s dream,” according to Spin magazine. Spin also reckoned they were, “The coolest band in America,” whereas Kerrang! magazine recognized their “Grimy, glorious rock ‘n’ roll… dripping star power and packing irresistible pop-rock.” • Vocalist Brett Anderson, guitarist Allison Robertson, bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano formed The Donnas in May 1993, adopting the respective stage names Donna A, Donna R, Donna F and Donna C, putting out their first, independently released album in 1997. Taking inspiration from the punky pop rock of the Ramones and The Runaways, mixed with the classic rock of Bachman-Turner Overdrive and KISS, by 2002, they had come to the attention of Atlantic Records, who proclaimed, “The Donnas spit out idiosyncratic pop-punk anthems of rock ‘n’ roll fantasy and teenage kicks with plenty of goofy putdowns and tough-attitude posturing, largely fuelled by their life on the road.” And if you were in any doubt, they were, “Inspired by AC/DC, the Sex Pistols and Madonna, Donna A’s lipstick-snarl vocals pummel Donna C’s and Donna F’s furious chug and Donna R’s early Guns ‘n’ Roses guitar wall.” • 2002’s “Spend The Night”, the first of two albums released by Atlantic, saw the band appear on mainstream US TV shows, such as David Letterman and Jay Leno, whilst taking a mainstage slot on 2004’s Lollapalooza tour. Their three-chord punk songs have an innocent sound that is upended, as most of their lyrics consist of tales of teenage rebellion ("I Don't Wanna Go" and "Get Rid of That Girl") and drug use ("Huff All Night," "Everybody's Smoking Cheeba," and "Friday Fun"). What makes this slight record so much fun is the tempo of the music, the lo-fidelity recording, and high-school cheerleader backing vocals that give the songs a "rah-rah" excitement." ON'T BBC 80-82 is a collection of BBC recordings that was released earlier this year on a very limited CD issued by the band's Society Records. THE DANSE SOCIETY was born in Barnsley, UK in 1980 and is celebrating its 40 th birthday this year with a new album and this compilation of early days recordings which show the great potential of a band which will become an essential act of the Gothic Rock movement. This compilation features twelve songs taken from two BBC PEEL sessions, the frst was recorded in 1981 and the second one in 1982. Two other songs are from an appearance on BBC2 programme 'Riverside'. And last but not least, it features the earliest recording of the band, then called 'Danse Crazy' on the Futurama 2 festival High quality vinyl repress housed in black inner sleeve, thick outer sleeve and including insert sheet with band pictures. Through 1980 the Damned spent some 1078 hours in the studio recording / mixing and this 25th anniversary edition of THE BLACK ALBUM contains all of the released material during that year plus one previously unissued mix. The Black Album was the band’s rural album and their most psychedelic. Initially there were sessions in February and March at Wessex where MGE had been cut. Captain had come up with Rabid (Over You) as a contender for the next single and though a cracking good song and certainly commercial enough, the title was a non starter as far as mainstream radio play was concerned at the time. As Smash It Up had been regarded as an incitement to riot by Radio Wonderful lord knows what they would have made of Rabid. So a cover version was picked in the shape of the Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit and this was cut at the Wessex sessions along with Rabid (Over You). Anthony More was initially in charge of the Rabid session and brought along his synth box of tricks. However he didn’t quite manage to make it to the end of the session, though eventually contributed a lot to the record’s sound. Meanwhile I was cutting Rabbit and Rat was working on a very out there version of the 50s classic Chantilly Lace that was to come out under the moniker Edgar Tempest and the Wild Rockers. All three of these sides were finished and a single was scheduled with White Rabbit backed with’ Rabid (Over You) and the elegiac into mayhem guitar piece from the Captain called Seagulls. It got as far as test pressing stage at EMI and then the band went off it, though it did see the light of day in France and Germany, making its way into the U.K. on import. Chantilly Lace didn’t make it to the starting block. So, single-less, time was booked at Rockfield for May /June to record the bulk of the Black Album. Early takes of History of the World Part 1 and Curtain Call had been cut at Wessex and even a basic acoustic track for Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde. (Ace – WIK2 334/2016)
