• Death comes a-knockin' again! Two later phases set the stage for a third rip through the archives: 1980's "North St." finds the band still uncoiling dense knots of rage. 1992's "We're Gonna Make It" was a final reunion of the brothers and a sweet release of any bitterness, affirming hope for their afterlife. "North St." cover artwork by James Magnant. A-side recorded 1979 (originally released in 1981 under the The 4th Movement name on the North Street / Restlessness single). B-side recorded 1992. SUNN O))) | kannon | CD

    7.00 incl. tax
Kannon is an album which was composed in the aftershadow of SUNN O)))’s most recent successes in immersive collaboration (the group worked with Scott Walker on Soused, Ulver on Terrestrials in 2013 and 2014) and also from the broad and influential wake of their epitimous Monolith’s & Dimensions . Kannon emerged both independently as a conceptual entity and with roots in the legacies of those projects, yet was fully realised years later, in 2015. The album is 36 minutes in length and consists of three pieces of a triadic whole : Kannon 1, 2 and 3. The album celebrates many SUNN O))) traditions ; Kannon was recorded and mixed with SUNN O)))’s close colleague and coproducer Randall Dunn in Seattle, in Studio Litho, Aleph and Avast! ; and the LP includes performances by long term allies and collaborators Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi, Rex Ritter, Steve Moore and others. And at the core the composition centers around the dynamic and intense guitar and bass interplay of SUNN O)))’s founders : Stephen O’Malley & Greg Anderson. It’s possibly the most figurative album SUNN O))) has created, which is unusual as they usually dwell in layers of abstraction and subjectivity. On the other hand the album is the most outright “metal” in years, drawing personal associations and memories of cherished albums like Panzerfaust and Twilight of the Gods again to the forefront of consciousness. At the third time it is very close to the cyclical character of mantra which the band has evolved into as a living creature, the enormity of intense sensate detail and manifestation of the live in concert face of SUNN O))), the organism that has flourished, metamorphosed and transcended tremendously over the past ten years. The literal representation of Kannon is as an aspect of Buddha : specifically “goddess of mercy” or “Perceiving the Sounds (or Cries) of the World”. She is also sometimes commonly known as the Guanyin Bodhisattva (Chinese: 觀音菩薩) amongst a plurality of other forms. There is a rich lineage behind this idea tracing back through many asian belief systems, with as many names and cultural personifications of the idea . SUNN O))) commissioned critical theorist Aliza Shvartz to write a text / liner notes around these ideas and topics. She also explores the relations and perceptions to their approach to these ideas via the metonym of music and SUNN O)))’s place/approach within the framework of music and metal overall. SUNN O))) also commissioned Swiss designer/artist Angela LaFont Bollinger to create the cover artwork, an abstracted sculpture of vision of Kannon, and the French photographer Estelle Hanania to capture portraits of the core trio (Csihar, Anderson, O’Malley) in the impressive and obscurant Emanuel Vingeland mausoleum in Oslo. The LP is packaged in immaculate tip on gatefold sleeve by our long time comrades Stoughton Printing, and pressed at Cascade in Portland, Oregon. CD, download and coloured vinyl versions are also available. – Stephen O’Malley & Greg Anderson / SUNN O))), 11 September 2015 Label: Southern Lord Records

Our first release with new singer Arnold De Boer and the first 7" release on Ex Records in 20 years. The title "Our Leaky Homes" comes from the title of a chapter of a book called "HEAT (How To Stop The Planet From Burning)" by English journalist George Monbiot. The main riff of "Maybe I Was The Pilot" is adapted from a song called "Elosi Aberu Akipore Imaniti Abiro" by Ugandan singer and adedeu (harp) player Iganitiyo Ekacholi. It appears on the CD "Secular Music from Uganda" (SWP Records 024), part of a series of re-releases of Hugh Tracey's recordings from Eastern and Southern Africa from the early 50s. Label: EX Records

The first vinyl offering from Toronto's BURNING LOVE featuring Chris Colohan (CURSED, LEFT FOR DEAD, RUINATION) on vocals. Originally released as a limited cassette demo in 2009, now available on vinyl. Definitely more punk than CURSED but still rooted stoner / doomy metal hardcore. 4 originals and one cover. 2nd 7" and LP coming out soonish on DERANGED and a full USA and Canadian tour later this year. Review from EXCLAIM "While the name may deceive, there's no love ― just burning ― on this Toronto, ON-based quintet's energetic and completely grimy debut recording. Comprised of six tracks blasted out in ten minutes, the garage-based endeavour is shockingly debaucherous and unkempt. Essentially comprised of former Cursed vocalist Chris Colohan and Hamilton doom-y hardcore outfit Vatican Chainsaw Massacre, this sinister collaboration spawns a dirtier punk'n'roll-based hardcore outfit than one would anticipate. Their drive elicits comparisons to Disfear, Holland's the Spades, back in their Learnin' The Hard Way era, and of course, Colohan's deep-rooted adoration for Winnipeg, MB's dearly departed Kittens, offering an element of downbeat-heavy tracks bathed in primal angst. Keenly restrained enough to be melodic but still abrasive and loud, Burning Love offer up what's best described as the pelvis-driven distillation of their feeder bands. And that is great but pretty frustrating when such an awesomely primitive, rudimentary style can be so inspiring and brusque yet ephemeral." Originally released in 2009 as a demo tape. • When the sun sets over Barcelona’s historic streets, you can almost hear the melodies of Minor Planets, a band imbued with a unique blend of Get Up Kids-inspired melodic rock and an underlying punk ethos. They’ve emerged as a celestial body in the alt-rock universe, their music painting in all the shades of life’s highs and lows. This autumn, the band will release their maiden CDEP, ‘Neverending Days,’ a portfolio of six tracks that explore a range of human experiences and societal intricacies. These are not just songs; they’re anthems for anyone navigating the labyrinthine landscapes of modern life. Released via Engineer Records and Deal With Hate Records, the EP delves into themes as diverse as personal loss, labour exploitation, the unchecked whims of capitalism, and the aging process. Equally compelling is its commentary on the paradox of alternative music scenes, which can metamorphose from platforms of inclusivity into elitist enclaves. Produced in the prolific setting of El Turonet studio under the guidance of Claudi Arimany, and mastered by Mario Patiño at La Atlantida Studio, ‘Neverending Days’ is a reflection of the members’ nearly two-decade long journey through the punk and hardcore terrains of Barcelona. Neverending Days CD tracklist: 1. The Distance 2. Sunsets & Sunrises 3. Santa Carla 4. Bakery Chain 5. Outsiders 6. Caper. Label: Engineer Records

  • KYLESA | ultraviolet | CD

KYLESA have returned as challenging and daring as ever on their 6th full length, 'Ultraviolet!' Moving well beyond their trademark riffs, 'Ultraviolet' sees core founding members, Laura Pleasants and Phillip Cope, expanding and evolving. The dualism of Pleasants' versatile singing and Cope's shouted vocals melds perfectly with the constant change in sound. Shifting effortlessly from heavy hard rock riffs to punk-infused beats to even barren cold wave concoctions, 'Ultraviolet' sees KYLESA progressing in ways never thought possible and is undoubtedly one of the best records of 2013! The Savannah, Georgia-based Kylesa are, fundamentally, a metal group, but they are otherwise difficult to categorize: elements of hardcore punk, psychedelic stoner rock, technical speed metal, and good old-fashioned Black Sabbath sludge appear in their music. Also, with a front line consisting of three very different singers instead of a single focal point, Kylesa have a musical variety lacking from many of their more monochromatic peers. Kylesa formed in Savannah in 2001, taking their unusual name from "kilesa mara," what Buddhist teachings term demons of defilement and delusion. Guitarist and singer Phillip Cope and bassist Brian Duke were former members of the Savannah grindcore act Damad, which had released two albums in the '90s; the original lineup was completed with the addition of guitarist and singer Laura Pleasants and drummer Brandon Baltzley. After the release of a single and a split EP with Memento Mori, sessions for Kylesa's debut album were tragically cut short when Duke died during an epileptic seizure. Replacing Duke with bassist and singer Corey Barhorst, the band completed its self-titled debut, released in late 2002. More singles and a placeholder EP, 2004's No Ending 110 Degree Heat Index, followed before Kylesa signed with the indie metal label Prosthetic Records and released their second proper album, To Walk a Middle Course, in 2005. Following the release of that album, Baltzley left the group, replaced by a pair of drummers, Jeff Porter and Carl McGinley. Kylesa's third album, Time Will Fuse Its Worth, was released on Halloween 2006, followed by Static Tensions in 2009. The following year, Kylesa dove even deeper into the psychedelic waters they'd been exploring with Spiral Shadow, which arrived on Season of Mist. The trend continued on their more melodic and expansive sixth album, 2013's Ultraviolet. But Cope and Pleasants never stopped writing. They stockpiled riffs, melodies, and production ideas before embarking on a grueling bout of touring that would last into 2014. When the pair reentered the studio, it was with new drummer Carl McGinley. They delved into their stash for source material. In July of 2015, they announced the imminent release of the album The Exhausting Fire with first single "Lost and Confused." Recorded at the Jam Room in Columbia, South Carolina and produced by Cope, the set compiled and compounded virtually every sound that Kylesa had explored on earlier records as well as some new ones. The Exhausting Fire was issued on October 2. - Stewart Mason, Rovi. Label: Season of Mist Barcode: 0822603127522

  • "Let's go back to rough & dirty punkrock from the UK and a band that didn't make an official album, but four fantastic 7inches. Originally formed as a five-piece band from Wigan in 1979, Barry (vocals), "Psycho" (guitars), Dean (bass), "Bambi" (drums) and Tina (2nd guitar), there were two bands called "The Insane" for a while when the original band split. They were very young at the start, with some of the group having only just left school. The band were rank amateurs, with Tina utilising the one-finger down the neck method made infamous by Crass. The band gigged for a year or so before making their vinyl debut with a track called 'Nuclear War', which appeared on the 1981 compilation Ten From The Madhouse. Read further infos on punkygibbon. The band actually saw fourteen different line-ups in their career and also recorded for Riot City Records. Both David and Simon later became members of Flux Of Pink Indians." https://wdthtc.blogspot.com/2020/11/the-insane-politics-ep-1981.html (Mad Butcher Records)

This is a jewel in the rough! Released back in 1983, this 7″ was one of the milestones of the Italian Punk/HC, let alone one of the best punk records to come out of Rome. The band self produced this 4 song 7″ that contains songs that became band´s trademark in the years to come. No Eroina, Bloody Riot, Naia De Merda and Contro Lo Stato. Tuneful but angry Punk/HC. A must have! Reissued by Anfibio records in 2018. (Anfibio Records)

Classic hardcore/punk crust from 1996. After a few years of silence & tons of lineup changes - not to mention the cancelled tour with Hiatus - Hellkrusher are back. It took them long to do this LP, but it was worth waiting. Their most powerful & best recordings so far. The best comparison are a bastard of Varukers & Discharge with buzzsaw guitars & pounding drums & aggressive shouted vocals! (Sub Culture Distro & Tapes)

  • "This band released a split cassette with No Balls, and this fact is telling. Why? Because Blank Veins play horrible, churning, untoward noise-rock that pays grubby homage to said band and the related Brainbombs. First song is a rattling, skull-scraping thing overloaded with squalling sax. The beat to it is almost like the Gun Club or something, though the instrumentation suggests broken glass and corrugated iron rather than Jeffrey Lee Pierce’s spidery guitar fragments. Second song is a stuck lurch, the same riff cycling over and over while beleaguered vocals howl misfortune and that infernal sax parps mercilessly away. It’s brain-gnawingly awful and borderline unbearable, but at the same time strangely compulsive. How they manage such a combination is a total mystery, but do it they do. Over and over and over again." 137 copies pressed in total. 95 came with black letter stamps on the label for the tracklist, and 42 came with red letter stamps. This is the second edition.
