Encyclopaedia of 1980-1989 Pop-Punk including interviews and insights. Featuring over 900 bands. Foreword by Mike Gitter XXX zine. ‘We Can Be The New Wind’ captures the era when bands throughout the world were blending more melodic and experimental styles whilst heading in an alternative rock direction for hardcore punk. It is the early encyclopaedia of powerful pop-punk. Including in-depth profiles of both the bigger names and more underground players that helped push this new sound forward and interviews with over 150 bands, such as 7 Seconds, Husker Du, Dream Syndicate, Hard-Ons, Camper Van Beethoven, The Plimsouls and To Damascus. More than 900 bands from all over the world, active from 1980 to 1989, get an interesting and insightful mention. Cover artwork by Brian Walsby. The hardcore punk scene had two major crossovers, one with heavy metal and one with pop influenced independent rock. A significant number of early hardcore punk bands incorporated more melodic, challenging and experimental elements in their music while retaining their punk backbone and by doing so, they went on to create something new. This book focuses on the crossover of Punk, Hardcore Punk, Garage Revival and Power Pop with the Alternative Rock scene and reports on many of the main bands in the genre. This book's structure is organised according to country, and then regionally. The USA obviously has the lion's share, since it was source of this new sounds melting pot, but the UK is also present as is the rest of the world. More than 160 bands were interviewed and even more reviewed, resulting in a total of more than 1000 bands. Flyers and pictures were obtained with permission from the bands, and many of them that have never seen the light of day. Until now. The first band interviewed was 7 Seconds, so put New Wind on and turn it up, because it's time to begin the journey... Bands covered include 7 Seconds, Uniform Choice, Agent Orange, All, Down By Law, Big Drill Car, The Dickies, Chemical People, Government Issue, Rites of Spring, Dinosaur Jr, Embrace, Gray Matter, Dag Nasty, Moving Targets, Supertouch, Goo Goo Dolls, Shudder to Think, Husker Du, Jones Very, Pegboy, Superchunk, The Doughboys, HDQ, Sink, Mega City Four, The Hard Ons, Life... But How To Live It? and many more. “Anesiadis writes from a place of love and respect and has interviewed many of the band members for this book. There are some great facts that even the most seasoned of journalists will discover they didn’t know.” -John Deaux, All About The Rock Format Paperback | 842 pages Dimensions 155.96 x 233.93 x 42.42mm | 1,200 gr Publication date 04 Feb 2022 Publisher Earth Island Books Language English Alexandros Anesiadis is a massive fan of hardcore punk and metal, but his interests aren’t solely limited within those musical styles. Having already written 'Crossover the Edge: Where Hardcore, Punk And Metal Collide', Anesiadis has set the bar pretty high in terms of musical research, managing to explore even the most unknown bands alongside all the big names of the genre. Born in 1981 in Thessaloniki, Greece he describes himself as a ‘manic record collector’, always trying to get his hands onto releases by bands that no-one has a clue about. Anesiadis is selling his soul to acquire all the Wipers, Discharge, D.R.I. and Naked Raygun records, and loves going to small-club gigs, travelling the world and attempting to make his daughter and wife happy!

  • Last year 2021 Wasted celebrated their 25th anniversary and played their earliest songs to sold out crowds in Finland. One of Finland’s best known and most iconic punk rock bands has toured all corners of Europe and seen Finland in and out. Formed in Joensuu, Finland in 1996, the band is nowadays spread over Helsinki-Tampere-Berlin. The previous album “Here Comes The Darkness” (2013) and mini album “The Truth Will Not Be Televised” (2016) were really well received and the band continued to pull crowds and had people wanting to hear more new songs rather than old ones – the best feedback a 25 year old band can wish for. Now Wasted is back with a new album, arguably stronger than ever. The upcoming 10 song album will be out on LP/CD/TAPE/DIGITAL on April 8th on Sabotage records and Combat Rock Industry. Some songs continue on the same path than its predecessors, some are introducing darker postpunk and 80s melodic hardcore influences but yet creating an original sound that can be only described as Wasted. Full of energy, pissed off, sincere, in your face and raw. The lyrics are as political and straight forward as in the early days. These catchy and energetic songs meet with thought-provoking lyrics about gentrification, war, misogynists, climate change, racism, conspiracy theorists, mental health… The first single “Break You” is a about the mental struggle in the hectic modern society. • There is no doubt Warzone is one of the most crucial and influential bands coming from the New York Hardcore scene. Fronted by the charismatic Ray “Raybeez” Barbieri, Warzone preached vehemently for scene unity and against racism while buzzsaw guitar riffs and wailing solos over speedy drums churned out a soundtrack found at CBGB Sunday Matinees, The Pyramid, The Anthrax and the rest of the legendary clubs of the era. Their landmark debut LP Don’t Forget The Struggle, Don’t Forget The Streets is heralded as one of the most important NYHC records of all time, with its 2016 reissue on Revelation Records selling thousands of copies and filling gaps in record collections all over the world. Two years later, Revelation Records proudly presents the reissue of Warzone’s second LP Open Your Eyes. This oft-overlooked record continues the sound from Don’t Forget The Struggle,... the last purely hardcore record before the band’s more metal third LP. This record featured Jerry Williams behind the board who was previously known for his work with Bad Brains, The Beastie Boys, and Reagan Youth among others, with production help from none other than Dr. Know, guitarist of Bad Brains! • NYC hardcore punks WARTHOG return with what could possibly be their best recorded output yet. It’s been a couple years since their EP’s on Katorga Works and Iron Lung Records were unleashed upon us all and in that time the members of the Hog have perfected their particular formula and have finally delivered four more tracks of pounding hardcore savagery that stands out ten fold from most of the bullshit that fans of the genre are bombarded with on a regular basis. Are you a functioning human in a functioning world? Each record comes in a glue pocket sleeve along with a two colour risograph printed insert. Early Sessions Of The Classic Joy Division Line-Up On 180g Vinyl LP! Warsaw was the planned debut album by the English post-punk band Joy Division, while they were briefly associated with RCA Records. Recorded in May 1978, it comprised eleven tracks now known collectively as the "RCA Sessions". However, the band were disappointed with the label's post-production work and the deal fell through, the album being scrapped. Four of the songs recorded during the RCA sessions had previously been recorded at the end of 1977, and it was these older recordings that the band would release the following month as their debut An Ideal for Living EP. The RCA sessions circulated on bootlegs for years, generally bearing the Warsaw title, until the tracks were licensed for a commercial release in 1994, appearing alongside "As You Said" from the 1980 "Komakino" single, as well as the band's first recorded music, the five "Warsaw Demo" tracks from 1977, which were noted on the sleeve as "bonus tracks". "What was planned to be Joy Division's first LP (unreleased until 1994, except in bootleg form) sounds like an album from the punk era -- raw and edgy, undisciplined but tuneful, unlike the group's proper debut, Unknown Pleasures. All of the tracks were later seen in different form, but Warsaw still manages to captivate through its pure energy." - AllMusic

  • WARHEAD come from the former capital of the Empire, Kyoto, and there's no doubt they're among the top classic hard core bands from the Land of the Rising Sun. Insane Society now releases the most important of their 1991-2004 work on one LP wrapped in a cover by well-known japcore artist Sugi - 22 songs from their out-of-print and hard-to-find 7", split and compillation releases, boasting remastered sound (as heard on a CD previously released by Blood Sucker Records). The first song, "Cry of the Truth", is a solid punch in the face right off and this maelstrom of the most frantic hardcorepunk won't let you go until the needle has come to the last groove of the record. Maniac vocals mixed with massive sung-along refrains, guitars in the red, roaring bass, rabid drumming and cymbals sounding like a whiplash - all this makes for an incredibly loud and energetic mix, supported by lyrics full of defiance and desire to never conform and to never give up! • Warcry is a Portland Oregon based D-beat band featuring Todd of Tragedy and His Hero Is Gone fame on vocals and Keith from Hellshock, The Estranged, Lebenden Toten and Black Water Records on drums. Savage Machinery is the band's fourth full-length LP, which was just released on the band's own imprint Warcry Records for the U.S. market. For the first time on Agipunk, Warcry's Savage Machinery features ten tracks of vicious and brutal sounding D-BEAT. Those who think of this band as Tragedy's faster, louder, and angrier little brothers (mostly since because they have the same vocalist), are completely wrong, as even with the similar vocal style Warcry sound pretty much nothing like Tragedy. As with all of their other records, the inspiration here is classic d-beat of the type that we generally associate with mid-to-late-80s Scandinavia... if you dig records like Anti-Cimex's "Criminal Trap" 12", Totalitär's "Sin Egan Motstandare", or Nuclear Death Terror's "S/T" LP you'll definitely be able to rage out to this one. Great riffs, totally bruising recording, and all of the top-notch quality you would expect from this camp. These ten songs are flawlessly executed and will definitely appeal to fans of this style of music. Highly recommended! Enjoy! (Agipunk Records)

Their latest LP “Manifest Ruination” will be slated for release in the fall of 2022. Forming in early 2008, War//Plague have been one of the most dedicated and productive crust punk bands for the last decade bringing socio/political rage and ferocity to their music. With 11 releases to date, there is no end in sight for these veteran Minneapolis stalwarts! WAR//PLAGUE will be crossing their 15 year anniversary threshold in 2023 and have an expansive catalog that includes split releases with some legendary bands such as WARWOUND, AXEGRINDER and more. • The new full length album from the awesome punkers War On Women, battering beats, heavy riffs and plenty of classic punk/rock vibes. When they were starting out, Baltimore’s War On Women defined their sound as “Bikini Kill meets early Metallica.” That seems like an untenable combination — raw and impassioned and untrained feminist fire on one side, virtuosic power-fantasy speed-freakery on the other. It’s like a chef saying that her latest dish is ice cream meets chicken korma. It’s not that those two things are opposed. They’re both great, and it’s very easy to love both of them. It’s just hard to imagine them being great together. But on Capture The Flag, their second album, War On Women pull it off. And they make it sound immediate and instinctive, as if those two strains always made sense together. And even more than that, the combination sounds like something that the current cultural moment needs. (Bridge 9 Records) https://waronwomen.bandcamp.com/album/capture-the-flag

  • "The Land of Fire and Ice" has long been known for immense natural beauty, ancient folklore, hakarl, aluminum and hairy little horses. What you may not know is that punks were also there from the very start of the show. One of the most important bands to emerge from the thriving Reykjavík scene was Vonbrigði. Though they draw influence from UK and European post-punk and American hardcore, have no doubts Vonbrigði were 100% their own unique thing. They didn't receive a ton of international attention at the time and sort of faded into history but not without releasing a handful of songs, including a blistering hardcore track on the Rokk Í Reykjavík soundtrack compilation and an incredible EP on the fledgling Gramm label owned by Ásmundur Jónsson and Einar Örn (of Purrkur Pillnikk, Kukl and, more notably, Sugarcubes fame). All of the aforementioned songs are included here along with the rest of the previously (and unbelievably, I mean how is material this amazing not released immediately after recording it? Crazy!) unreleased '82/'83 sessions. 71 minutes of sweat and grit. Who needs volcanoes when you have Vonbrigði's fire? All tracks recorded between July 1982 and January 1983 at Studio Hanagal by Kjartan Kjartansson. Mixed and mastered in 2020 at Klakhöllin by Hallur Ingólfsson. Art by Þórir Georg. Came with a gatefold cover and two printed inner sleeves. • At last its here,,, the Von Gams LP… the first punkband from Vaxjö, did a fantastic 7” record back in 79, that they recorded in Klippan with Pål Spectrum, yes the two songs are on the LP. And 9 more songs. They did also a gret EP on slyngel records some years ago these songs are not here,,, so all I can say this is a very nice record with lots of cool music and sounds from 1979-1981,,, and many hits,, I LOVE it,,, Our take: Don’t be fooled by the graffiti logo on the cover… this isn’t a Cold World side project, but rather some vintage 70s Swedish punk. Von Gam released a two-song single in 1980 (that’ll set you back $200-300 if you’re lucky enough to find one) and a (presumably) even rarer cassette in 1981, and from what I can tell from the not-very-Anglophone-friendly packaging this LP collects the single, a few of the songs from the cassette, and some other assorted tracks. It’s easy to see why the single goes for so much money, because Von Gam play great 70s European punk with a distinctly rock and roll flavor… fans of the Kids, Lost Kids, and Rude Kids (hell, maybe there are even some similar bands out there that don't have the word “kids” in their name!) will eat this up, as will fans of more modern bands in this vein like Finland’s Achtungs or Sweden’s Baddat for Trubbel. Von Gam dabble in some other sounds too… there’s some ska on this LP’s deeper tracks and more mid-paced, Clash-inspired songs, but the best songs here are absolute scorchers that will blow the wig off of anyone who has more than a few plays on their collection of Killed by Death compilations. A1-A2 from the "Hasse Parasit" 7" recorded 13 october 1979 at Studio Bombadill, Klippan A3, A4 & A6 recorded 28 januari 1980 at Radio Kronoberg, Växjö A5, B5 live 8 april 1983 at Lady Jane, Lessebo B1-B4 from the "Ung & Söt" cassette recorded 14-15 mars 1981 at Studio Allton, Liatorp Comes with a insert with the stories behind the songs.
