NYC duo Straw Man Army return with their third LP, “Earthworks”, to complete a trilogy of records begun with 2020’s “Age of Exile,” and 2022’s “SOS”. Whereas “Age of Exile” dealt with the haunted landscapes of colonial history in the Americas, and “SOS” gave voice to a crisis of the present moment, like a prayer in bewildering times, 2024’s “Earthworks” signals the band’s attempt to close this trilogy by turning their gaze towards the future, where paradox, complexity and contradiction spiral in ascendance to an agonizing pitch. While continuing to develop their own style of anarcho-punk, “Earthworks” finds the band pulling once again from jazz and ambient influences, expanded Krautrock rhythms, and post-rock experiments, with a stronger emphasis on melodic vocals and varied song structures than on previous offerings. Taking cues from the wistful anti-war harmonies of The Byrds and the angry melodies of Zounds, tracks like “Turn the Wheel” and “Second Nature” mark new territory for a group whose messages and methods of experimentation have merged to form a singular sound equally at home on All the Madmen Records or in the spiritual legacy of ESP Disk. “Earthworks” is an album that holds and subverts many contradictions—juggling the weight of melancholy, grief, guilt, impunity, and the yearning for clarity against the backdrop of boiling wrath; the wrath of nature, the occupied, the dispossessed, and of the mind against itself. To quote the track “Spiral” — “Is this all that’s left for us these days? / Apathy and rage?”— Straw Man Army offers this record as a companion to our frustration, our sickness, our despair, and a lifeline for our fugitive attention in the struggle for peace. A Book by Chris McDonald about Leatherface and all things that bind them. It’s the end of a millennium and Toronto friends Chris and Jason set out for a revelatory adventure through England, Scotland, and Ireland. With every mile, they edge closer to Sunderland’s Leatherface – the modern era’s most anomalous and influential U.K. punks – while visions of beauty, danger, and dark humour unravel... And before long, they find themselves in the belly of the beast: with the band that changed so many lives. "It might seem odd — a punk band introducing poetry into someone’s life. But what if this lyrical influence was the reason you became a writer in the first place? Days and Days weaves together two stories. One is a tale of friendship and self-discovery that occurs during a backpacking adventure through England, Scotland, and Ireland. The other celebrates the highly influential yet underestimated UK band Leatherface, a group that The Guardian called “the greatest British punk band of the modern era.” Without so much as a single hostel booked, Chris MacDonald and his friend Jason cross the Atlantic. They sleep in train stations, endure a haunting on top of a volcano in Edinburgh, are driven out of Belfast by the IRA, and witness the mother of all storms. They also find themselves in the rehearsal space of their teenage punk idols, a building steeped in cultural significance for the Sunderland music scene. Days and Days is about the silver thread that connects us even after drifting apart. It’s a story about forgiveness and reflection, how beauty can be found within callous cladding. Leatherface band members, colleagues, and friends generously share personal insights that guide the reader into the melancholy, darkness, and humor that surround Sunderland’s best-kept secret." Décima Víctima were a Spanish band that, during their short-lived career between 1981 and 1984, developed a very personal sound reminiscent of Joy Division, The Cure and other British post-punk bands. Despite commercial success evaded them, rarely has any Spanish band achieved such a high degree of quality and coherence in their music and personality. Although included in our past release MR 305 (2010) as part of a limited edition boxset, this is the first time their second album “Un Hombre Solo” (1984) gets an official reissue in its original single LP format. For this edition, the sound of the original tape recordings has been cleaned and improved and the artwork has been slightly modified following the band’s ideas. Décima Víctima were a Spanish band that, during their short-lived career between 1981 and 1984, developed a very personal sound reminiscent of Joy Division, The Cure and other British post-punk bands. Although commercial success evaded them, rarely has any Spanish band achieved such a high degree of quality and coherence in their music and personality. Despite only being active for under three years, Décima Víctima left a long-lasting legacy, and their influence would later be heard in Spanish bands such as Family, Los Planetas and Sr Chinarro. In 1981, brothers Lars and Per Mertanen formed the instrumental band Clausula Tenebrosa. After a show they started talking about the possibility of rehearsing with Carlos, a friend at the time and ex-singer of the recently split Ejecutivos Agresivos. That's how the story of Décima Víctima started, rehearsing with a drum machine in the cellar of the Mertanens' house in Madrid. A few months later they made their first studio recording, a demo recorded on a 4-track. And shortly after, with their friends from the band Esclarecidos, they started the independent label Grabaciones Accidentales (GASA) and were able to start releasing their own records. The first single came out in 1982, with Lars playing drums on it. Soon after, Los Esclarecidos introduced them to Jose Brena and he joined Décima Víctima as drummer. The second single was also recorded in 1982. The studio sessions were no short of joy and experimentation. Paco Trinidad, the producer, understood what the band wanted and managed to achieve it technically. Despite commercial success evaded them, their first LP (1982) was acclaimed by the press, especially by El Pais, one of the biggest-selling newspapers in Spain. A second album would follow two years later. It was called “Un Hombre Solo” (1984) and was released on Grabaciones Accidentales (GASA). Unavailable for years and always in high demand, it now gets an official reissue in its original single LP format. For this edition, the sound of the original tape recordings has been cleaned and improved and the artwork has been slightly modified following the band’s ideas. Drawing from and amplifying upon Rancid"s entire body of work, Indestructible is a testament to the durability of the human spirit, and to the positive power that music can have in our lives. Perhaps their most personal album to date on Indestructible Rancid takes us along on an unforgettable musical journey. Whether retelling true stories from their lives as in the touching "Red Hot Moon", the tragic "Other Side" or the rollicking "Gilman St", or presenting a worldview born of dues paid and tours made in songs like "Start Now", "Against The Wall" and "Ivory Coast", Indestructible is irresistibly tuneful throughout. On this, the groups" sixth disk, styles range from the long awaited return of Rancid"s patented brand of ska on "Red Hot Moon" to the super intense Discharge inspired hardcore strains of "Out Of Control". Like every Rancid CD this one has a few twists and turns and more than enough musical surprises to keep the mix fresh and exciting, but Indestructible also marks a return to the bands roots that will surely have true Rancid fans rejoicing! • Recorded with Bill Stevenson of punk legends The Descendents and Black Flag and with Jason Livermore at the producers’ Blasting Room Studios in Colorado, My Shame Is True pushes the band into new musical terrain while embracing their classic Trio sound. The album contains 40 minutes of passionate punk-filled rock that showcases guitarist/vocalist Matt Skiba, bassist/vocalist Dan Andriano and drummer Derek Grant at their absolute best. "We're very proud of it,” says Matt Skiba. “Once we got in the studio, the songs really took on a shape of their own.” From the album’s first melodic opener “She Lied To The FBI” to the first single, “ I Wanna Be A Warhol” the Trio waste no time setting the tone for their energetic, hook-filled, eighth studio album. For the first time ever on an Alkaline Trio record, My Shame Is True finds a guest appearance from Rise Against’s Tim Mcllarth on rousing punk rock anthem, “I , Pessimist”, while songs like “I’m Only Here to Disappoint” and album closer, “Till Death Do Is Part” remind fans of classic Trio, with stellar song-writing and catchy choruses. The Offspring's metal-inflected punk became a popular sensation in 1994, selling over four million albums on an independent record label. While the group's credentials and approach follow the indie rock tradition of the '80s, sonically they sound more like an edgy, hard-driving heavy metal band, with their precise, pulsing power chords and Dexter Holland's flat vocals. Featuring Holland, guitarist Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman, bassist Greg Kriesel, and drummer Ron Welty, the Offspring released their self-titled debut album in 1989. Four years later, their second album, Ignition, became an underground hit, setting the stage for the across-the-board success of 1994's Smash, which still holds the record as the biggest selling indie release of all time. • “Lightning. Pure, white-hot, hot-streaking, sizzling, punk lightning. It’s punk that people who’ve ‘given up,’ ‘don’t get,’ or ‘moved on’ from punk have the highest percentage of liking. It’s just so obviously scorching, beautiful, and crackling music, regardless of genre. And I was reluctant to admit that lightning could strike twice. One of the driving forces behind RED DONS is DOUG BURNS, the lead singer and guitarist of the untouchable every-member-made-it-greater band, THE OBSERVERS. The Red Dons first LP, Death to Idealism, while it had its bright spots, sounded covered in blankets, a little restricted and restrained, a little awkward, a little tentative. Getting used to new skin. Not so with Fake Meets Failure. The burka’s ripped off, faces are revealed, and those faces are screaming. Analogous to the transformation of the Vicious to Masshysteri or Sexy to Future Virgins, it took a little time from the dusk of one band to the dawn of another, but the newer band, exhibiting similar genetic code to its predecessor, has developed its own personality, its own habits, and has accomplished what many, including myself, didn’t think was possible: release more music that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of their own legacy’s finest work. One of the best punk records of 2010, hands down.”—Todd Taylor (Razorcake) Label: Taken By Surprise Records

STIFF RICHARDS | dig | LP

Wait: is this another face-melting punk act from Australia?! You best believe it! Stiff Richards hail from the Australian South Coast and kick up a racket so forceful and ferocious that you'd swear these guys have been listening to Raw Power since birth. Dig is the group's second album!! There's nothing fancy going on here: just raw, savage rock n' roll that kicks you straight in the teeth and comes back for more. These gentlemen have definitely absorbed the lessons of the Detroit and Aussie rock of yore, and they manage to invigorate that sonic tradition with an energy that's off the charts. You've got guitars firing at full fury, a punishing rhythm section, and a madman howler on lead vocals who probably literally spits fire. "Do It Right Now" may be as blatant of a Stooges homage as you'll ever hear, but it's also one of the best. Play it at max volume, and you will feel indestructible! SLANT are back with 17 minutes of pure bristling rage. • Back in the late 70’s, a small Louisiana town would quietly become home to “The Band That Souled The World”. The Soul Patrol hailed from the northwestern Louisiana town of Many (pronounced man-ny), just across the Toledo Bend Reservoir from Texas. Junior high pals Buckshot Coxe (vocals, guitar) and Kenny Weaver (vocals, bass, percussion) laid the groundwork for The Soul Patrol, later graduating from Many High and crossing state lines to jam in Denton, TX while Buckshot briefly attended college. Upon returning to Many, drummer Kerwin Alexander – and his particularly loose and soulful style – was added to round out the trio, now jamming in their basement space known as THE CAVE. While their live shows at small clubs went over poorly – Weaver recalls, “We were kinda anti-everything in the area and no one got us at the time” – The Soul Patrol made it into a long-since-forgotten local studio to cut a two song demo in 1979. From there, the band decided to order a custom pressing of 50 copies (!) on their own STUD Records imprint. Almost all of the sleeveless 45s were given away to friends and at parties, vanishing into near-total obscurity for over four decades. Oh yes, THAT single – well it’s simply jaw dropping stuff. A double-sided monster that simultaneously kills across the hard rock/proto-punk/Bloodstains/Killed By Death spectrums. Loud, raw, loose, Southern, and WAY ahead of the curve. “Mara” is a bona fide rocker, anchored by Buckshot’s brilliant vocal and guitar lines. But hell, “Take Back the Night” truly steals the show, with an incredible fuzz guitar tone driving the main riff home while Coxe screams “HERE WE GO!” to kick off the side. An incredible punk moment, almost like the cocaine mix of “Raw Power” Stooges bashing into the verse riff of “Sub-mission” by The Sex Pistols. And it’s all totally replete with attitude, excelling in the same department as fellow US first wave punk regionalists like The Crap Detectors, The Gizmos, and The (Iowa) Dogs. The Soul Patrol existed until 1981, turning in a second 45 and LP on the White Horse label – neither of which quite match the veracity and sheer raw excellence of their STUD 45. Shortly after their self-titled LP, Buckshot Coxe moved to Amsterdam and would later pass there, followed in passing by Kerwin Alexander. Reissued and widely available for the first time ever, THE SOUL PATROL’s debut 45 has been carefully transferred and remastered from Kenny Weaver’s personal copy (one of a handful known in existence) and paired up with a newly created picture sleeve by resident Louisiana punk Drew Owen (Sick Thoughts). First 250 copies on translucent orange vinyl with 500 more on black, all with hand-stamped picture sleeves accompanied by an insert featuring liners from Kenny Weaver and a small treasure trove of reproduced ephemera from The Soul Patrol archives, plus a download code. • "A couple years ago my consigliere Mr @jonahjonahfalco played me a track he was working on, and I immediately fell in love with its Pet Shop Boys style electronics tom-toms and their late Blitz general vibe. Down the pub and upon some further discussion I learnt the band was Edmonton’s @arewenothomefront , and as it happened I already knew @noproblempunx We got talking and a few months later ‘Think Of The Lie” 12” came out. I loved it and so did a lot of people it seems. Then the band came and played two fantastic shows @staticshockrecords and I finally met Mr @wegotemboys and the rest of the band which as it happened were the sweetest bunch. By then we have been in touch regularly and I can say, without a doubt, that working with them has been an incredible experience, I want to think we all have learnt a lot from each other and became great friends on the way. Today is the day their second record gets announced and I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It is a very special record, hard to pinpoint but a record which, at least in this house, gets played over and over. I hope you dig it." Paco “Enormous full length debut from Home Front who have managed to fix truth to the beautiful and borderline mythical threadneedle moment in which punk, new wave, pop, indie and rock and roll all descend upon a single source. We may have only dreamed that Tears for Fears might have been going to see GBH at the weekend or that Annie Lennox spent her evening sewing Crass patches to her Wrangler Blue Bell jacket, but Home Front have rang the dinner triangle for us all to feast. High moments of perfectly patinated synth brilliance, tender new wave considerations, punk anthems that could fill the biggest stadium, and fiery hooks that could warm the coldest cynic. The Champagne, the gluebag, the boots, and the eyeliner, GAMES OF POWER clutches to it all. GAMES OF POWER lives inside a crystal clear recording by long time friend and Edmonton wizard Nik Kozub, bringing Home Front’s follow up to “Think of The Lie” to euphoric heights and gritty lows. Produced again by Jonah Falco remotely and between sub zero 10 kilometer runs in Edmonton in late February with co-production by Nik Kozub, Home Front have put their best mirror shined boot forward."
