• Not a lot of bands come from Boise, Idaho, however even if Septic Death were the only band to emerge from there, it should put the city on the map as birthing something great. The band was formed by late 70s/ early 80s California skate regular Brian Pushead Schroeder, who had already made a bit of a name in the underground hardcore/ punk scene not only as a skater, but as an artist. He began sending his art to bands and ‘zines in the early ’80s, and many of them chose to use it. Later he became the main artist for Zorlac Skateboards, designing the artwork for a special edition Metallica skateboard. The band soon used him to design art and t-shirts for them, which propelled him to even larger fame. At this point he has done art for tons of bands both big and small, and his unmistakable gruesome and original artwork and attention to detail was first brought into full bloom in the service of Septic Death. Now That I Have the Attention What Do I Do With It? (which came out in early ’86) is not actually an album proper, but a re-issue of the band’s first 12″ep Need So Much Attention… Acceptance Of Whom mixed with some compilation tracks and some new songs. Side A features 3 tracks from the 12″ep that have added guitars and re-recorded vocals, as well as songs from compilations such as Peace/War, Cleanse The Bacteria, and the Putrid Evil flexi (some re-recorded). Side B features the other 9 songs from the 12″ep in their original versions. Many bands, from Metallica to Integrity have heralded the brilliance of Septic Death (James Hetfield even did vocals on their follow-up 7″ep Burial, and Kirk Hammett played mead guitar on a song on their Kichigai 7″ep). If you like hardcore, thrash, crust, or extreme metal and you haven’t checked this album out, do yourself a favours and listen to it now. Track list: 1. Quit 2. Dream Silent 3. Child 4. Burial 5. Terrorain 6. Thaw (Cold World) 7. Poison Mask 8. Hardware 9. Silence 10. Sweat Of A Nightmare 11. Core Of Reality 12. Negative Threat 13. Never Trust 14. Mental Cancer 15. Fear 16. Advantage 17. • Interzone' is the third full-length album by New York’s electro post-punk duo The Vacant Lots. A genre-blending synthesis of dance and psych, 'Interzone' is made for secluded listeners and all-night partygoers, meant for headphones and the club. Uninhibited by the limitations of two people and continuing their mission of “minimal means maximum effect,” The Vacant Lots’ Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen create an industrial amalgam of icy electronics and cold beats with detached vocals and hard-hitting guitars. 'Interzone's trance-like opener ‘Endless Rain’ and the kinetic Krautrock stomper ‘Into The Depths’ are followed by scintillating dark disco anthems 'Rescue' and 'Exit’. Side 2 kicks off with 80’s synth-pop track ‘Fracture’ and haunting after-hours minimal wave ‘Payoff,’ while ‘Station’ and album closer 'Party's Over' deal with disillusionment and conquering one’s indifference to make real change. The album creates order from chaos and delves into escapism, isolation, relationship conflicts, and decay. With nods to William S. Burroughs and Joy Division’s song of the same name, “Interzone is like existing between two zones,” Jared says. “Interzone doesn't mean one thing. It can mean different things to different people depending on their interpretation. Working on this album was a constant struggle reconciling internal conflicts with all that’s going on externally in the world. Interzone, in one word, is duality." On Interzone, the band produced the 8 songs, 30 minutes record and teamed up with long term collaborators Ivan Liechti who designed the album artwork, and Ted Young who engineered the record. Maurizio Baggio mixed the record and contributed additional production and it was mastered by Gianni Peri. The Vacant Lots have released singles with Mexican Summer and Reverberation Appreciation Society, collaborated on their debut album 'Departure' with Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, their second album 'Endless Night' with Alan Vega, and most recently on their two EPs, 'Berlin' and 'Exit', with Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe at his studio in Berlin. The group has toured with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Suicide, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Growlers, Dean Wareham, The Dandy Warhols, and Spectrum. (Fuzz Club Records – FC 132)

By 2016 a teenage Drew Owen had put himself on everyone's radar releasing a whopping 19 records (and that was just under the Sick Thought moniker) on pretty much every punk label that mattered over a span of three years. At the time I thought of him as a teenage novelty, an endearing sometimes pesky younger punk sibling who I kept telling "NO YOU PUT OUT WAY TOO MUCH STUFF." However in 2016 Drew sent me what became the "18 & Free" single and had me eating my words, eagerly releasing a single for the kid I kept telling never. Now its 2022 and SICK THOUGHTS are back on TOTAL PUNK with a brand new LP. Drew has proven himself far more than a novelty and here I am eagerly footing the bill again. The shitty attitude is still intact and the songs are still about breaking stuff but the ramshackle production and rough edged tunes of early Sick Thoughts are gone. 13 scorching riff heavy tracks that run the gambit from Stiv fueled Power Pop to ‘Cherie Love Affair’ style Sleaze Rock all masterfully recorded by Drew and Michael Hohan with Drew playing all the instruments. Great music for licking knives or lighting your wallet on fire. Nasty, catchy as fuck, and 100% TOTAL PUNK!!! (Total Punk Records)

Rage fueled powerviolence/harDCore from the “ City of Magnificent Distances”. Since their 2018 inception, Brain Tourniquet has payed homage to the classic West Coast Power Violence legends like Man Is The Bastard, Crossed Out and Neanderthal while maintaining their own identity and consistently twisting the conventions of the genre to make something new and urgent and fucking skull crushing. ‘…An Expression In Pain’ takes that forward trajectory 10 steps further and absolutely decimates expectations. This band is truly a light in the darkness. (Iron Lung Records)
  • Barcelona's CIUDAD LINEAL finally deliver the follow up to their fantastic demo from 2013. A full length album of dark minimal wave heavily influenced by EL AVIADOR DRO Y SUS OBREROS ESPECIALIZADOS, THE NORMAL or CABARET VOLTAIRE. Armed with a bass guitar, drum pad, a keyboard and two synths CIUDAD LINEAL manage to create a conceptual piece around the idea of progress and industry as opposing forces. El Nuevo Hombre is divided into two parts each one comprising one side of the album. The A side being "The Splendor" and the B side "The Fall" joined by a speech symbolizing Mankind's awakening. The album throws shades of JOY DIVISION, DECIMA VICTIMA or even THE RESIDENTS leaving behind absolute hits like the freezing cold opening track "Horizonte" or "Industria" which to these ears is the closest anyone has ever came to being part of the LOS INICIADOS/FRACCION DEL EJERCITO ROJO/ AVIADOR family. While CIUDAD LINEAL'S sound is certainly rooted in the early 80's synth explosion the band remains fresh due to their lyrical approach as well as their DIY ethos. The LP was recorded at La Cova De la Bestia by Daniel Muerte and comes housed in a beautifully put together sleeve and insert designed by the band and printed on heavy 350 gsm reverse board. 19 track round up of demos from The Partisans who formed in Bridgend, South Wales in 1978 and ended up being one of the cream of the UK82 punk movement. The first side of the LP has 10 tracks recorded in April 1980 in one day and like bands in their early years - it features mainly covers. It includes songs from the Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, UK Subs, Buzzcocks, UK Subs, Cockney Rejects and yes even more UK Subs. It also has primitive and raw versions of future Partisans classics No Time and I Don’t Give a Fuck. This demo has never been heard or released in any form. Less than a year later, February 1981 with Savage leaving and Louise joining on bass, the band have their most well know line up and are in full flow with a 6 track demo that was sent to No Future Records. It’s not surprising the label snapped them up straight away as the recordings are high energy and full of anthemic gems. The label released Police Story and Killing Machine as the debut 7” direct from these recordings. The other four tracks from this demo have never been released on vinyl. The last three tracks on the LP are the demos from 1982 recorded for No Future for the 17 Years of Hell Single. Rawer and more punk than the actual well know versions. All members of the bands helped in this release and shared original masters from which everything was remastered plus archive from their own personal collections including photos galore, handouts, ticket stubs, interviews etc which are included in the 28 Page Booklet. It’s going off and The Chisel are back to cause a bit of bovver. Following a trio of explosive singles, the band finally bring us their debut full-length album, Retaliation, on the London-based punk institution La Vida Es Un Mus. Having formed in early 2020 and featuring a crew of members with long-term associations to the London punk scene, The Chisel quickly secured a reputation as one of the most exciting bands from a pool of contemporaries that includes Chubby & The Gang, Stingray and Big Cheese. Their sound is rooted firmly in Punk but with influences that run across the board to create a distinctive blend of Oi!, anarcho, UK-82 and hardcore. Retaliation is an unmistakably British record that draws a line from 1982 up to the present day, pushing its way into your collection and torching your stereo. Opening with the agitated force of ‘Unlawful Execution’, the tone is firmly set by a song that addresses the brutality of the Met Police (“Tell me what’s the difference between right or wrong / When a copper gets to blast a lad who did nothing wrong”). ‘Come See Me’ is a ferocious ode to camaraderie in the face of mouthy boneheads and bellends. ‘Shit Life Syndrome’ is a poisoned reference to the same cynical phrase used by physicians to describe the effects of people living under poverty and in the grips of substance abuse (“How can you expect people to act nicely, they’ve all been left on the edge of society”). It’s one of many songs influenced by singer Cal’s experiences of growing up in the working-class town of Blackpool. Cal states: “Blackpool as a town is often overlooked or even looked down upon, I wanted to write lyrics which gave the people of my town a voice”. With tunes like these The Chisel show that they’ll never pull any punches. However, beyond the fury and the swagger there’s another side that plays to an additional strength; the ability to write a memorable hook. Songs like ‘Retaliation’, ‘Tooth & Nail’ and ‘Not The Only One’ could be described as modern day anthems (the latter has become a fan favourite since the arrival of their first live shows) and cement their identity as a band not to be defined by their influences. Retaliation is 14 tracks of dance floor-stomping-working class Chisel-music. Here and now, The Year of The Chisel. (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)

Compiling all E.P.'s by Bootlicker, "Lick The Boot, Lose Your Teeth" presents 24 tracks originally released over four 7"s dating back to 2017. From the earliest incarnation of the band and the start of their signature production and sound to where they are now. With the overblown martial drumming, completely pinned clean guitar attack, Bootlicker has been a fresh take on D-Beat tradition with a handful of Oi/UK82 and American Hardcore influence on the side. Each 7" is compiled here and represents a different phase of the band. The completely broken speaker aggression of "Who Do You Serve", the slight Rock 'n' Roll influenced "Nuclear Family" and bare bones approach of the "Six Track E.P." all paved the way to a more realized sound in "How To Live Life". Instead of tracking down each out of print, individual E.P. Here they are for the taking. (Static Shock Records)

It's 2021 and Vancouver’s Bootlicker are back with their first full length. Experimenting with various lineups and sounds since 2017, these 14 original tracks flesh out their most realized expression. Following four EP’s and two demos, their self-titled debut stays true to the noise cultivated in the previous offerings. That raw, blown-out production countered with clean guitar sound and Internationally-informed take on a UK82 delivery remains. Everything that made the band what they were on their previous output is polished into a ball of fire that will not be contained. Their mid-tempo, menacing posture of tracks like "Herd The Sheep" and "State Of Fever" give way to the D-beat totality of "Master" or "Two Faced" proving there are still ideas in the tank. There won’t be much left but scorched earth by the time it comes to rest. FFO: Mau Maus, Discharge, SSD. Every copy of this LP comes with a 16 page zine-style lyric insert full of illustrations by band member and visual artist Athena. (Static Shock Records)

Collection neatly compiles RIXE's first 3 Eps on one album. All 12 cuts have been remastered for maximum volume. Rixe appeared from nowhere and went from strength to strength over the two years since the Debut EP Coup Et Blessures was released in February 2015. The EP was their calling card and harked back to the glory years of Bologna's finest Nabat mixed with the classic 80's French Oi! sound. It was instant and loved by all and went on to have six pressings. A year later came Les Nerf A Vif - another four tracker with extra bite and bile. Every track was perfectly recorded and produced. Lean with snarl and each track a nugget of anthemic Oi!. On third EP Bapteme Du Feu there was no let up in quality...  more. (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)

Johnny Notebook is back. In tow the 28th Century Mates. Having emerged from the remnants of the bands Dean Dirg, Toyotas, Metric Eyes and Tetallica, the synth-punk duo Johnny Notebook, rooted in Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Madrid, releases all their pent-up energy onto society after almost three years. The result is the energetic, driving sound of the new long player Johnny Notebook and the 28th Century Mates. It is played with the proven mixture of the danceable beats of the Roland TR505 drum composer, the catchy cadences of the PolyKorg800 synthesizer, recurring hooklines and a ruthlessly nasal, but no less melodious voice. Influences from genre gods like Devo, Screamers and Aviador Dro are still the unmistakable foundation of Johnny Notebook. 28th Century Mates is also enriched by repeated Italo-Disco elements, for example in the form of overlaying synthesizer melodies through to shorter keyboard solos, which makes the sound a bit more positive and light-lived than on previous Johnny Notebook releases. Lyrically, many of the songs address the sometimes absurd interactions between digital and analog reality and oscillate between nostalgia, sarcasm and fatalism, without sounding even remotely melancholy (Sound of Subterrania)

Held together by an intense focus on raw emotion and haunting atmospherics, Ragana shifts seamlessly from tender, mesmerizing vocal harmonies to piercing, heart-ripping shrieks and back again. Following up on two immensely popular full-length cassettes, Wash Away represents a major leap forward for the band, their first vinyl release complemented by the massive production of GREG WILKINSON (Brainoil, Noothgrush, Vastum) and mastering by JAMES PLOTKIN (Khanate).? • Who would’ve thought? A new BANNLYST release in 2023! Two and a quarter unheard songs from 1985, the lost final songs of the band. Recorded before members moved away from Molde and one by one ended up in Oslo and started other great bands. The tape with these recordings was found when a band member moved house some years ago, and now finally put out on vinyl. Totally classic Norwegian Hardcore Punk. Released in cooperation with Cease Fire!, the label that brought you the crazy awesome MOLDE PUNX 2xLP reissue. The songs here are: Bare En Slave (1985), Mørk Tid (1985), Hvit Natt Intro Outro (1985), Terrorstyre (1985), 40000 Døde Barn (live, 1992). The EP comes with a big fold-out lyric sheet, international copies have English lyric translations. Just like La Dem Ikke Lure Deg in 1985. (Norwegian Leather Records)

Finally re issued, classic 1980's Norwegian hardcore. At a time when most American bands were going metal, this band turned hardcore inwards for a heavier and darker sound that has been a big influence on crust and especially Norwegian hardcore since. Songs are tight, powerful and you can tell these guys were really top players, so controlled and precise, but raging. The LP of the Oslo band originally came out in 1987 on X-Port Plater. The re-release looks like the original but the front cover is black and white as the original artwork was colored afterwards. The lyric sheet is exactly like the original. (Norwegian Leather Records)

After various horrible bootlegs, here is the official version: The “Diskografi” LP has their songs from the split tape with ANGOR WAT (Knall Tapes, 1984), their 7″ songs (1985), “Terrorstyre” (from the “Nå Eller Aldri” 7″ compilation) and “Louie Louie” from an early demo tape recording. A total of 24 songs in 44 minutes with some of the best 1980s hardcore punk that ever came out of Europe. Some folks say that their EP from the heyday of the mighty X-PORT PLATER label is the best Norwegian punk record ever. Everything on this LP has been carefully remastered from the original cassette tapes and vinyl as all master tapes were lost back in the 80s. (Norwegian Leather Records)

Kriegshög is a raw hardcore/d-beat punk band from Tokyo, Japan. This 7" EP was released in 2008 by Hardcore Survives. "Re-release of their debut EP with new artwork and one extra song. One of the most amazing bands in recent times and one of the hottest new bands from Japan at the moment. The original sold out instantly in February 2008. Here is what MRR hat to say about the original version: I am almost left speechless on how fucking good this record is. the ultra-hardcore brutal legion needs to maim and murder to get this record ‘cuz it fucking kills an I heard it is already long gone. ok, what does it sound like, you may ask? driving, fist-pumping hardcore with loads of distortion, ferocious drumming, and vocals that drive right through my skull. side one paints a picture for you by having some war-time sample – ya know, gunfire and commotion followed by a sic-year-old girl’s blood-curdling scream – then in comes the audio assault. killer!” – (Martin Sorrondeguy, Maximum Rocknroll No. 300). The wolves are back in town -- yeah! This is their best release to date. Better vocals, better songs, better sound than before. This record is a step up from their already amazing LP of last year. This ep brings four new songs that are somewhat influenced by japanese hardcore but BURIAL have found a style of their own that is just totally driving, extremely powerful hardcore punk. Simple as that. It would be great if japan these days had more bands as good as BURIAL. To top it off, japanese punk artist sugi did the front cover artwork. • "If you’re looking for some awesome music from France, Secteur Pavé will sweep you right away with their debut self-titled record. Their anthemic, Oi!-influenced punk-rock is filled with upbeat, cheerful melodies that will make you feel like winning Tour de France. The band’s name refers to the cobbled sectors during cycling events, most notably the legendary Paris–Brest–Paris endurance race where the last fourteen kilometers into Paris were covered in “pavé” (cobblestones). Brimming with catchy riffs and pumped up with boundless enthusiasm, the eight songs on here deal with Secteur Pavé’s hometown of Brest and the square of Guérin where they spend much of their time. They also have this song about Tour de France, as you’ve already guessed, where they sing “France stinks!” It’s also worth mentioning that Secteur Pavé share members with Brest’s finest Syndrome 81 and Litovsk, which might make it feel like a side project in a way. Surely, this record does not carry the same blatantly political charge as they do with other bands, but that’s not their goal here. This is some of the catchiest French punk to come out this year." https://diyconspiracy.net/secteur-pave-st/ (Dans Le Vide – vacuum009, Entre Chien Et Loup – ECEL07, Senseless Acts Of Anger – none, No Glory Records – NG37)
