Out of stockAmy Winehouse's debut album represents her world and her soul. It is a collision between 21st century London's urban soundscapes, the great jazz voices of the last century and the emotional experience of a 19 year old jewish girl with a lot to say. Her voice is the sound of Chicago in the 40s in a smoky back room after hours jazz club. (Island Records – 00602517762411)

Funkadelic's self-titled 1969 debut may not be on the same plateau as the group's later, all-encompassing masterpieces ('maggot brain', 'cosmic slop', etc.), but does serve as the strong foundation upon which their early 70's masterworks were built. Along with Jimi Hendrix's band, Funkadelic is one of the first units to inject funk with hard rock. whereas funk pioneer James Brown concentrates on creating air-tight, precise grooves, Funkadelic keeps things loose, raw, and groovy. Drug experimentation also plays a prominent role in the band's early work, perhaps never as evidently as on Funkadelic. From the beginning, singer George Clinton has been the band's undisputed leader. he wrote or co-wrote nearly all of Funkadelic's seven tracks and also served as the album's producer. Bassist Billy Nelson and guitarist Eddie hHzel are superb instrumentalists, as heard on the slowly evolving 'music for my mother,' the frantic 'i got a thing,' and the album's motown soul-inflected hit single 'i bet you' (the latter featuring great vocal interplay between all members). and the seeds for such future Funkadelic epics as 'maggot brain' and 'wars of armageddon' can be traced to the album's longest compositions, 'mommy, what's a Funkadelic?' and 'good old music.' Out of stock2009 collection that incorporates material from their recordings with the Westbound and Warner labels. 2009 is the 40th Anniversary of Funkadelic's first release and this compilation celebrates that landmark. Over a period of 12 years from their Westbound debut album to the release of 1981's the Electric Spanking of War Babies, Funkadelic, piloted by George Clinton, redefined the way that black music was recorded and presented. They scored 20 R&B chart hit singles and a dozen chart albums, but their influence was far greater. Standing on the Verge includes the two #1 R&B singles 'One Nation Under a Groove' and '(Not Just) Knee Deep', sample favorites such as 'I'll Bet You' and 'Undisco Kidd' and dance floor monsters such as 'Cosmic Slop' and 'Better By the Pound'. Out of stockReleased on Westbound in July of 1974, Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On is a perpetual fan favorite, and it’s easy to hear why. Between the return of guitar hero Eddie Hazel to the fold, and the refining of their futuristic mutant Funk, Verge is a near-perfect waypoint between what was and what was to come. The glorious title track, a smart reworking of early Parliaments’ jam “Red Hot Momma”, the slow groove of “I’ll Wait” and more stratospheric guitar fireworks from Hazel, it’s a tour de force from beginning to end. Comes in a gatefold sleeve. (Westbound Records)

Remastered and expanded edition of this hyper-rare early '70s release from the 'Godfather Of Ska'. By 1970, Laurel Aitken was well and truly established as the Father of British Reggae, having dominated the country's Jamaican music scene since his arrival at the start of the '60s. But having enjoyed success with every UK-based West Indian record company of note over the previous eleven years, he was no longer content with simply domestic triumphs and set his sights on conquering foreign territories. So it was he took the unusual step of licensing his next album to companies in Europe and North America, while leaving his legions of British fans scrambling for the few copies available on import. Originally out on the Belgian label 'Hebra' 42 years ago and never reissued ever since, this is one of the unmissable 70's ska classics finally back on vinyl, with the addition of 4 bonus tracks! Sale!Martha High, who sang on stage with James Brown for 30 years and was his longest-running female vocalist, is stepping back into the spotlight for a new solo album. Martha HighSinging For The Good Times will be released on 22 April June on Blind Faith Records. The lead track from the album is 'Lovelight,' for which the radio impact date is 10 March. It's a welcome solo flight for High, now 71, who tours the world regularly as the lead singer with the band of Maceo Parker, another longtime acolyte of the Godfather of Soul. High's credentials as one of Brown's most trusted allies, and as part of his historic contribution to the history of soul music are unimpeachable. She was with him and the JBs at their celebrated concert at the Boston Garden in April 1968 james-brown-boston-1968on the night after Martin Luther King's assassination, when Brown prevented further rioting with his sheer stage presence and positive message. Martha was also by JB's side at such famous occasions as his courageous trip to Vietnam to entertain the American troops, and at the Rumble In The Jungle concert in Zaire, attended by 60,000 people, ahead of the George Foreman – Muhammad Ali fight of the same name in Kinshasa. james-brown-payback-label-45-masterBrown rarely used other solo voices in his prolific recorded output, with the exception of Bobby Byrd, but High sings on the 1968 live recording of 'There Was A Time' featured on the Star Time box set. She's the striking vocalist at the beginning of his 1974 US R&B No. 1 'The Payback,' and appears on the 1976 hit 'Body Heat.' Singing For The Good Times, recorded completely in analog for added authenticity, contains 11 original tracks, written, produced and arranged by Italian soul man Luca Sapio and his crew. Out of stockEsteemed soul crooner Sam Cooke achieved much in a short space of time, notching 29 top-40 singles in his seven-year solo career. On Night Beat, released in 1963, Rene Hall’s tasteful arrangements allow Cooke’s voice to shine, most notably on ‘Lost And Lookin’; jump blues standards ‘Shake Rattle And Roll’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’ are playfully rendered, with Billy Preston’s organ on the latter. Originals ‘Mean Old World’ and ‘Laughin’ And Clownin’ remind of his strong song-writing ability and his spirited take of ‘Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen’ recalled his days with the Soul Stirrers. A prime album for all Cooke fans! Label: Destination Moon - DMOO021 Barcode: 8055515234077

Out of stockSoul Jazz Records’ new Boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. Featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of New York City following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘Rapper’s Delight’ by the Sugarhill Gang, in September 1979. Artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip-hop. By the end of the year there were 30 hip-hop singles, all released by independent New York labels. The following year there were over 100 more, and so on. Boombox 2 tells the story of how hip-hop went from its evolutionary roots in the Bronx through DJs Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa through to this second phase where veteran music producers – Paul Winley, Peter Brown, Joe Robinson and others – all based in Harlem, began to put rap on vinyl for the first time. Harlem is also where the separate worlds of disco and hip-hop met through the styles and influence of earlier ‘uptown’ DJs - DJ Hollywood and Eddie Cheba. In similar fashion these veteran Harlem-based producers instinctively tapped into a long lineage of African-American rhythm and blues, soul and disco. The album features many early and rare cuts from the first generation of early rap artists including Lovebug Starski (as Little Starsky), Busy Bee, Eddie Cheba, Kool DJ AJ as well as many other little known artists. Boombox 2 is a triple-vinyl set (+ download code) LP and double CD pack that features extensive text, exclusive interviews and stunning photography by Jamel Shabazz, Martha Cooper and others. Sale!Cosmic congregation, your prayers have been answered. The Mass is back!!! If there was ever such an artist that perfectly encapsulated the Finders Keepers ethos then that character may well resemble the late and great Jean-Pierre Massiera. Inhabiting various small self-propelled studios in the South Of France surrounded by his various alter-egos, this master of outsider freak pop and phantastique psychedelia transcended multiple genres from spooked-surf through to cosmic disco in his lifelong career, all of which might go some way in explaining why this classic compendium known as Midnight Massiera (The B-Music Of Jean-Pierre Massiera) continues to be on the label's most requested re-releases. Well, eventually, from the stable of a artist who once called himself Jesus (before a theatrical electric chair crucifixion) it's time to witness the second coming and rejoice with this very special limited edition. With a custom two colour “cross” insignia screen printed onto “shroud” hessian backed with bible style burgundy book pleather and stitched seams, this impeccable collection finally gets the Finders Keepers limited edition treatment it deserves. Complete with full-colour insert and extensive sleevenotes, this single record combines more musical ideas, studio trickery and existential/controversial concepts than the average music lover could cram into an entire record collection. You need this record and when you're fully converted you’ll crave this anointed edition. (Finders Keepers Records – FKR022LPX)

Out of stockSoul Jazz Records’ latest excursion into the Crescent City vaults delves deep into the roots and history of the Voodoo world of New Orleans Funk. Packed to the brim with serious break-heavy, heavyweight funk tunes from classic New Orleans artists including Eddie Bo, Betty Harris, Dave Bartholomew, Johnny Adams and Eldridge Holmes (with the ever-present Allen Toussaint and The Meters as always behind the scenes). There is also a host of rare cuts from a number of lesser-known second line New Orleans artists, whose fame rarely reached past the walls of the city, including Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, James K-Nine, Norma Jean, Bob French, Chuck Colbert, Zilla Mayes and Joe Haywood. In the 1960s the syncopated beat of New Orleans Funk developed out of a gumbo mix of New Orleans local flavours – rhythm and blues, Mardi Gras Indians, the street percussion Second Line of the Jazz Funeral and Marching bands, Caribbean rhumba and mambo rhythms – all of which are in full effect. Even Zydeco, the rhythm and blues offspring of Louisiana Cajun music, had the funk as the King of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier, shows us here. New Orleans music and Voodoo both have their roots in the African-American free black and slave gatherings held at Congo Square from the 18th century onwards. Here Voodoo king Doctor John (the original one!) and Voodoo queen Marie Levaux held court over their followers, and here also could be heard the first sounds of New Orleans jazz music. Soul Jazz Records’ latest album describes how these two cultural forms are inextricably inter-related. The album traces the path of funk from the very first glimpses of the style – Dave Bartholomew’s super-tight ‘The Monkey’ (recorded in 1957) and James Waynes’ junkie jailbird anthem ‘Junco Partner’ (1951, later covered by Dr John, Professor Longhair, James Booker, and The Clash) through to the 1970s heavyweight boogie funk of Chocolate Milk’s rare groove classic Action Speak Louder Than Words and The Baron’s ‘Making It Better’. Also featured is a selection of hard-core classic funk productions from the legendary Eddie Bo (James K-Nine, David Robinson) and the genius of Allen Toussaint (Eldridge Holmes, Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, Lou Johnson). There also a number of super-rare independent New Orleans’ one-off 45 single funk productions from the likes of Chick Colbert and Bob French. And lastly, New Orleans Funk female vocalists are in full effect with tracks by Betty Harris (whose ‘Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul’ has just come out on Soul Jazz Records), Zilla Mayes and Norma Jean. This album is released as a heavyweight double gatefold vinyl (+ download code), and comes with extensive long-form sleeve-notes and stunning photography from the Ralston Crawford New Orleans collection and Hogan Jazz Archives at Tulane University, New Orleans. Sale!Masterful funk from the Detroit powerhouse labels of Eastbound and Westbound by Dean Rudland The film 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown' is trying its best to reinstate one of the oldest music history myths, namely that Detroit died a sudden musical death at about the time that Berry Gordy's eye was caught by the Californian sun and a beckoning Hollywood. Fortunately someone forgot to tell Detroit. In 1969, Holland, Dozier and Holland set up their Hot Wax and Invictus outfits and Armen Boladian's Westbound Records opened up its doors as one of the most adventurous mainstream record labels to commit music to vinyl.
