1919 are a post-punk band formed in Bradford, England in early 1980. Reissued on vinyl for the very first time since its initial release , the classic 1983 album gets a re-master from the band themself's. The Machine LP was heavily inspired by Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and the theme of alienation is prominent in the band’s oeuvre. If you are a huge fan of deathrock or dark punk--you have to own this--you won't be disappointed! (Restless Empire Records)

Formed from putrefying remnants of The Germs, The Consumers, The Bags, The Gun Club, and The Screamers among other L.A. punk outfits, 45 Grave were arguably the first American Goth/deathrock band and inarguably one of the best. Fronted by the Exene-meets-Barbarella vocal and visual stylings of Dinah Cancer (still one of the greatest stage names in a punk rock genre full of ‘em), 45 Grave also featured Paul B. Cutler on guitar, Don Bolles on drums, Rob (Ritter) Graves on bass, and Paul Roessler on keyboards, and from that all-star line-up came 1983’s Sleep in Safety, their lone studio release and only recording with the band’s original members. Probably most famous for the first appearance of the horrifyingly graphic, true-crime track “Partytime,” the single version of which was subsequently cut in 1985 and featured on The Return of the Living Dead soundtrack, Sleep in Safety also offered the early MTV track “Evil” and the band “theme song” “45 Grave” among other blandishments for those who like their rock and roll with a side of the macabre. For our Real Gone Music exhumation of this classic record, we have “embalmed” a very special edition, preserving the original album’s gatefold edition complete with lyrics and adding a custom inner sleeve drawn from the band’s very rare “A Tale of Strange Phenomena” press release—purple with black streaks vinyl! Folks have been dying for this one! Side One 1. INSURANCE FROM GOD 2. EVIL 3. PARTYTIME 4. DREAM HITS II 5. SLICE O’ LIFE Side Two 1. 45 GRAVE 2. PHANTOMS 3. VIOLENT WORLD 4. BAD LOVE 5. SURF BAT 6. Channelling goth, ‘positive punk’ and industrial, Alien Sex Fiend are experimental pioneers whose output defies easy categorisation. Formed at London’s goth epicentre, the Batcave, in 1982, the Fiends’ early use of loops, synth sheens and a dub sensibility yielded a deal with Anagram and rapid chart success; this dynamite vinyl compilation, exclusive to Radiation Records, draws from six early singles, including the electrode mix of popular debut ‘Ignore the Machine,’ freaky dirge ‘Lips Can’t Go,’ minimalist stomper ‘Dead And Buried,’ the rocking excess of ‘R.I.P.,’ intergalactic ‘E.S.T.’ and the mutant disco of ‘I’m Doing Time.’ A killer set tracking their early evolution, this is absolutely essential listening for all ASF fans. Second LP from the project led by Albert Limones (Nosferatu/ Creamers) following on from The Grotto Screams in 2021. Skeletal, brittle and skittish punk. Complex, layered tones with wobbly chorused bass, jagged drum patterns and bristling guitar. Amongst the rubble, 'Limones vocals are everything that hold this together, piercing and primal. Recalling Christian Death, Bauhaus, but Altar of Eden really stand alone The LP sounds like it’s been pulled from some tape archive from 1985. Not that it’s dated in any way. It’s just along the same strand of DNA.. (Drunken Sailor Records)

Perhaps you, like me, have listened to Bauhaus and Killing Joke and thought, ‘Well, this is great, but I wish it was a bit more of a rager.’ Similarly, maybe you listened to The Effigies and Samhain before musing to yourself, ‘Cool, although I thought it’d be darker.’ In other words, it’s occurred to you that deathrock could be a tad deathier and - if it’s not too distasteful of me to say so - rock a hell of a lot harder. Step forward, Altar of Eden. The project of Austin, TX resident Albert Limones (whose bruising sounds you may have heard in the shadowy likes of Nosferatu and Creamers), it’s an unholy marriage of Big Black’s mechanistic rhythms and the serrated, atmospheric noise of yer favourite early ‘80s 4AD types. Tracks like ‘The Abandonment’ absolutely lay waste to your speakers - it opens with a harrowing shriek before throbs of chorusing bass and guitar carve out their own unnerving paths. Somewhere in the distance, a menacing voice can be heard, buried in murk and distortion, with the song operating at breakneck pace and maximum volume - hey, I think our criteria may have been met. Second track ‘Tears’ ups the ante, leaning heavily on atmospheric gloom while pushing the drum machine to the fore, like Clan of Xymox setting up traps for the Slenderman, before the lacerating strafes of guitar on ‘Eternity’ invite the nightmares to truly begin. And that’s just the first three songs - by the time ‘Death in the Country’ gallops to a beautifully discordant end, we’re well and truly bewitched by this wonderful, horrible noise. ‘The Grotto Screams’ was originally released on cassette in April of last year, before finally getting this well-deserved vinyl pressing - one of the first truly essential releases of 2021. Don’t miss out. (Drunken Sailor Records)

1982's The Sky's Gone Out marks a stylistic midpoint in Bauhaus brief but spectacular career. The group released its first single in 1979 and disbanded in mid-1983. In comparison with their earlier, almost impenetrably convoluted literary references and effectively murky production, this album is lyrically more direct, musically more straightforward, and features vastly cleaner production. The first of these changes is exemplified in the album's second track, Silent Hedges, with its "going to hell again" chorus and in the bitter 'all we ever wanted was everything, all we ever got was cold' from All We Ever Wanted Was Everything. Daniel Ash's guitar work has finally become part of the structure of the songs as opposed to an ornamental splash used for emphasis. The music is less harsh - almost inviting the listener in before the slicing lyrics drop like poised blades. production-wise, the sound is no longer as cacophonously dense. such tracks as Spirit feature dueling guitars, rumbling drums, and a harpsichord, all clearly separated - at least until the intentional crush of the song's end. • Can I kick it? Yeah, sure, why not? Rippling through the murk of late 2022 to provide an unlikely source of light, Cardiff’s supremely noisy quintet Can Kicker are here with a last-minute shout for album of the year. If you like your hardcore to flex some serious muscle (well… riff-wise) while skirting around the edges of goth and post-punk, with the needle in the red all the while, their self-titled debut just could be the record for you. Like a breeze block to the back of your skull, this is guaranteed to make everything feel frayed and fuzzy at the edges, delivering a knockout punch that’ll leave you reeling. But you know, in that good way. Luke Penny’s voice is often lost in the maelstrom of pulverising power chords, but he’s no grunting hardcore knucklehead. His delivery is an impassioned yelp that’s dripping with anger and a matter-of-fact sneer that instantly sells his conviction, while the band conjure echoes of Die Kreuzen’s’ Century File’ one minute, Blitz’s ‘New Age’ the next. At full pelt, they sound like Protomartyr and Discharge fighting over whose turn it is to slash the cops’ tyres; the rest of the time (say, the scintillating headfuck of creepy-crawling classic ‘Waking Dream’), they’re busy making the holiest of rackets on what’s arguably the best UK punk record since Denim & Leather’s might ‘Sacred Autism’. By the time the scorched-earth anti-psych of closer ‘Stupid Game Part II’ rolls around, you’ll be aware that you’ve been taken on a journey and you’ll want to relive the whole thing as soon as possible. But take a minute to feel grateful that Drunken Sailor are putting this one out into the world, and just in time for us to call it a Christmas gift as well. This album will melt your synapses so you’ve no idea what your brain’s trying to tell you, beyond the certainty that Can Kicker are the ones for you. Records this deliciously brutal yet immediately habit-forming don’t come along often enough - this might be the last chance for a slamdance in 2022, so give your ears a tinnitus-inducing treat. Will Fitzpatrick. (Drunken Sailor Records)

In late 1983, Predrag Cvetičanin (guitar, vocals) with Zoran Đorđević (guitar), Branko (bass guitar), and Boban (drums) formed the band Dobri Isak (Kind Isaak). After the home made demo recording and short pause, Cvetičanin, with bassist Miloš Miladinović, and drummer Saša Marković "Markiz" reformed the band, whom in the period of 1984-1985 will join Nenad Cvetičanic, Predrag's brother, from the band Arnold Layne. They recorded their first and only album „Mi plačemo iza tamnih naočara“ (We Cry Behind Dark Glasses), released in 1986 by the Niš Student Cultural Center (SKC), being the first release of the Studentkult production. The album, released on compact cassette only and printed in a limited number of 100 copies, had been distributed by the Ljubljana ŠKUC, and rapidly sold out. Band's concert activity was consist of winning the Best Performance Award on Serbian Youth Festival in Knjaževac in 1985, after they gain the opportunity to appear the Dani Novih Omladinskih Novina in Split (Croatia) on Summer of the same year. After that the band appeared with several other Niš bands at the „Pozdrav iz Niša“ manifestation in Skopje (Macedonia). In a short period of time, the band had another performance in Skopje, appearing as guests at the first solo concert of the band Padot na Vizantija. During the late 1985, the band performed at the Rock Bands Festival held at the Belgrade Dom Omladine, and on early 1986, the band had two appearances at the Zagreb (Croatia) alternative rock festival Yu Rock Moment, on March in the semi-final, and on May at the festival finale, held at the Republic Square, performing with Let 3, Oktobar 1864, and Mizar.
