While the goth scene in England was picking up commercial steam in the mid-'80s, the Sisters of Mercy may have seemed quiet, but they roared back with 1987's Floodland. Opening with the driving two-part hymn Dominion / Mother Russia, Sisters leader Andrew Eldritch (along with bassist Patricia Morrison) creates a black soundscape that is majestic and vast. While the earlier Sisters releases were noisy, sometimes harsh affairs, Floodland is filled with lush production (thanks to Meat Loaf writer / producer Jim Steinman and the New York Choral Society) and lyric imagery that is both scary and glorious. The slower tracks, like Flood and 1959, are some of the best ethereal sounds goth has to offer, and the downright regal This Corrosion is one of the best songs of the genre. A definite milestone. Includes fold out 12x24" poster/lyric sheet. Comes with glossy black innersleeve with white artist name & head and star logo. Label: Warner-Music Barcode: 825646077014

  • Cheltenham’s Horror Punk/Death Rockers The Screaming Dead, whose name is drawn from the English title of the 1972 horror film “Dracula contra Frankenstein” is one of the few bands that managed to authentically straddle the line between punk and gothic / goth rock in the early 80s. Like The Damned, the band’s oeuvre includes purist three chord punk alongside more nuanced gothic rock pieces. And similar to kindred souls in bands like The Dark and Siekiera, Screaming Dead’s early aggressive approach gave way, later in their career, to a more measured and atmospheric gothic sound. Songs like "Valley Of The Dead" or "Warcry", which still sound very originally like punk rock, already have a dark melancholy in them that foreshadows darker things. With "Night Creatures" or "20th Century Vampire" they have succeeded in creating absolute masterpieces, these songs take you into the night and leave you there. Towards the end, saxophone and organ come into play, it gets poppier, but also more dramatic, but remains darkly melancholic. There's a dirty undertone running through every song, which gives the overall work that extra punk touch. Screaming Dead from have created a new, very own sound. Reissue of the compilation from 1993, first time on vinyl. This record comes with an additional CD what complains 5 more songs. This compilation is a cross-section of the band's creative phase from 1982 - 1984. Includes songs from the following releases Tracks 1 to 3 from "Valley Of The Dead" 7'' (1982, Skull Records) Tracks 4 to 5 from V/A "Pulse Of A Nation: A Rising Free Compilation" Cassette Tape (Rising Free Fanzine, 1983) Tracks 6 to 9 from "Night Creatures" 12' (1983, No Future Records) Tracks 10 to 11 from "Paint It Black" 7'' (1984, No Future Records) Tracks 12 to 15 from "Danse Macabre Collection" 12'' (1984, No Future Records) Tracks 16 to 18 from "A Dream Of Yesterday" 12'' (1984, Angel Records) (Bomb All Records)

  • “Gothics” - a time before the word goth had even taken shape - believed in the do-it-yourself punk ethos that anyone could pick up an instrument. Gray clouds were starting to form and in the unlikely city of Hamburg, a brazen and haunting gang of five women formed Xmal Deutschland. As any true punk would, Xmal Deutschland’s members Caro May, Rita Simon, Manuela Rickers, Fiona Sangster and Anja Huwe, started the band despite any previous musical experience. The “Schwarze Welt” seven-inch was released on the local punk label, ZickZack, in 1981 and introduced the band as an unsettling swarm of intensity. There’s an urgency in its repetitive dirge, a swirling mania that persists on the b-side with “Die Wolken” and “Großstadtindianer” whose crude synthesizer noises escalate in tension. Most of all, Huwe’s uniquely venomous German vocals quickly became embedded in the unbridled and burgeoning scene of glamorous gloom. Punk’s independence from the stiff grip of tradition allowed the band to find solace in anti-establishment art and music, far from the conventions of the past. With their peacocked hair and thick kohl-lined eyes, Xmal Deutschland’s music retained both a restlessness and delicacy, transcending any confines of the “Neue Deutsche Welle” movement (much like their colleagues and friends DAF and Einstürzende Neubauten) with the release of the “Incubus Succubus” single in 1982. It instantly became a post-punk classic. The guitar’s buzz ransacks through the melody as the ghoulish primitiveness of Huwe’s voice teases that maybe, just maybe, she is the nightmarish creature of which to be aware. The b-sides, “Zu Jung Zu Alt” and “Blut Ist Liebe,” keep strict militaristic dance beats as they teem in agitation. That same year, the band performed in London as support for the Cocteau Twins; it was the platform they needed to ricochet into the arms of the ripped fishnet masses. Early Singles (1981-1982), is a map of the foundational movements of Xmal Deutschland, just seconds before takeoff. Bonus tracks on the compilation, “Kaellbermarsch” and a gritty live version of “Allein,” further accentuate their fusion of toughness with the quixotic decadence of atmospheric synthesizers. The band’s pursuit of something greater is palpable with this release, a reflection of a time that introduced accessibility to new means of making music following the onset of punk. 1982's The Sky's Gone Out marks a stylistic midpoint in Bauhaus brief but spectacular career. The group released its first single in 1979 and disbanded in mid-1983. In comparison with their earlier, almost impenetrably convoluted literary references and effectively murky production, this album is lyrically more direct, musically more straightforward, and features vastly cleaner production. The first of these changes is exemplified in the album's second track, Silent Hedges, with its "going to hell again" chorus and in the bitter 'all we ever wanted was everything, all we ever got was cold' from All We Ever Wanted Was Everything. Daniel Ash's guitar work has finally become part of the structure of the songs as opposed to an ornamental splash used for emphasis. The music is less harsh - almost inviting the listener in before the slicing lyrics drop like poised blades. production-wise, the sound is no longer as cacophonously dense. such tracks as Spirit feature dueling guitars, rumbling drums, and a harpsichord, all clearly separated - at least until the intentional crush of the song's end. • Unholy Passion is the second release by Samhain, Glenn Danzig's band after the disbanding of the Misfits. In 1987 Danzig re-recorded the guitar and some vocal tracks for the songs, removing the original work done by Pete "Damien" Marshall. The recordings were given new mixes and, with the addition of "Misery Tomb", were released as part of Final Descent in 1990. The remixed versions were released as a standalone CD for the first time as part of the Samhain Box Set in 1999 and as an individual CD in 2000. The original 12" vinyl EP was pressed twice: once on black vinyl and the classic tan cover, and then again in 1986, on both red and black vinyl (with a maroon sleeve), and white vinyl (with tan cover). According to Eerie Von in his photographic book Misery Obscura the album was “a departure from our first release: more underground, more tribal. A step back further into the darkness”. Label: D. & V. • Svart Records proudly present the vinyl reissue of Grave Pleasures’ modern classic album Motherblood There are still those rare bands out there in the world that have a unique ability to combine macabre, mystifying rock with a more pop-oriented flare, a la early Bowie or early The Cure. Grave Pleasures are such a band that is equally suited for playing on a stadium stage, or in some Lynchian nightmare. It’s that duality and electrifying contradiction that makes their music so exhilarating. Lead guitarist Juho Vanhanen (Oranssi Pazuzu) steps up to write the majority of the songs together with British-born outcast Mat McNerney (Hexvessel, ex- Beastmilk/DHG/Code). His screaming telecaster and unique interplay of discord and harmony has become a trademark of the band’s sound. Together with guitarist Aleksi Kiiskilä (ex - Kohu 63), their strings shimmer, hammer and howl out a web of sound which is distinctly Grave Pleasures. Fleshed out by the hypnotic signature rhythms of Valtteri Arino (ex- Beastmilk) on bass and Rainer Tuomikanto frenetically pounding the funeral drums (Ajattara, ex- Shining Swe), this group of well-established punks have started to reach up to their zenith on their sordid testament Motherblood. Motherblood was recorded at Orgone Studios in the UK with Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost, Ulver, Paradise Lost) in March 2017 and originally released by Century Media on the same year. The studio was suitably situated on the site of an old WW2 coding bunker and brought with it the isolation of the bleak British countryside. The setting helped give the album an intense and smiling urgency that picks up where 80s UK bands such as Magazine, The Wire and Echo And The Bunnymen left off, but never stopping long enough to look back too much into the past. Featuring guest vocals from David Tibet from Current 93, the band sets the tone for their inspirations, from the esoteric underground of England’s hidden reverse to Manchester’s sound of misery. With their own metallic raw tone clashed with pop hooks, Motherblood is a furiously passionate and contemporary record, which re-defines post-punk as a “war-cry for the eternally doomed.” They have been described as "A post-punk wet dream," or perhaps more honestly as "bat-shit lunatics," and their music is in a funereal world of its own. Motherblood is a truly danceable, pop-feast of raw, banging pleasure – in all its primitive, gothic tribalism. Dance-floor death rock that brings with it an uncanny sense of inspired song craft that made Bowie’s Berlin era sound so fresh and revolutionary, Killing Joke’s tribal anthems so desperately ominous and dark throbbing melancholy of Depeche Mode’s atmospheric pop so damn sexy. Just about every part of this record bleeds menace, or emanates nuclear fumes. It’s unsafe territory which in turn makes it thrilling, sexy and most dangerously of all, catchy. Finally back in print, Motherblood is available on wax once again! Label: Svart Records Barcode: 6430080234738

  • Pornography is the fourth studio album by English Gothic rock band The Cure, released on 3 May 1982 by Fiction Records. Preceded by the non-album single "Charlotte Sometimes", it was the band's first album with new producer Phil Thornalley, and was recorded at RAK Studios from January to April 1982. The sessions saw the band on the brink of collapse, with heavy drug use, band in-fighting, and frontman Robert Smith's depression fueling the album's musical and lyrical content. Pornography represents the conclusion of the Cure's early dark, gloomy musical phase, which began with their second album Seventeen Seconds (1980). Following its release, bassist Simon Gallup left the band, and the Cure switched to a much brighter and more radio-friendly new wave sound. Although it was poorly received by critics at the time of release, Pornography was the Cure's most popular album to date, reaching number eight on the UK Albums Chart. It has since gone on to gain acclaim from critics, and is now considered an important milestone in the development of the style of music known as gothic rock. Parálisis Permanente was formed in 1981 by Eduardo Benavente and Nacho Canut, at the time members of the legendary Alaska y Los Pegamoides, one the first post-punk bands from the renowned Movida Madrileña scene to achieve a relevant degree of success. After two EPs and a few changes in the line-up, Benavente became the natural leader of the band, joined by Johnny Canut, Ana Curra (also an ex-Pegamoide) and Rafa Balmaseda (ex-Glutamato Ye-Yé). They recorded El Acto in 1982 and soon it became one of the key albums to come out from the early '80s scene that was rapidly changing the face of Spanish music. The LP embraced the dark sound and image represented then by UK bands such as Bauhaus, Killing Joke, The Cure or The Damned and filtered those influences through Benavente's immense talent and his captivating presence as a performer. The record was a mature and strong piece of work, superior in sound and overall effect to most contemporary Spanish albums. When everything indicated that the band was only starting its greatly promising career, a fatal car accident on their way to a show took Benavente's life when he was only 20 years old. Although another single was released weeks after and the other members would carry on being involved in music, this tragic event meant the end for Parálisis Permanente as a band.
