The second release on Sealed Records is a 14 Track round up of the five singles by Zounds. The debut single from 1980 Can't Cheat Karma was released on Crass Records and 39 Years later still stands as one of the finest singles both politically and musically. For the next three singles Zounds released them on Rough Trade Records, along with their debut album The Curse of Zounds. 1981's Demystification was a tense and stark masterpiece. It was followed by the haunting Mikey Dread-produced Dancing and then the more straight up pop of More Trouble Coming Everyday. The final single of Zounds Mark 1 was La Vacht Qui Rit released on Belgium label Not So Brave in 1983 and was originally supposed to be a split single with The Mob but ended up with two scratchy studio tracks and two rough and raw live tracks recorded in Holland in 1982. Every home should have these essential Zounds recordings. Label: Sealed Records
  • It came out of nowhere in 1982, this punk rock/hardcore fireball with the bright yellow sleeve. In one sense, The Zero Boys' Vicious Circle was yet another example of how U.S. punk seemed to peak coast to coast that year. But unlike most coastal punk, the Zero Boys were pointing the way to a scene that could accommodate heaping helpings of melody, intelligence, and rock 'n' roll, not just turbo-charged ferocity. Vinyl version contains a coupon that for a limited time allows you to download MP3 audio files of the recordings. "From 1979 into ‘83, the Indianapolis based ZBs were the finest hardcore blitz in the Midwest if not all the lower 48 states. Proof is Vicious Circle and the two decades since of copyists, bootleggers, practitioners and reunion concert pogoers. Though before and after that LP’s 1982 release they recorded the Livin’ in the 80’s 7”, songs for three comps and released the post-mortem History Of... cassette revealing their transformation into a toured band warming to the metaphysical and their demise while still waving torches of rock ‘n’ roll panache. When the Ramones lost it, the Zero Boys found it; Adding a slam brigade fist to the Blitzkrieg Beat. • "Poly Styrene smashed barriers. Sure one unusual young woman screaming, "Some people think that little girls should be seen and not heard but I think - OH BONDAGE UP YOURS! 1-2-3-4!" didn't end ageism, racism, sexism or blind consumerism but her defiance inspired millions to fight those same things. X-Ray Spex are an usual entry in the British punk pantheon. With a Samali/British born front woman Poly Styrene, formally involved with the hippie culture she witnessed a Sex Pistols show in 77 and went on to form a punk band of her own. Unique in image and blistering in their sound, they released 5 singles and an album between 77-80. Constant touring caused Poly to become very disenchanted with the whole 'pop star' experience and she left the group at that point but the sole album they recorded as gone on to become a classic of a punk record. Germ Free Adolescents ' most recognizable trait is its songs that deal with consumerism, commercialism, and personal indendity in genreal. Tracks like Art-I-Ficial, I Am A Posuer, Genetic Engineering, The Day The World Turned Dayglo and singles like I Am Cliche are perfect examples of the lyrical standpoint in which the band took. Poly's high pitched edgy singing style is forefront, catching your attention right off the bat and the music behind her, a Sex Pistols style guitar driven blast of pure punk rock n roll madness albeit with a Saxophone! Original member Lora Logic played the Saxophone which certainly is another trademark element of X-Ray Spex that wasnt exactly a common thing found in punk until at least the mid 80's when ska and reggae became a heavy part of the genre (Madness) and of course in the 90's when it really exploded with Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger. The lone "ballad" style song on the album, the title track is great and it gives way to the fast/slow blast of Plastic Bag which might be the most bombastic song it bursts with a kenetic guitar riff-sax/guitar blast pattern. It shares honors with Oh! Bondage Up Yours! as the bands true anthems. Bondage you might recognize from somewhere or another if you're into punk or indie rock in general. It's a certified punk classic. - Germfree Adolescents, the Only Album Release from X Ray Spex, Is One of the Most Influential Punk Rock Albums Ever Made - Ranked as One of the Greatest Punk Rock Records by Everybody from Greil Marcus to Robert Christgau toMojo to Spin - Features Penetrating Lyrics and Passionate Vocals from Frontwoman Poly Styrene - Also Features Lora Logic on Saxophone - Key Tracks Include “The Day the World Turned Dayglo” and “Germ Free Adolescents” - Includes Faithful Reproduction of Original Inner Lyric Sleeve - “X-Ray Clear” Vinyl Pressing Offering Superior Fidelity Real Gone Music is proud to present Germfree Adolescents, one of the signature albums of the early (1978) British punk movement, in an “x-ray clear” vinyl edition that serves as an ideal prism through which to see the hypocrisy of consumerist culture. The one and only LP release from X Ray Spex and its irrepressible frontwoman Poly Styrene has been deemed by everybody from Greil Marcus to Robert Christgau to Spin to Mojo as one of the greatest punk albums ever made, and for this reissue, we’ve done it right; besides the clear vinyl (offering excellent sound), we’ve reproduced the inner lyric sheet, where you can read Poly’s brilliant observations about the plastic, corporate nature of modern society. All of which she sings in a passionate yowl all her own (with Lora Logic among others backing on saxophone); this is not only one of the most penetratingly observant punk records, it’s also one of the most passionate, and, surprisingly enough, catchy. Check out “The Day the World Turned Day-Glo” and “Germ Free Adolescents” if it’s hooks you’re after; if it’s righteous anger and a noisy racket you’re seeking, every track will do ya. SIDE ONE 1. Edition on 180-gram audiophile vinyl, coming with an insert. 'Los Angeles' is the debut album of the American punk rock band X, originally released in 1980. Most punk bands used their musical inability to create their own style, but X actually consisted of some truly gifted musicians, including rockabilly guitarist Billy Zoom, bassist John Doe, and front woman Exene Cervenka. Although they are tagged as a punk rock act, X are not easily categorized. Besides punk and loads of electricity, they also added country and folk flavours. Label: Music On Vinyl

“Youth of America” is pressed on high-quality vinyl at RTI and packaged in a sturdy, old-fashioned tip-on sleeve. The tracks have been mastered from original tapes by Greg Sage himself, and the cover is identical to the original sleeve as issued in 1981. Simply obliterating any conception of the Wipers as a mere punk band, Greg Sage released this follow-up to “Is This Real?” in 1981—a sophisticated, overwhelming response to the evil times marked by the turn of the decade. Broken up into six long songs, “Youth of America” is a much colder, harrowing experience than the teen angst of their debut. Vocally, Sage comes off as sleep-deprived and forsaken, snarling not only at his own predicament but at the predicament of the entire world. (Jackpot Records)

  • This LP went in and out of print quickly in 1985 shortly before the Varukers' first breakup. Unlike the band's earlier UK82 style, this record captures Varukers taking on some of the metal influence that was sweeping UK hardcore at the time. Powerful and energetic hardcore with metallic undertones, this record is more in line with Antisystem, Antisect, or Sacrilege than say Partisans or Abrasive Wheels. Now available again on vinyl. The Varukers was one of the first groups of the UK 82 movement - the second generation of punk rock that took the spirit of '77 and merged it with the incessant beat of NWOBHM - responsible for creating UK hardcore. Heavily inspired by Discharge, The Varukers released three 7"s in the early '80s before this, their first and most definitive album, came out in 1983 on the legendary Riot City Records (Vice Squad, Abrasive Wheels, Chaos U.K.). Back in print on LP thanks to Radiation Reissues, "Bloodsuckers" is one of the definitive pieces of early UK hardcore, full of Sabbath-inspired guitar work, pounding rhythms and aggressive, anarchistic lyrical content. • December 2019 marks the 40 year anniversary of an important record in our lives, AK79. Within the grooves of this historical landmark compilation lies a connection to our musical whakapapa as New Zealanders and music lovers. A defining record, having captured a raw snapshot of the punk subculture in Auckland during the late 70s, this much-loved compilation is a living, breathing statement of what came before today. To mark this very special occassion, Flying Nun Records pays tribute to those ragged and rambunctious years by presenting AK79 40th Anniversary Edition Reissue, due in-stores throughout New Zealand on December 13th. Presented in a myriad of forms; on limited edition red vinyl, standard black vinyl and CD, we can celebrate this iconic cornerstone of alternative kiwi rock history with this special anniversary edition. Featuring new liner notes written by Ripper Records’ Bryan Staff, the 2019 reissue will feature all songs ever featured on any version of AK79 for a complete look at its recorded history. About AK79 Raw, unfiltered, shambolic madness. The vision to capture the Auckland scene began with Bryan Staff (Head of Ripper Records and Radio DJ at the time) who saw reason to capture the music coming out of the local punk venues of the time such as Windsor Castle and Zwines. Originally released by Ripper Records in December 1979, bands that featured on the original pressing included The Swingers, The Scavengers, The Primmers, Proud Scum, Toy Love and The Terrorways. The musical movement captured on record was an abrasive, empowered response to the overindulgent progressive rock and glam era of the 70s. The initial pressing, with its iconic black and white cover designed by Terence Hogan was limited to 500 copies, to be later reissued on vinyl and cassette through CBS. During the 40 years since AK79’s first release, the record took on a life of its own. Those original 500 pressings became a rare and coveted collectors item, and somewhat of an “urban myth” on the vinyl market. So the story goes, when the original master recordings of AK79 were discarded in 1982, it only created further demand for this enigmatic record. Responding to the call, an expanded version of AK79 arose, released on CD by Simon Grigg and Roger Shepherd as a joint release by Propeller Records and Flying Nun Records in 1993. This time there were some late additions, including tracks from The Suburban Reptiles, The Spelling Mistakes, The Features and The Marching Girls, along with additional tracks from the original bands on the first pressing. This particular reissue was remastered and mixed by Grigg, and came bundled with additional liner notes by Grigg, Staff and The Terrorways’ own Kerry Buchanan. In November 2008, a bootlegged 2 LP version would come to life for a very special reunion gig in Auckland which involved The Scavengers, The Spelling Mistakes and the first performances from The Terrorways and Proud Scum since 1980 in a rare event. At the time, it was sold at the show with unreleased tracks and a 20-page booklet. Six years later, the AK79 compilation was honoured in its many forms with the IMNZ Classic Record award, presented at the Taite Music Prize ceremony. 40 years on, the spirit of the AK79 still packs a punch and the feeling captured in these recordings are as relevant as ever. Zounds formed in Reading in 1977 releasing their first single Can’t Cheat Karma on Crass Records in 1980. This early association with Crass meant they were key figures in the bourgeoning anarcho-punk scene along with The Mob, Poison Girls, Flux of Pink Indians and many others. Moving to Rough Trade Records the band released their first album The Curse of Zounds in 1982, recording and mixing the LP within five days. The cover art, by anarchist artist Clifford Harper, featured a painting of fire fighters apparently trying to put out a blaze at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. However, the picture continued onto the back cover, which showed that in fact they are spraying the fire with petrol, thus feeding it. Someone must have slipped one of those post-anarcho-syndicalist pamphlets in with these guys’ Beano comics! This is sturdy, above-average English pop-punk with some surprisingly infectious hooks. But the foursome ain’t just disaffected youngsters lookin’ for a kiss (or any ol’ white riot) – they’re searching out the meaning of life in the post-industrial capitalist system. As long as you’ve got the tunes, fellas – go for it! – Trouser Press. "The curse of zounds" is now seen as a classic of the genre and one of the most inspirational albums of the post-punk period. The Ruts were formed in west London in 1977, but guitarist Paul Fox and vocalist Malcolm Owen were schoolfriends who had already been in several bands ? meeting with drummer Dave Ruffy and bassist John 'Segs' Jenning - The group played many Rock Against Racism benefit concerts and rose to prominence supporting The Damned in early 1979 - A contract with Virgin followed, and by June of that year, the group were in the UK Top 10 with Babylon's Burning. The Crack followed in September, benefitting a crystal-clear production from Mick Glossop. Reaching No 16 in the UK, it sounds as vibrant and pugnacious as it did on its first release. Representing the very apex of politically conscious British punk, The Crack stands as a perfect snapshot of the inner-city temperature of the late 70s. This re-issue faithfully replicates the original 1979 Virgin Records UK release and is pressed onto high quality 180g vinyl. Label: Virgin – UMCLP031 Barcode: 805520240314

Formed in 1976 in Edinburgh, Scotland, John Peel favourites The Rezillos were viewed as a punk act simply because they emerged at a specific time in the history of rock. But there was so much more to The Rezillos and their music. Branding themselves a “new wave beat group”, The Rezillos’ music lacked the nihilism and social commentary of many of their counterparts, replacing this with an irreverent glam rock image and a love of science fiction, B-movie, comic book and campy girl group iconography that set them apart from their musical peers. Initially performing mainly ‘50s and ‘60s rock ‘n’ roll covers at their live shows, Rezillos guitarist and future Human League band member – Jo Callis – began penning their own original songs, and soon after came the release of their highly acclaimed debut LP, Can’t Stand The Rezillos, contained here. This classic album is now available in this collectable 2CD digipack release, together with their famous live recording from the Glasgow Apollo on 23rd December 1978 – released at the time under the name of “Mission Accomplished… But The Beat Goes On”. Not only does Flying Saucer Attack contain these two great recordings, but the package also includes all the B-sides and rarities from the band’s first stint as The Rezillos between 1977 and 1979. Includes the hits ‘(My Baby Does) Good Sculptures’, ‘I Can’t Stand My Baby’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘Destination Venus’, ‘Top of the Pops’, plus many rarities not included on the band’s initial two albums, such as live versions of ‘Flying Saucer Attack’, ‘Twist and Shout’, and alternative versions of ‘(My Baby Does) Good Sculptures’ and ‘Getting Me Down’. • Formed in 1976 in Edinburgh, Scotland, John Peel favourites The Rezillos were viewed as a punk act simply because they emerged at a specific time in the history of rock. Initially performing mainly ‘50s and ‘60s rock ‘n’ roll covers at their live shows, Rezillos guitarist and future Human League band member – Jo Callis – began penning their own original songs, and soon after came the release of their highly acclaimed debut LP, Can’t Stand The Rezillos released in 1978. The album includes the UK top twenty hit "Top Of The Pops", as well as several cover versions of 1960s songs: "Glad All Over" (Dave Clark Five), "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight" (Fleetwood Mac), and "I Like It" (Gerry and the Pacemakers). It was produced by the acclaimed Bob Clearmountain in collaboration with Tony Bongiovi. Label: Survival Research
