Hailing from Leeds, England and by far the biggest punk band from the area they were seldom out of the Independent charts between 1980 and 1984. Specialising in the sort of massive rowdy choruses that could put an ear-to-ear smile on the face of a dead man. Like so many of those intense bands of the time, their fire burnt brightly for just a relatively short time, but the shadows it cast, and the colourful musical legacy they bestowed the punk scene, were both important and influential! Adolescents, also known as The Blue Album due to its cover design, is the debut studio album by American punk rock band the Adolescents, released in April 1981 on Frontier Records. Recorded after guitarist Rikk Agnew and drummer Casey Royer joined the band, it features several songs written for their prior group, the Detours, including "Kids of the Black Hole" and "Amoeba", which became two of the Adolescents' most well-known songs. Adolescents was one of the first hardcore punk albums to be widely distributed throughout the United States, and became one of the best-selling California hardcore albums of its time.[1] The band never toured in support of it, and broke up four months after its release. The Blue Album lineup of Agnew, Royer, guitarist Frank Agnew, bassist Steve Soto and singer Tony Brandenburg reunited several times in subsequent years, but only for brief periods. A 44-track 2CD set covering every A and B-side issued by Punk legends Angelic Upstarts between 1978-85. Running in chronological order, it starts with the self released ‘The Murder Of Liddle Towers’ and is followed by the major label debut of ‘I’m An Upstart’ which hit No.31 in the UK charts. ‘Teenage Warning’ then hit No.29 and saw the band in the nation’s living rooms via their appearance on Top Of The Pops. A hat-trick of hits was completed when ‘Never ‘Ad Nothin’ hit No.52 in late 1979. The band moved into the 1980s with hits like ‘Out Of Control’ (No.58), ‘We Gotta Get Out Of This Place’ (No.58 and incredibly appearing here on CD for the first time in its original 7” version), ‘Last Night Another Soldier’ (No.65) and ‘Kids On The Street’ (No.57) before they switched to (then) newly established Independent label Anagram Records. The hits kept coming though: ‘Woman In Disguise’ reached No.18 in the Independent Chart, swiftly followed by a No.24 for ‘Solidarity’. Despite numerous disruptive line-up changes vocalist Mensi remained a constant throughout and achieved further notoriety with the No.14 ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ and the No.4 ‘Brighton Bomb’. Big Boys were an American pioneering punk rock band who are credited with having helped to create and introduce skate punk as a new style of music, which became popular in the 1980s. They also were famous for bringing elements of funk into their hardcore punk style. They’ve long done things differently in Austin, Texas, and the take on hardcore pioneered by one of the city’s sons, Big Boys, in the early 80s was no exception. Where peers Scratch Acid, The Dicks, and MDC pursued hardcore or art-punk angularity, Big Boys were mixing furious hardcore with loose-limbed funk and tight pop, all the while penning lyrics that struck a blend between punk ideology, angsty alienation, and goofy humor. It was delivered via 7”s, EPs, a split LP, compilations, three studio albums, and the live DIY shows that were audience participation-fueled free-for-alls. The idea was for fans to leave feeling like they were part of the band. Originally released on the Wasted Talent label and reissued last year by Modern Classics Recordings, 1981’s debut album Where’s My Towel was inspired by the group’s growing dissatisfaction with their part in the release of Live At Raul’s. Returning with Lullabies Help The Brain Grow two years later, they were still striking out at situations around them. The opening track, “We Got Your Money” is a sort of rally cry to the misunderstandings of their scene and to the fraternity boys and girls that came to gawk or cause trouble: “And to all you frat boys/We got your money in our hands!” they shouted gleefully. Song titles including “We’re Not In It To Lose,” “Fight Back,” and “Assault” proved that the gloves were off. Produced by Spot, legendary in-house producer at SST Records, Lullabies is an album that caught the band in ever-turbulent mode, switching drummers through the recording from Fred Schultz to Rey Washam – the fourth person to occupy the stool for vocalist Randy “Biscuit” Turner, guitarist Tim Kerr, and bassist Chris Gates. The album found the band testing the boundaries of their wide-ranging sound, with double-quick thrashers like “Lesson” and double-funky jams like “Funk Off” (helped along by the brass of the Fun Fun Fun 12" horn section). Kerr took lead vocals on two tracks, and on “Sound On Sound,” they combine his languid delivery and pendulum bass in a way that must have pricked the ears of a young Steven Malkmus. With features in the earliest issues of Thrasher Magazine and coveted spots on their influential Skate Rock tape comps, Big Boys were the first band to be labeled “skate rock,” the nascent version of the world-conquering skate punk of the late 1980s and 1990s. Now, Light In The Attic’s Modern Classics Recordings imprint is bringing their pioneering music to a new audience. Following the 2013 re-release of Where’s My Towel / Industry Standard, 2014 saw reissues of both Lullabies Help The Brain Grow and the following year’s No Matter How Long The Line Is At The Cafeteria, There’s Always A Seat, which brought the band’s story to a close. Active for five years in the early 1980s, the Big Boys mixed furious hardcore with loose-limbed funk and tight pop structures, all the while penning lyrics that struck a blend between punk ideology, angsty alienation and clever humor. They were, in the memory of Minor Threat frontman Ian MacKaye, “Enormous men, decorated jump suits, a horn section, 200 friends onstage singing and dancing.” They were Big Boys by name and by nature – and they had a big effect on US punk culture. When the prevailing trend was for playing hard and fast, this Austin, Texas four-piece played loose and funky. Their cult recordings struck a blend between punk ideology and clever humor, just as the band both railed against and celebrated the hardcore community that bore them. Released at the time of their split in 1985 and now reissued by Modern Classics Recordings, the group’s final album, No Matter How Long the Line Is At the Cafeteria, There’s Always a Seat finds Big Boys continuing to innovate, even including the sound of turntable scratching on Common Beat, a sound rarely heard outside of hip-hop at the time. After five short years and many recordings, the Big Boys went separate ways. “We never really decided to ‘break up’, it just happened,” said Kerr. “We had been on a two month tour, and it got to be exactly like being in a station wagon with mom and dad with your brother and sisters… lots of tension and everything.” Along with an appearance in the documentary American Hardcore and these new reissues, the band’s legacy continues in current bands, like Fidlar, Wavves, and The Orwells, and in the mark they made on Austin, Texas, which, in tribute to the band, adopted the name of their song, “Fun Fun Fun” for an annual arts/music festival. A pure shot of abrasive punk/rock 'n' roll with a hint of working class Oi!, Blitz were among the most influential punk bands ever. It was Gary Bushell (who wrote for "Sounds" and was later dubbed the God Father of Oi!) who brought the band to the attention of his friend Chris Berry, who had just set up No Future records with a bank loan and high hopes. No Future 001 catalog (and Blitz's debut release) was a 4 track EP titled "All Out Attack", a 20,000 copy bestseller that made the label's fortune, later to become the most representative of the whole UK82 movement. Channel 3, aka CH3, was formed in 1980 in suburban Cerritos, about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles, with frontman Mike Magrann, guitarist Kimm Gardener, bassist Larry Kelly and drummer Mike Burton. Signing to Posh Boy in 1981, their eponymous EP had the hit ‘Manzanar,’ which was championed by John Peel on the BBC. Posh Boy founder Robbie Fields was in the producer’s chair for their excellent debut, Fear of Life, a blistering punk assault on American values. Greatest Hits Vol. 1" is the first album by the Punk/Oi! legends Cockney Rejects, originally released in 1980. Despite the title, it is not a greatest hits compilation. Though they didn’t get around to (allegedly) naming the genre of Oi! until their second album, working class football hooligans Cockney Rejects went a long way towards defining the sound. The raw street punk on the cheekily titled "Greatest Hits Vol. 1" dismisses English punk’s art-schooled class of ‘77 to embrace the everyday Brit who drinks a pint or two while watching his favorite football team. Christ the Album was the fourth album by Crass from 1982. It was originally released as a boxed set double vinyl LP package, including one disk of new studio material and another, entitled Well Forked… But Not Dead, of a live recording of their June 1981 gig at the 100 Club in London along with other studio tracks, demos and tape fragments. The box also included a book, A Series Of Shock Slogans and Mindless Token Tantrums (which featured Penny Rimbaud's essay The Last of the Hippies, telling the story of the suspicious death of his friend Wally Hope) and a largesize poster painted by Gee Vaucher. The album took over a year to record, produce and mix, during which time the Falklands War had taken place. This caused Crass to fundamentally question their approach to making records, for as a group whose very reason for existing was to comment upon political issues, they felt they had been overtaken and made to appear redundant by real world events. Ratcheting up the continued "leave no stone unturned" lyrical approach that characterized the group from the start, Crass again sounds like the group's about to explode in eight million directions. Ignorant takes over the lead vocal role again, his rough ramalama bitterly leading the charge against the loathed Thatcher government and the society that allowed it to come into power. Libertine, here appearing as Peeve Libido, adds backing vocals while De Vivre takes the lead on Birth Control and Sentiment. Free's guitar work roars along with the usual vim, as does the Pete Wright aka Sybil Right / Rimbaud rhythm section, while continual spiking of the musical punch via production or sonic collages, or even almost power pop catchiness at points, prevents things from being one note. In addition to the two records, this box set contains a poster and the 26-page booklet "A Series of Shock Slogans and Mindless Token Tantrums. (Crass Records/Reissue 2019)

San Francisco's first and only rock 'n' roll band, CRIME loomed over the entire Mabuhay Gardens scene with their blistering 1976 single Hot Wire My Heart. The group's loose, damaged rock 'n' roll was as immediate as it was controversial. aThey were punk by any definition, yet shunned the label with a guttersnipe sneer. Their meticulously cultivated aesthetic of S&M graphics and police uniforms produced some of the era's most indelible imagery. One of their finest moves was playing in the San Quentin prison yard. Formed by guitarists/vocalists Johnny Strike and Frankie Fix, CRIME enlisted bassist Ron the Ripper and drummers Ricky "Tractor" Williams (later of The Sleepers), Brittley Black, and Hank Rank. Joey D'Kaye later joined on keyboards and bass duties. For the first time, this LP release collects the sick energy of CRIME's three singles along with nine previously unreleased studio recordings from 1976 to 1980. The visceral churn and unwieldy leads on tracks like "Frustration" and "Piss On Your Dog" make Murder By Guitar the definitive statement from this prescient American underground band. For the first time ever, the three Crisis singles are officially re-released on Vinyl along with demos from 77 and 78 and a simply stunning sounding live set from Norway in 1979. The debut 7" from 1978 on Action Group Records, 'No Town Hall' features three stonewall punk classics. The next two singles 'UK79' and 'Alienation' make up the four tracks recorded for a John Peel Session in 1978. The lyrics are a product of the time against a backdrop of street fights with the National Front, violence at gigs, institutional racism within the police force, class division, industrial strife, sexual repression… Upon reflection not much has really changed in the last 35 years! Also included are demo tracks from 1977 and 1978 which are raw and basic punk just as you would expect. They have never been officially released on vinyl before. Sides Three and Four features a live set recorded when Crisis played Norway in 1979 which features all of the material that later turned up on ‘Hymns Of Faith’. The sound quality of the recording is so good it would pass as a studio recording. The record comes housed in a tip on heavyweight sleeve with detailed liner notes, reviews, interviews, and a few unseen group photos. It was the summer of 1976 when Dave Vanian, Rat Scabies and Captain Sensible recruited guitarist and songwriter Brian James, they played their first gig supporting the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club and quickly signed to Stiff Records and began writing the very first chapter of the punk rock history books. Their debut 7” - New Rose – was written by Brian James and backed by a proto-thrash version of The Beatles’ Help. It was recorded by Stiff’s in-house producer, Nick Lowe and set the punk dream alight at exactly 9.00am when record shops opened for business on 22 October 1976, stealing a march on the Pistols by becoming what is widely acknowledged as the very first punk record ever released.The band really came into their own with their second single - Neat Neat Neat - which had two cuts on the B-side, Stab Yor Back and Singalongascabies. Produced, like New Rose, by Nick Lowe, the vinyl had a message from one band member scratched in the run-out groove: “this is your captain speaking...” So what were Captain Sensible’s favourite acts on Stiff, one journalist asked him in 2007? “I wasn't interested!” he insists. “It was mainly pub rock in the early days, which we despised and sneered at in our young and snotty way…” After a special 7” - Stretcher Case Baby - cut to give away at gigs celebrating the band’s first anniversary, they went back into the studio, this time with Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason at the controls. Third single Problem Child was written by Brian James with Rat Scabies and featured new recruit Lu Edmonds on guitar. An incendiary two minutes of the band in their prime, it failed to crack the UK top 40 but did make number 27 in NME’s alternative singles chart. By the end of 1977, the Damned were ready to part with Stiff, just as Brian James and Lu Edmonds were ready to part with The Damned. Their last single was Don’t Cry Wolf, backed with another Nick Mason-produced track, One Way Love. This LP includes first seven The Damned's 7's on one LP! Includes double-sided insert. Young, Loud and Snotty is the first studio album by the American punk band Dead Boys. It was recorded and released in 1977 on Sire Records, produced by Genya Ravan.
