Out of stockPissed-off hardcore with a positive message. In 1986, UNDERDOG vocalist Richie Birkenhead joined the band on 2nd guitar. With this lineup, the 1st YOUTH OF TODAY full-length album was recorded, entitled "break down the walls". Pioneers of modern hardcore. They made straight-edge more than just a song. Completely remastered and remixed, this classic album finally sounds as good as it should. Available again with the original Wishingwell Records layout. xXx Fanzine (1983-1988) Hardcore & Punk in the Eighties isn’t a mere collection of articles, reviews and photographs from one of Hardcore America’s best-known fanzines - it’s a chronicle of punk’s evolution in the 80’s; a story of music and ideologies in motion. xXx’s story picks up while the first wave of hardcore was in full swing. Major players including Minor Threat had already released landmark records and bands were loading up station wagons to play now infamous venues like The Channel, A7 or D.C. Space. While based in Boston, xXx’s main writer and editor, Mike Gitter, not only concentrated on his own city’s burgeoning scene, spear-headed by bands like SS Decontrol and D.Y.S., but looked to other states and countries for xXx’s reportage. This hardcover, 11"x11", 288-page book documents a time when hardcore and punk were not mutually exclusive and bands and cities had a chance to develop their own diverse and strident sounds. This creative ethos and aural zeitgeist is literally spelt out on the 19-song compilation that’s included with xXx Fanzine, with either download card or limited edition 12inch; a wide variety of current hardcore, punk and hard music luminaries including Strife, letlive., Fu Manchu and The Riverboat Gamblers contributed their interpretations to some of the most influential songs to come from xXx’s original era. Now, in addition to reproducing (and restoring) countless interviews and pages from the ‘zine itself, xXx Fanzine re-interviews countless bands and musical prime-movers including Ian MacKaye, Keith Morris and members of Agnostic Front, Bad Brains and Cro-Mags to give the book a rare ‘then and now’ perspective. xXx Fanzine (1983-1988), Hardcore & Punk in the Eighties isn’t merely a look back at hardcore’s salad days, but a unique look at how punk’s music and message shook the mainstream itself. xXx Fanzine (1983-1988) Hardcore & Punk in the Eighties features: Minor Threat, Misfits, Necros, Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, Husker Du, Jerry’s Kids, Black Flag, D.O.A., G.B.H, Void, Negative Approach, 7 Seconds, D.Y.S., Scream, Metallica, Corrosion of Conformity, Minutemen, The Exploited, Anthrax, Subhumans, Dead Kennedys, SSD, Henry Rollins, Descendents, Bad Brains, Youth of Today, Motorhead, Dag Nasty, Snapshot, Samhain, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Bad Religion, Fugazi, and more… (Bridge 9 Press)

Widely known for their full-length record “Are These Our Lives?” TRIAL was a band who, at the time they were coming up from 1995-1998, were largely ignored and underappreciated. These were not the years of big shows and epic photographs. These were the years of five to thirty people at each show, and long drives motivated by a love of hardcore. During the mid 1990’s, there were hundreds of bands with a message and it was easy to get lost in the sea of them all, but TRIAL was one of the few who stayed true to what they had to say. On these recordings, their earliest material leading up to the recording of their LP, TRIAL formed the foundation of what was to come. These early songs are raw and forceful, each making a statement about an issue, cause, or emotion which the band felt was important to share on behalf of all listeners. As was true throughout their time together, TRIAL always had other people in mind, and these songs, infused with both a love of hardcore and a passion for social involvement, were their statement on behalf of those people everywhere. This double LP contains songs that originally appeared on their demo (1995), "Through the darkest days" 7" (1996), and "Foundation" 7" (1997), "I'm still screaming - live" 7" (1999), as well as two cover songs - one of them for a first time on vinyl. In addition, for the first time ever in print, the release contains a 28 page booklet featuring singer Greg Bennick’s tour journals from that time which document the experience of touring in the 90’s along with insight into the internal workings of the band. Step Forward. Umeå Hardcore Originals. In 1989 there were no such things as Umeå Hardcore. There was no scene and hardly any punk bands. A bunch of friends got together under the moniker of Step Forward to play fast and wild Hardcore. This is the first proper Straight Edge band of Sweden - started a couple of years after some members of legendary Svart Parad brought it to Scandinavia. They were in many ways the origins of the scene that in the 90’s exploded with bands like Refused, Abhinanda, The Doughnuts, Final Exit and Umeå Hardcore became a thing outside of Sweden. In their short lifespan between 89-91 they recorded two demos, put on numerous shows and did a fanzine called Umeå Hardcore Zine. For the first time ever the 2 demos are being released on vinyl. Remastered and with liner notes from Dennis Lyxzen and a bunch of unseen photos. The band was only around for a fraction of time but they had a huge impact on the small world surrounding them and Dennis of course went on to form REFUSED right after the break up. Members of STEP FORWARD were also involved in bands like FINAL EXIT, INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, E.T.A., REGULATIONS, AC4 or INVSN in next three decades! If you are into fast Hardcore done by a bunch of alienated teens from the north of Sweden you need to check out this record. Political hardcore punk from these Boston straigh-edgers. The follow up to 2015’s Discontent album, the production on this, their second album (from 2017), is a massive leap forward; a 12 song collection of taught, punchy hard-hitting rage. For fans of Modern Life Is War, Defeater and Have Heart. (State of Mind Recordings, Here And Now!, Useless Pride Records)

Originally released by Startracks in 1994 (Startrec at the time), this is the debut album by Refused. The record established them as one of the leading hardcore bands and quickly gained attention both in Sweden as well as abroad. Left-wing political lyrics combined with NYC hardcore influenced music. After being licensed to various labels as Epitaph, We Bite and Victory Records the catalogue is now back again with it’s original label Startracks. (Startracks Records)

Out of stockInfluential Swedish hardcore band Refused were formed in 1991 by vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, guitarists Jon Brännström and Kristofer Steen, bassist Magnus Höggren, and drummer David Sandström. Debuting in 1993 with the EP This Is the New Deal, the group issued the full-length This Just Might Be…the Truth later that same year. The Everlasting EP followed in 1994, and in 1995 Refused returned with another EP, Refused Loves Randy. After 1996’s Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent, they issued the EP Rather Be Dead; in the wake of completing 1998’s classic The Shape of Punk to Come, Refused disbanded, unable to reconcile their anarchist leanings with a career in music. THIS IS A PRE-ORDER! YOUR ORDER WILL SHIP ON/OR LATE OCTOBER/EARLY NOVEMBER, THANKS! Coming from the same time and same place as almighty BROTHERHOOD – true legends and pioneers of the Seattle Straight Edge in the late 80s. They introduced the idea of being drug-free and gave their 100% support to younger kids in the local scene who were excited to start their own straight edge band - REFUSE. They started in 1988 and next year they recorded and released a demo tape with eight fast, positive and energetic songs filled with youthful enthusiasm. Their simple but sincere lyrics encompass issues like drinking, drug abuse, friendship, unity and wearing the X to ‘keep the fight alive’. A true statement by these 15 year old kids. Their only vinyl appearance was “Voice of thousand” compilation LP on Conversion Records with the song "Trust" taken from their demo. After playing with Brotherhood at their reunion show in March 1990 at Washington Hall, Seattle, the band changed their name to UNDERTOW and became one of the most important figures in the North West HardCore scene of the 90’s. Some members were active later also in the bands like NINEIRONSPITFIRE, TEN YARD FIGHT, ENSIGN or THE HELM. REFUSE demo ‘89 coming out on vinyl now for the first time and it contains a 12 page booklet with an article by Robert Forbes and Jeff Terranova and interviews with the band from fanzines like Good & Plenty, Free Thought and Open Hand. Remastered by Smok / Studio As One. Vinyl edition layout by Jarosław Składanek. Carefully unearthed piece of history of the late 80s straight edge HC explosion and pioneering times of the NWHC scene! 1-2-3-go! Label: Refuse Records

Behind Pulso we find the latest formation of Appraise, a benchmark Barcelona hardcore band in terms of old school hardcore, made up of former members of such seminal formations as Cinder, Golem, Power, Constrict, Verdugo and Col·lapse. From the DIY ethic and inspired by movements like the Youth Crew of the late 80’s, Appraise have made a name for themselves among the now considered classic hardcore fans spearheaded by classics like Youth of Today, Minor Threat, Bold and Chain of Strength. They remained faithful to a genre (or subgenre) since that first homonymous reference, an EP released in 2012. Several tours in Europe and South America and four releases later, the last being the 7-inch ‘Leap of Faith’ from 2017, Appraise have decided to release a LP under the name Pulso. And that is why they allow themselves to play a little more with other influences, get out of the guidelines and ultimately practice a somewhat more adventurous hardcore and lyrics in Spanish. “Un nuevo grito, un nuevo impulso, es hora de cambiar. Todo tiene dos caras y debes elegir”, they sing on the track ‘Enfrentamiento total’, the title that gives its name to their first work, recorded at the EM Estudi in Terrassa (Serpent, Blowfuse, The Anti-Patiks) and mastered by the legendary Don Fury (Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, etc…) in his studios in the Big Apple. Other titles are as eloquent as ‘Atrévete’, ‘No caer, ‘Escapar o aparentar’ and ‘Recluso de tu inércia’. Positive hardcore, the kind that encourages inner reflection while prompting you to change things, to do them differently and run away from the herd, is what we find in ‘Enfrentamiento total’, a first feature for these newcomers but solid Pulso, a work made up of 9 cuts as forceful as they are melodic, released by three bands by labels and groups Bcore (Barcelona), CKUD (Barcelona) and Refuse Records (Berlin/Warsaw). Appraise remains in indefinite hiatus. Now it’s Pulso’s turn. Dare! (Refuse Records/B-core)

Out of stockWhile the genre of hardcore most often brings to mind aggressive, chaotic live shows and blistering sonic intensity, some of most promising output from those within the hardcore scene has been created when these musicians strive for something more melodic. Just as Youth of Today evolved into Shelter, 7 Seconds expanded their sound over time, and Minor Threat gave way to Dag Nasty and Embrace, an experienced group of hardcore diehards have come together to form Praise. The band steps in a more melodic direction than the notable list of other bands they've spent time in, especially evident on their newest offering, "Leave It All Behind." Originally formed in 2009, Praise set out from the beginning to showcase their less aggressive side, pulling deeply from the roots of mid-'80s DC, while still providing a contemporary spin. The band teamed with REACT! Records to release an EP and single (2010's "Growing. Changing. Healing." and 2011's "Two Songs"), followed by their fantastic debut LP, "Lights Went Out" in 2014, before slowing down to tackle personal struggles and explore other musical endeavors. Now, with a slightly modified line-up and renewed enthusiasm for their unique brand of melodic hardcore, Praise have created their most interesting release to date. Entitled "Leave It All Behind," this seven song EP marks a decidedly more tuneful tendency and exhibits a strength of songwriting that only comes from playing together for all these years. Where their previous releases felt indicative of their origins, this EP undeniably feels like something fresh and exciting. (React Records)

Praise is made up of members Andy Norton, Anthony Dye, Austin Stemper, Chris Bavaria, and Daniel Fang, who have made themselves familiar by their playing in bands like Turnstile, Have Heart, Mindset, Angel Dust, and many others. Following a full-length and an EP that explored their deep passion for classic melodic hardcore, "All In A Dream" is the band's most skillful and creative release yet, reaching back to the era of Washington, DC's Revolution Summer bands while always looking forward. Recorded throughout the pandemic in Baltimore, MD, with Kevin Bernsten and Brian McTernan, these nine tracks find the band artfully channeling their influences while fine-tuning a sound that is totally their own. Now available on vinyl. (React Records)

What is One Step Closer? In 1854, Thoreau asserted that most of us lead lives of quiet desperation, shielding our common sorrows in favor of a brittle veneer of stability, a lie that shatters us all in the shadows of a self-made shade of fearing what the world may find when we finally step closer into the light. From Walden to Wilkes-Barre, that 19th century sense of desperation to be seen just as one truly is, carries into our 21st century, - but unquiet and in the sound of a fury that is literally One Step Closer, - closer to obliterating the shackles of our shadows, closer to the light shining on our souls - showcasing our universal and human nature to love, loathe, and long for something more. In 2016, and in the midst of the winding wilderness that is adolescence, the hearts and minds that world would know as One Step Closer (Ryan Savitski, Tommy Norton, Ross Thompson, Brian Talipan and Grady Allen) took to the task of telling the world of the universal truths that could be found in the dim, dank depths of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania with the same liberated love for living a full and examined life which Thoreau wrote of before the dramatic wilderness of Walden, yet to the sonics of a revived and reimagined Turning Point that left listeners with a sense of refreshing originality. From PA to CA, One Step Closer scrawled in the halls of America’s hardcore their questions of truth, love, morality, evolution and human freedom, setting the darkness surrounding the togetherness of our species right to fire. And yet, out of five years of reaching for the relationship from the impossibly-distant, yet infinitely-close proverbial me and you comes assertions. Assertions stemming from the dullness of Wilkes-Barre, from the philosophizing of our fears, from our desperation to dare and not dream, from this place you know that sits at the core of our being and commands: no matter the sorrow or shame, we are all called to step into the light of truth, so move closer and quiet no more. In short, One Step Closer is a source and force of seeking the freedom to be as you are and dream to be. • Pat Flynn | 6.5.21 (Run For You Cover Records)

Known for its glamorous 1970s punk rock scene, New York City matched the grim urban reality of the 1980s with a rawer musical uprising: New York hardcore. As bands of misfits from across the region gravitated to the forgotten frontier of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With a a backdrop of despair, bands like Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Murphy’s Law, and Youth of Today confronted their reality with relentlessly energetic gigs at CBGB, A7, and the numerous squats in the area. Tony Rettman’s ambitious oral history captures ten years of struggle, including the scene’s regional rivalries with D.C. and Boston, the birth of moshing, the clash and coming to terms of hardcore and heavy metal, the straightedge movement, and the unlikely influence of Krishna consciousness.
With a foreword by Freddy Cricien of Madball, who made his stage debut with Agnostic Front at age 7, NYHC slams the sidewalk with savage tales of larger-than-life characters and unlikely feats of willpower. The gripping and sometimes hilarious narrative is woven together like the fabric of New York itself from over 100 original interviews with members of Absolution, Adrenalin O.D., Agnostic Front, Antidote, Bad Brains, Bloodclot, Bold, Born Against, Breakdown, Cause for Alarm, Citizens Arrest, Cro-Mags, Crumbsuckers, Death Before Dishonor, Even Worse, False Prophets, Gorilla Biscuits, H20, Heart Attack, Inhuman, Into Another, Irate, Judge, Kraut, Leeway, Life’s Blood, Major Conflict, Murphy’s Law, Nausea, Nihilistics, Nuclear Assault, Numskulls, Outburst, Pro-Pain, Quicksand, Raw Deal, Reagan Youth, Rorschach, S.O.D., Sacrilege, Savage Circle, Sheer Terror, Shelter, Shok, Sick of it All, Side by Side, Skinhead Youth, Straight Ahead, the Abused, the Cryptcrashers, the Mad, the Misfits, the Misguided, the Mob, the Psychos, the Ritz, the Stimulators, the Undead, Token Entry, Underdog, Urban Waste, Virus, Warzone, Youth of Today, and many, many more. Reissue of material originally released as a double 7" by this legendary band from Belgium - this time on a 12"! Nations On Fire is one of the most important bands in the history of the European straight edge / hardcore scene. Their releases have been hard to find for years and this 12" reissue is the first of several releases we have a planned for Refuse Records. N.O.F. started in the early 90's in Kortrijk by some members of RISE ABOVE and the singer of SCRAPS from France. Their fast and aggressive hardcore mixed with a good dose of catchiness and a direct, political message had so much power that it still impresses today. Their lyrics about topics, such as racism, environmental damage, vegetarianism/veganism or politics are as relevant today as it was almost 25 years ago - if not even more. Their slogan POSITIVE, POLITICAL and POWERFUL perfectly describes their music and their message. If you're interested in European HC history, this release is a must. (Refuse Records)

Out of stockThe late eighties were an exciting time to get caught up in the hardcore scene. While many of the early eighties pioneers of the music had moved along, the scene went through something of a renaissance with a new crop of energetic kids who had seized the power of the music and molded it into something that was relevant to the style of their times. Leading the pack in this regeneration was Revelation Records, who released a clutch of seven-inch singles and albums by bands like SICK OF IT ALL, GORILLA BISCUITS, BOLD, JUDGE and CHAIN OF STRENGTH that defined where the scene was at that time. Somewhere in central New Jersey, a group of kids attending Ewing High School were spinning these records incessantly while attending many of these bands? live shows. The combination set their minds ablaze with inspiration and so they started MOUTHPIECE in January of 1990. In between getting their band from the basement to the clubs, an abrupt change happened within the hardcore scene. Most of the bands MOUTHPIECE wanted to share the stage with had suddenly broken up or changed paths. With no concern for the changes in sound and style going on around them, they went along with their original agenda and unconsciously became the band to lead straight edge hardcore into the nineties until their demise in 1996. Can't Kill What's Inside: The Complete Discography contains the band's entire recorded output. The packaging contains photos of the band as well as a complete listing of every show the band has ever played in their existence. The entire product is both a labor of love as well as a sight to see and proves that what remains is certainly more than words. New pressing now available on coke bottle clear vinyl. Hardcore - more than a style of music, it's a way of life. Few current bands represent that more than MINDSET, and even fewer current records more than their debut full-length, "leave no doubt". This LP is 10 vital tracks of heart, wisdom and passion. No frills, just true straight-edge hardcore. Musically, the LP captures MINDSET at their most powerful, with one foot planted in the classics like YOUTH OF TODAY, ALONE IN A CROWD, FIRST STEP, with the other rooted in creating something truly unique. Lyrically, "leave no doubt" takes an unflinching look at the world and demands that we thrive rather than simply survive. Vinyl includes a digital download card. The world of hardcore is renowned for the preservation of its own history. The history has been well-documented in records that have all been reissued, websites devoted to its preservation, an oral history that has been passed down through generations of show-goers, and now, through books that explore even the most minute and obscure details of underground hardcore culture. This book documents an incredibly important aspect of hardcore's culture that has, until now, not been documented in any print format: hardcore band t-shirts through the diligent collecting and cataloging of hardcore enthusiast Orhun Oner. The 200 pages of "Life.Love.Shirts.: A Collection Of Hardcore Clothing" features the colorful t-shirts that were bought and sold in the sweaty clubs of the '80s and '90s, many of which are extremely rare and fetch astronomical sums on the collector's market. Many of the shirt photos are accompanied by stories from the bands, labels, and those who had a hand in the production and distribution, a glimpse of the rich tradition of hardcore band t-shirt production that continues on to this day. "Bootleg of a Bootleg" - contains the Judge - Chung King Can Suck It which was originally bootleged on Judge - Revelation Can Suck It LP. Includes 1-sided lyric sheet. 150 copies pressed. Judge had gone into Chung King with only one three-day weekend of studio time block-booked in order to record their first album, since band members John Porcelly and Sammy Siegler were set to tour with their main band Youth Of Today in Europe later that month. The studio was home to many of the popular (and now legendary) rap acts of the day, including the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC and LL Cool J; Youth Of Today had recorded their third album We're Not In This Alone at the same studio earlier in the year, so Porcelly and Siegler were already familiar with the place. According to a 2005 interview with Judge guitarist Porcell in AMP, all three of those acts had already been using three of the four separate facilities in the studio complex, leaving Judge with what was at the time the least technologically advanced of the four rooms. To complicate matters, the recording engineer the band had been assigned by the studio was a full-blown cocaine addict - an irony given Judge's militant anti-drug lyrics and moral code. During the second day of the sessions, the engineer on duty failed to show up for work, forcing the band to work with another studio staff engineer totally unaccustomed to recording punk rock music. After the sessions were completed, Porcell and Siegler listened to the finished mixes while on the Youth of Today European tour and came to the conclusion that while the performances were good, the recordings were not up to the standards of what they had done in the past with Youth of Today. The drum tracks in particular do not have the punch typical of other Revelation releases at the time, and the overall mix is considered to be thin. A phone call to lead singer Mike "Judge" Ferarro confirmed that he too was unhappy with the finished album, and the group chose to shelve the session and start over in a different studio. Unfortunately for Revelation, label owner Jordan Cooper had already paid for the mastering of the record and the plating of the vinyl stampers - a point in the manufacture of record too late to fully prevent the release of an album, especially for Revelation Records, which was then still a small independent label that Cooper was running out of his home. With advance orders already coming in for the as-yet unreleased album, Revelation decided to press a limited run of 100 white-vinyl copies of the album, assigning it catalog number REV:-1 (negative one), and sending these copies to tide over fans who had advance ordered Bringin' It Down. As is customary the record pressing plant produced a 10% overrun of the album and as a result 110 copies were delivered. Each copy has its number stamped on the bottom corner of the back of the sleeve however the printing on the jacket notes a pressing run of 100 so with the additional 10, those extra sleeves had the "100" altered to say "110". This record has been much sought after by collectors ever since. Judge then scheduled time at Normandy Studios in Rhode Island - the same studio where The Cro-Mags recorded their second album Best Wishes in 1988 - to record a proper version of their first album, Bringin' It Down. The two albums are similar in track listing for the first eight songs; Chung King... features two songs, "Holding On" and "No Apologies", that were not rerecorded for Bringin' It Down; "Where It Went", written after the Chung King... sessions, takes their place. The Chung King Can Suck It album remained a rarity (in spite of two different bootleg editions of the album), and was sought after both for its collectibility and the two rare Judge songs it contained, until 2005, when Revelation compiled all of Judge's recorded output - Chung King Can Suck It included - for the CD What It Meant: The Complete Discography. In May 2015 a copy became the most expensive sale on Discogs.com, fetching $6,048, a record that stood for a year until David Bowie's second album, David Bowie, sold for $6,826. Out of stockGORILLA BISCUITS' "start today" is one of the most influential records in hardcore. Hailing from NYC, GORILLA BISCUITS carved a niche within the New York scene. Blending the aggression and energy of bands like AGNOSTIC FRONT with a sense of melody likened to DAG NASTY, GORILLA BISCUITS still stands as a unique reference point for many hardcore bands that have come after them. In 1997 the hardcore scene was in dire need of a sense of humor. Four Vegan Straightedge dudes from Washington, D.C. (where it all began) stepped up to the challenge. Good Clean Fun was formed. They set out on a three-year non-stop tour to spread positivism to the whole planet as only hardcore band can do. Two 7”s and two full-lengths later and shows in 35 countries, from Austria to Australia, from New England to England, from the beaches of Hawaii to the fjords of Norway (and so on) the message was delivered. In 2002, the band returned home and released a Discography CD on Equal Vision Records. In 2004 the band stayed true to its word and did a reunion […] Last Exit Music proudly presents: The GCF compilation "Crouching Tiger, Moshing Panda" for the first time on vinyl! Manchester's straight edge troupee xCurraheex has been going through hectic times in the last two years, with a lot of membership changes, causing delays with recordings and cancelled shows. But these times belong to the past – vocalist Smit and drummer Mike are now joined by Mike Wright and Adam on guitar and bass respectively and are back on track! Hence, the title of the record! This 7” contains five songs, partly recorded more than over a year ago, that were only recently finished by the new line-up. Compared to their previous release, the 'Why We Fight' 7”, the guitar work is a bit more experimental, with quite some tempo changes and breaks, but despite that, it's still 100% energetic and fast straight edge hardcore. Artwork is again done by Javi and the record comes on green vinyl! (Commitment Records)

It’s time to grow towards the sun again. It’s time for Change. Closer Still is the debut LP from Change, the Pacific Northwest Straight Edge band made up of Aram Arslanian, Chris Williams, Jeff Caffey, Mike Jurek and Matt Bertell. The record is 13 songs of urgent hardcore influenced by Youth of Today, Uniform Choice, INSTED, Sportswear, Turning Point and Embrace. However, the song writing pulls inspiration from across genres keeping the record from painting itself in a corner musically. Lyrically, Closer Still was written over a year and at its core is about coping with loss, anxiety and depression and trying to make the changes needed to find a better path. The songs focus on growth, both personal and social, and encourage embracing who we are while also working on becoming the best version of ourselves. Written and recorded by Aram Arslanian, Dave Mitchell, Carl McBeath and Alex Schollen, the LP was tracked and mixed by Jesse Gander at Rain City Records, with lead vocals recorded Avrinder Dhillon at Ziyen Studios and mastering by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. The record features art by Eric Himle and the packaging was designed by Evan Wivell with help from Jon A Gaasland. Closer Still will be released on LP through REACT! Records in North America and by Refuse Records in Europe, and on cassette by Life.Liar.Regret Records in Australia. (Refuse Records/2020)

What do members of Trial, Test of Time, Expired Youth and Decline have in common? A love for classic hardcore and a band called Bystander. Their path was paved by Youth Of Today, Chain of Strength, Judge and others, yet Bystander breathes new life into the genre´s boundaries both musically and lyrically. What you hear on this five song EP is powerful oldschool hardcore coupled with heartfelt lyrics which take a look both inward and outward at the same time. This is a band calling for internal reflection while engaging the scene to be more than just passive bystanders themselves. (WAK) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87O5y_95vnQ

Although some define hardcore as a specific sound, most believe it's more than that; a set of varying ideas, ethics, principles, attitudes and, yes, music, that converge to form a community. "Burning Fight: The Nineties Hardcore Revolution In Ethics, Politics, Spirit, And Sound" by Brian Peterson provides some answers, but also brings up a whole new set of questions for those who've been drawn to the scene's political, social, ethical and spiritual ideas amidst the screamed vocals and abrasive chords. "Burning Fight" features commentary from approximately 150 people involved in the nineties hardcore scene as well as oral history articles about straight edge, politics, vegetarianism and interviews with a variety of influential bands such as Avail, Burn, Earth Crisis, Inside Out, Integrity, Los Crudos, Spitboy, Strife, Texas Is The Reason, Unbroken and more. 503 pages. 1997 was the year in which hardcore rediscovered itself. When the US-American legends Better Than A Thousand released their milestone "Just One" back then, it was the sole starting point for the resurgence of the Youth Crew and the Straight Edge movement. Acts like Kid Dynamite, Ten Yard Fight or Bane followed this path, but Better Than A Thousand remain unforgotten as pioneers. More than 20 years later, the band members release reissues of both "Just One" and its successor "Value Driven“ together with End Hits Records, giving fans the chance to experience these immortal records in a completely new splendour. If you want to understand the creative power behind Better Than A Thousand, you only have to look at the biographies of the individual members. Frontman Ray Cappo, as the singer of Youth Of Today, is a veteran of New York hardcore and invented Krishna Core with his band Shelter. He is also (co-)founder of the still influential hardcore labels Revelation Records and Equal Vision Records. Drummer Ken Olden and guitarist Graham Land are known as the masterminds behind hardcore punk heroes Battery. Furthermore, in the early 90s, Olden did pioneer work with Damnation A.D. for the metalcore genre, which is still flourishing today. Better Than A Thousand were born in 1997 out of the love for hardcore. After the dissolution of Battery, Olden and Land want to continue to work together on their music. Cappo, who is at the peak of his career with Shelter, is looking for musical fulfilment away from the major label circus. The result is the eerie, intense hardcore explosion "Just One", which Better Than A Thousand recorded in just five days during a one-week tour break from Shelter. You can clearly hear the efforts of his touring life in Ray’s voice. Again and again his massive vocals collapse under the strain - a circumstance that makes the record's rawness and intensity all the more apparent. The spontaneous side project quickly turns into more and Better Than A Thousand play three world tours and gigs at huge festivals within only two years. They never lose their inimitable DIY spirit during this time: Ray is not actually allowed to produce the second album "Value Driven" because of his contract with Roadrunner, but the band still secretly records the record in Ken's bed and bathroom and then self-releases it as a bootleg. Guitarist and drummer Ken Olden remastered both albums for the Reissues and even recorded additional guitar tracks. Besides the regular album tracks five rare bonus songs were added. The albums are released in different versions both digitally and on vinyl (with poster and download code) and CD (limited to 500 copies). (End Hits Records/2020)

Political Vegan Straight Edge Hardcore from Sweden. It's definitely one of the highlights of the Swedish HC scene in recent years, consist past and current members of such rad bands like DAMAGE CONTROL, SET MY PATH, SMACKDOWN, ANOTHER YEAR or GERILJA. Their sound is influenced by 90's sXe hardcore bands like Trial, Unbroken, Mouthpiece or Refused, but it can also appeal for fans of such current bands like Verse or Haveheart. They're definitely on their own terms with the sound and their message of compassion and awareness. Hard-working band with impressive amount of the shows on their backs. They can ranks high among the best european hardcore acts right now! (Refuse Records)

Out of stock"All Ages: Reflections on Straight Edge" takes an in-depth look at the second wave of American Hardcore -- the music that borrowed from the likes of Minor Threat, Black Flag and SSD -- bands like Youth of Today, Slapshot, Bold, Underdog, Side by Side, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Inside Out, Chain of Strength, No for an Answer and Supertouch. Most of these bands were awesome and unique and have yet to be documented accurately outside of their own recordings until now. The personalities and opinions expressed in this book are as varied as the music these people have since created. So many of the people who at one time held similar beliefs have since then explored virtually every direction in life imaginable and they candidly discuss their experiences in "All Ages." If you care one iota about not just straight edge, but American Hardcore in general, "All Ages" is a must. And if you can deal with some honesty and some fallen angels and even some humor, then buy it. And don't just look at it, read it. And then put it in that spot you have reserved for things that become part of your permanent collection.
