UZS’s music is a synthesis of post-punk, cold-wave and new-wave aesthetics. The trio’s compositions are built on sounds that are both sharp and cold; the raw rhythm structures driven by a nervous bass and a despotic electro-snare drum are layered with guitar cuts, minimalist old-school keyboards and two chanting voices, evoking the song tradition of the 80s – with references to both neue deutsche welle, the British offspring of punk rock, and Polish artists from the Stilon Gorzów label – here especially thanks to the Polish-language lyrics, which are equally critical and reflective and humorous, commenting on social reality in sparse and understated images.
