The band have made it a point to evolve with every album— sometimes dramatically so—never allowing themselves to become too comfortable in one genre or rest on any of their impressive career laurels. It’s an approach that has grown their audience but also challenged it with a sonic identity that can shift in wild, unexpected directions. Now with their twelfth album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, AFI are once again at the start of a bold new chapter, only this time they’ve even managed to surprise themselves. How does a band that’s known for creative upheaval still find ways to push themselves out of their comfort zones? Typically the group would start an album by immediately throwing themselves into writing and simply letting their intuitive musical shorthand guide the process, but for Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… AFI set out to purposely change their creative approach all together. This time it started with a conversation: how could they break new ground? The key to moving forward actually ended up coming from AFI’s collective past. “We started with something that sounded like Echo & the Bunnymen,” explains guitarist Jade Puget, who produced and engineered the album. “But eventually we ended up with this melange of death rock and postpunk—all this stuff from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s that we grew up on, like Sisters of Mercy, and Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.” The goal became making an album with a singular mood, something dreamy and ethereal, and the band members found themselves diving headfirst into influences that had always been deeply embedded in AFI’s musical core, but now were being brought to the forefront. Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… is dark and otherworldly, but also grandiose and stately, biting and beautiful in equal measure—in other words, it’s very AFI, yet not quite like any version of the band you’ve ever heard before. Their songs pull from musical and literary influences across the Iranic world, using both modern and traditional folk instruments. The style takes elements from crust and hardcore, with multitonal feedback reminiscent of traditional drone instruments of the region. Inspired by noisy hardcore such as LSD, as well as the macabre anarcho-punk of RUDIMENTARY PENI and the sombreness of UNION OF URANUS and DYSTOPIA. AMERETAT attempts to combine old and modern styles to create something new. Their lyrical themes explore war, power, love, despair, kindness, and our common humanity, utilising verses and excerpts in Persian, Avestan, Lori, Kurdish, and English. Label: La Vida En Us Mus

Charlie’s fascinating story is told in his own unique style, taking the reader through his early years as a ‘war baby’, his time at boarding schools for misfit boys, his adventurous youth, his struggles and escapades as a bass player, his turbulent personal life as well as his incredible journey with the U.K. Subs, as a solo artist and with his many side-project bands. Illustrated throughout with many unseen photos from his own collection, this will be without doubt, the most talked about punk rock book of the year. The book boasts a wonderful Foreword written by Rancid’s Lars Frederiksen with the book’s stunning cover artwork being supplied by Steve Dann (Magpie Art), of which the original hangs in Charlie’s house. Charlie Harper’s ‘An Anarchy of Demons’ contains 478 full-colour pages providing a unique insight into what made him the punk icon he is today. Charlie Harper is one of the most respected and loved musicians to have come out of the 1977 punk explosion. Prior to forming the U.K. Subs in that seminal year, Charlie had busked around Europe in the sixties and played in numerous bands through the seventies. However, he eventually found fame with the Subs, building up a formidable, devoted fan following through his unrelenting love of gigging. Briefly hitting the charts and playing Top of the Pops multiple times, his indefatigable belief in punk as being the people's music has seen the U.K. Subs carry on to the present day. Many now refer to Charlie as 'The Godfather of Punk', a fitting moniker to one of the most likeable personalities who has stayed true to that DIY punk ethic. His fascinating story is told in 'An Anarchy of Demons', in his own words, including his early years at boarding schools for misfit boys, his adventurous youth, his struggles and escapades as a bass player, his turbulent personal life, as well as his incredible journey with the U.K. Subs, as a solo artist and with his many side-project bands. This eye-opening account, packed with unseen images from Charlie's archive, gives you a perfect insight into what made him into the punk icon he is today. Charlie keeps on rocking, touring and creating. Ably supported and abetted by his wife Yuko, he never intends to let the punk-rock flame fade. They live in Seaford in the South East of England, but may well turn up at a gig near you soon! Anarcho-Punk: Music and Resistance in London 1977-1988 by David Insurrection is the distillation of three years work. It’s the story of an oft overlooked scene. Anarcho-punk in the 1980s truly rocked the boat. Much more than music it set out to change the world and in a not insignificant way did just that. It inspired a generation of activists, artists and musicians to take up the fight for a better fairer world. They tore down the walls. The Sex Pistols may have opened the door but the Crass punks charged through it. This is their story. As we return to the embattled 1970s and 1980s David takes us on a journey where we visit some of the scene’s most significant locations and hot spots, to places where change mattered and the spirit of revolt burned brightest. Born in Brazil in 2002, Anti-Corpos, the queer-punk-noise band, has fought for gender equality in heavy music since the beginning. Over the past 20 years Anti-Corpos has played over 300 shows, countless tours and have released some demos and two 7”s (both on Emancypunx Records). The band, now based in Berlin consists of; Adriessa Souza -vocals/bass (Eat My Fear, Dominatrix), Helena Krausz -drums- (Eat My Fear, Gegenüber), and Irem Kara -vocals/guitar- (Nervöus, Hoarse). With this formation the band brings even more ethnic diversity on western stages and spreads awareness for underrepresented minority groups throughout the European music scene. “Backlash” is their first full length album after all these years. Recorded with Jan Oberg of Hidden Planet Studios, it’s heavier, with a bigger, groovier and noisier soundscape but still with the same lyrical centre: Political, feminist, and the struggles and importance of being an immigrant band in the German/European scene. Anti-corpos’ lyrics focus on themes of feminism, anti-homophobia, anti-racism, and self-care. With fast and heavy riffs, the band shifts between dark grooves and chaotic noise, the trio delivers a visceral live performance. This is co release with Emancypunx Records and No Gods No Masters Records. Label: Emancypunx Records, Refuse, No Gods No Masters

Berlin’s Benzin brings us a blistering barrage of blazing beats and breakneck bursts of brio on Treibjagd, their debut vinyl for Static Age Musik. While Benzin rips through their songs at hardcore tempos (Treibjagd’s 12 songs fly by in a mere 15 minutes), they’re a punk rock band at heart, with songs built around hooky riffs with eruptions of surf-tinged melody a la East Bay Ray from the Dead Kennedys. But while both the songs and the dry, punchy production recall proto-hardcore punk from the US west coast, the vocalist’s German-language speak-singing infuses Benzin’s sound with the icy cool of their country’s rich art-punk tradition (Bärchen und die Milchbubis). Songs range from the spiky minimalism of “Freundschaft” (which sounds like a long-lost Group Sex outtake) and “Traumaspirale” to more fleshed-out, garage-y tracks like “Zeichen Der Zeit” and “Treibjagd,” whose sassy, hip-swinging rhythms and big riffs could win over any Hives fan. Aficionados of artsy and agitated contemporary punk bands like Warm Bodies and Spread Joy are bound to fall for Benzin’s charms, but Treibjagd is a treat for any punker with an ear for a hyperactive hook. Swirling beautiful guitars, soaring vocals and the most hypnotising songs. This record will keep coming back to you. Riding the cold wave of success after a self released tape and her debut LP, one woman weapon Cosey Mueller returns with release number three. Straight down to business, Softcore sees Berlin’s favorite femme fatale evolve the vintage synthpunk sounds of her previous cassette and vinyl releases to reveal lusciously textured soundscapes for a mature, confident long player that is polished yet playful. Ribbed and studded with sassy statements and cheeky guitars riding the cynical synth lines, Softcore thrusts back and forth in time between the experimental DIY spirit of 81/82 to the industrial dance heyday of 86-89. An instant classic as fresh as the cool night air. (Daryl Sulfate - Diät, Das Nest) Label: Static Age Music

You won't believe it! Cosmic Psychos return with astonishing confession "I Really Like Beer"! 40 years+ of stupid, clever punk rock continue with a brand-new "concept" album about beer, although each earlier album released by the guys has been kinda concept album about it too. The beer fathers of Aussie punk sounding like the Ramones fronted by Crocodile Hunter, they write songs in a distinctly down under manner about drinking, fighting, roadkill and best times. The lads bludgeoning take on punk has proven durable, influencing everyone from L7 and The Meanies to The Chats and Amyl & The Sniffers. The noisy punk trio was originally formed by Bill Walsh, Peter Jones and Ross Knight around Melbourne, ca. 1985. Robbie Watts replaced Jones on guitar in 1990/91, and after a hiatus, 2005 the Psychos went to the studio to record a new album with new drummer Dean Muller (ex-Voodoo Lust) replacing Bill Walsh. After the shock of the tragic loss of Robbie Watts in 2006, it was an option to drop the brand "Cosmic Psychos". But Knight was overwhelmed by the grief and support of the fans, so he decided, with full support from Robbie's kids, that "There's more beer to be drunk!". John McKeering (from The Onyas) had already been friend of the band for quite some time, and in late 2006 he was chosen to play guitar with Knight & Muller from that point on. With a legendary debut EP, almost a dozen studio albums, a handful of live ones too, plus a fan funded documentary with a rather prominent alternative scene cast under their belt, the blokes you can trust still deliver 12 new tracks of straightforward, lager-soaked punkrock for fans of Celibate Rifles, Radio Birdman, early Saints, mid-period Ramones, Hard-Ons, C.O.F.F.I.N. and Stiff Richards. The new record is classic Psychos, Aussie Punkrock as raw, loud and gloriously dumb as ever - with the occasional life lesson hidden under a pile of riffs. Label: Subway Records Barcode: 4059251704362

If Crow People had formed down south in 1979, not in Doncaster five years later, they’d be fondly remembered as one of the great 'anarcho punk' bands, sitting proudly alongside original innovators like the Mob and Zounds. There are shades of ‘Metal Box’ and dub in some of Mark’s early bass lines, echoes of a northern Mob and evidence of Bill’s Here And Now and Buzzcocks influences in the guitar. At times they evoke the heavy sounds of Killing Joke or Amebix before effortlessly slipping into a softer, haunting sound that wouldn’t be out of place on an early Cure album. Yet these are only fleeting reference points, they sound nothing like any of these bands. Trying to pin down the Crow People sound is pointless, there’s nobody else quite like them, they defied categorisation and couldn’t give two fucks about playing the game. Just look at their decision to play only benefit gigs. Their free festivals were Hulme’s Punx Picnics, held amongst the sprawling, decaying crescents and the self-organised Two Trees Festival in hometown Doncaster. Yet Crow People did manage to play far and wide with a variety of bands, and maybe this was the strength of their defying of categorisation. They could happily sit on a bill next to Axegrinder, Chumbawamba, Disorder, Culture Shock or The Wedding Present and people in the audience would take to them. They fitted everywhere and nowhere. This long overdue release on limited double LP and single CD contains nearly everything Crow People recorded in the studio from 1985 - 1994, consisting of their extremely rare and sought after 'Cloud Songs' 12" EP from 1987 and another twelve unreleased tracks. At last, we’re righting an injustice, and one of the UK’s great 'lost' bands is getting the reissue treatment they deserve. Limited 16 Track Double Lp With 8 Page A5 Booklet, Insert And Download Code. Label: Crackle Records
