BEOGRAD (Serbian for Belgrade) was a Serbian electronic four-piece band that was formed in the capital of the former Yugoslavia in 1980. Influenced by acts such as Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Ultravox and Human League, they played a pioneering role in the Yugoslav synth-pop scene. Their debut studio album, "Remek Depo," was released in late 1982 on cassette and in early 1983 on LP by the state-run PGP RTB label. It achieved great media success and the public loved it, as it was released at the time of the buzzing Belgrade Alternative scene (BAS) – a vibrant ‘underground’ movement of avantgarde artists and musicians which included seminal bands such as Sarlo Akrobata, Ekatarina Velika, Idoli, Elektricni Orgazam etc. Unfortunately, the band disbanded shortly after the album's release. The original line-up of Beograd consisted of Slobodan Stanić (synthesizer), Ljubodrag Bubalo (bass guitar, synthesizer), Milan Bubalo (rhythm machine, electric drums), and Dejan Stanisavljević (synthesizer, vocals). In 2012, Dejan Stanisavljević and Milan Bubalo reformed Beograd with a group of younger musicians and released the album "Pola/pola" in 2015. Currently, the band is on hiatus, with the latest lineup comprising of Dejan Stanisavljević (synthesizer and vocals), Milan Bubalo (Ableton Live sequencer), and Sana Garić (synthesizer, vocals). Beograd's debut live performance took place at the Belgrade Dadov Theatre where they were joined by an additional member who operated a rhythm machine in the backstage area. For the purpose of subsequent live appearances, the band continued to expand, often including drummer Miloš Obrenović. They primarily performed at Dadov Theatre and the Engineering Students' Club. However, after Slobodan Stanić left the band, Beograd continued as a trio. To compensate for Stanić's absence, they incorporated music samples previously recorded by the band into their live performances. During the spring of 1982, the band released a 7-inch single titled "Sanjaš li u boji" ("Do You Dream In Colour?") backed by "TV" on the B-side. The single, written by Dejan Stanisavljević and arranged by Saša Habić, was released through Jugoton and is now considered a rarity and collector's item due to its limited run of 500 copies. Their debut album was recorded between August and November 1982 at the PGP-RTB Studio V and released shortly after. It featured nine new songs, some with politically provocative lyrics, for example "Kontrolori" ("Controllers"), "Opasne igre" ("Dangerous Games"), and "Mrak" ("Dusk"). All lyrics, except for "Ulice su noćas..." ("Tonight, the Streets Are..."), were written by Dejan Stanisavljević. The record was produced by Saša Habić and is notable for its guest musicians - timpanist Borislav "Bora Longa" Pavićević, avant-garde saxophonist Paul Pignon, and veteran jazz trumpeter Stjepko Gut who contributed to its ‘soul’ feel, creating an unique warm/cold combination. Radio singles "Kontrolori" and "Opasne igre" became major hits and the album reached No.4 on the Dzuboks magazine's Top Ten Yugoslav albums list in March 1983. After the album release Dejan Stanisavljević left the group so they broke up. Following the breakup of Beograd the band members pursued similar musical paths with other groups. Slobodan Stanić joined forces with members of new wave bands Defektno Efektni and Urbana Gerila to form Berlinen Strasse, a band influenced by British post-punk and gothic rock. Ljubodrag Bubalo made guest appearances with Berlinen Strasse and U Škripcu. Ljubodrag and Milan Bubalo formed a synth-pop band Haj'mo, and Milan Bubalo joined Laki Pingvini. Dejan Stanisavljević collaborated with Du Du A and later pursued career in animation. Beograd's music has left a lasting impact and has been recognized and covered by other musicians. In 2011 their debut single was re-released on 7-inch EP, featuring both tracks from the original single as well as instrumental demo versions of songs recorded during the band's demo phase. Disciples of the DAF school (machine, vocals, drums) and appreciated for their incandescent live performances, the duo Bound By Endogamy have signed an opus revealing a wide range of references. These include ebm, synth-punk, minimal wave, electro-funk and power electronics. Like so many bad dreams, the eight tracks follow one another in a sinister, psychotic climate, shrouded in sonic violence and nihilistic poetic surrealism. The whole album is built on the original rhythms of the CR-78, the legendary wooden drum machine produced by Roland in the late 70s. The analog synth instrumental tracks are mostly haunted by the voice of Kleio Thomaïdes, whose intensity is one of the highlights of the record ; the amplitude of her vocal range extends from the susurrations of a stewardess on Xanax to the guttural borborygms of a demonic child devoted to exorcism. The vinyl is published by a coalition of three labels. Les Disques Mauvais Garçons, affiliated with the Born Bad store in Paris. Màgia Roja, the Barcelona-based collective label of Dame Area. And Les Disques Bongo Joe from Geneva. The unprecedented association of these three labels with singular and demanding artistic lines should be enough to arouse the curiosity of even the most impassive music connoisseur. Harsh Symmetry are an exemplary darkwave project, led by musician and producer Julian Sharwarko. A contemporary outfit, Display Model is the debut album from the alias (following a spate of recent singles), spanning eight synthpop haunters, with influences from 80s new wave, goth and shoegaze abounding. Sharwarko concept of "harsh symmetry" essentially gets at feelings of inadequacy and personal appearance, with the album delving deep into ideas of identity, alienation, and consumerism - with lyrics inspired by Moore’s tumultuous experience as a de facto fashion model, in his overt criticism of social media and musical spectacle. Harsh Symmetry, the darkwave project of musician Julian Sharwarko, is gearing up to launch its sophomore album titled “Imitation.” Recently relocated from Sacramento to Los Angeles, Sharwarko has crafted an album that seamlessly blends the nostalgic elements of influential bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and New Order, with the modern sounds of contemporary acts such as Twin Tribes and Boy Harsher. The forthcoming nine-song LP is set to be released via Fabrika Records, a label renowned for its roster of influential darkwave and post-punk artists. The album title “Imitation” is reflective of Julian Sharwarko’s introspective exploration of his own musical identity amidst constant comparisons to these influences. It poses a question about the nature of his work – is Harsh Symmetry an imitation of the past, or an archetype for the future, creating something so familiar yet so new that it feels as if it existed long before its manifestation? Despite these existential questions, “Imitation” is a modern album steeped in nostalgia, entirely recorded and performed by Sharwarko himself. The album features the phenomenal lead single, “Glass Tears,” a song that guides listeners through an icy, dystopian realm. Another standout track, “Make Up Artist,” presents a fascinating equilibrium, propelling forward with a lively tempo while maintaining a reflective atmosphere. The album also features a cover of Madonna’s “Open Your Heart,” reinterpreted through a hauntingly mysterious lens. “Scalpel” stands out with its vibrant metallic bassline and psychedelic aura, while “Crystal Smile” transitions into a dreamy vocal performance atop a distinctly 80s synth pad. Lung #13 (Τεύχος Μαρτίου 2022) Ο αριθμός 13 θεωρείται από πολλούς γρουσούζικος. Στο Lung δεν είμαστε προληπτικοί οπότε βάλαμε σαν στόχο το 13ο τεύχος να είναι το πιο πλούσιο στη μέχρι σήμερα διαδρομή του εντύπου μας. Το νέο -συλλεκτικό- τεύχος είναι αφιερωμένο εξ ολόκληρου στην εναλλακτική σκηνή των '90s, μια περίοδο μαγική για όσους την βίωσαν, ειδικά σε νεανική ηλικία. Εντός του θα βρείτε μια λίστα με 150 αγαπημένα ανεξάρτητα άλμπουμ, όπως τα ψήφισε η συντακτική ομάδα του fanzine καθώς και συνεντεύξεις με προσωπικότητες που έζησαν από πρώτο χέρι εκείνη τη εποχή. Όπως πάντα το Lung Fanzine συνοδεύεται από μια CD-συλλογή. Λόγω της ειδικής περίστασης ετοιμάσαμε μια διπλή συλλογή με μερικά από τα κορυφαία ονόματα των 90s (και όχι μόνο). Πάνω από 2 ώρες μουσικής και 28 ονόματα, μεταξύ των οποίων οι: Slint, Mudhoney, Shellac, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Ένα μίνι ακουστικό album με 5 τραγούδια γυμνά από beats και synths, σαν να παίζεις κιθάρα και να τραγουδάς στο δωμάτιό σου. Τα τραγούδια ηχογραφήθηκαν σε διάστημα τεσσάρων ημερών τον Οκτώβριο του 2021 από τον Τζίμη Πολιούδη στο σπίτι του και τα όργανα που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν είναι ακουστική κιθάρα, μπαγλαμαδάκι και μελλόντικα. Στίχοι που μιλούν για κροκόδειλους στους δρόμους, ημιλιποθυμίες, σιδερογροθιές, δωμάτια-πλανήτες. A mini acoustic album of 5 songs, naked from beats and synths, like playing the guitar and singing in your room. The songs were recorded over a period of four days in October 2021 by Jimmy Polioudis at his home with the use of acoustic guitar, baglamadaki and melodika. The lyrics talk about crocodiles in the streets, near-fainting, iron fists, rooms-planets. Although the songs flirt with the genre of the ballad, they are not love songs (with the exception of the cover of "Anixi (Spring)"), but a set of songs that express that no matter how emotionally vulnerable some people are, they do not give up, they resist and try to be the exception that will become the example in the brutal current state we are living. The London one-man synth and garagepunk project is launching its first proper full-length release after some of its already very delicious singles and EPs. I have to say that Theo Zhykharyev just topped the recent short players with this album. The record is actually just one thing - one complete highlight. Something between Screamers meets early Numan/Tubeway Army and a health dose of DC hardcore. Awesome stuff! Energetic and slightly insane - it's hard not to love it. “Στο σκοτάδι”/‘’in the darkness’’ is the third full-length album Selofan release on Fabrika. Once you put this record on, you feel like being grabbed by the hand and led through the darkest subterranean corridors to a sweaty nightclub. Romanticism and danger are in the air, a nihilistic vision of beauty. claustrophobia, separation, pre paid feelings, leaving and letting go is what this record is about, making you want to cry and dance at the same time, mixing the most sentimental strings with punk bass lines, synthesized trumpets, the finest analog wave with circus sounds. the voice half-speaking, half-singing, expressing either the strongest emotion or the complete absence of it, tells a story or remembers a dream, powerful and tender. Again the sentiments are expressed in different languages, which is meanwhile a characteristic of the band, the b-side surprisingly this time completely in Greek. Hello there! “Sowas von egal”, the album before you, is the result of a collaboration between the bespoke Hamburg record label Bureau B and the Hamburg party series Damaged Goods. The divergent trajectories of a record company on the one hand and DJs on the other are happily aligned through a love and passion for seeking out, collecting, releasing and playing rare, remarkable music which simply needs to be heard. For the three of us as DJs, we created Damaged Goods first and foremost as a danceable party where we could play music beyond the regular and repetitious repertoire of (dark) electro clichés. Our focus would be on seldom heard post-punk and synth wave from, or in the style of, the 1980s. We’d slip in these unknown or long forgotten treasures between more familiar hits from the genre to inspire and excite our guests. Eighties culture is very much a reference point today in music, art and fashion, so why not play the originals – especially as there is still so much to be discovered from that period? Many of the old records we’d play in the club had only been pressed in small quantities, often sold exclusively at the respective bands’ gigs. More than 30 years later, it is almost impossible to get hold of these tracks – unless you pay over the odds on certain websites or track them down as inferior MP3s on this or that blog. To be fair, at least they have gone to the trouble of getting hold of the songs and transferring them to a digital format. This is why it was so important to us that our collaboration with Bureau B would be dedicated to selecting tracks for “Sowas von egal” which are not readily available (on vinyl) and have not been rereleased (or the reissues themselves are genuine rarities). It gives us great pleasure to announce that we succeeded, 100%! The groundwork for this project was interesting in itself: sorting through and listening to songs, making lists, setting priorities. Then getting in touch with labels and trying to find the musicians of yesteryear. This wasn’t always so easy: some had disappeared from view, others had actually died. When we did find who we were looking for, the reaction was generally positive, although some were surprised that anybody was interested in their music today. At this point we would ike to express our deepest gratitude to mastering maestro Tom Morgenstern, who worked wonders with a jumble of disparate source material to achieve such sonic consistency. Fans of our parties will recognize more than a few of the tracks on “Sowas von egal” and we are really proud to have put together this collection. The project took around nine months to get everything in place and we hope you will have as much fun listening to it as we had researched, compiling and releasing it. Οι «Γεμάτος Αράχνες, Ρε Φιλε!» ειναι ενα ηλεκτρο-καταστασιακό-χόρορ-σύνθ πάνκ σχήμα 3 ατόμων που σχηματίστικε τον Σέπτεμβριο του 2019 σε μια απεγνωσμένη προσπάθεια έκφρασης ειλικρίνειας απέναντι σε μια καθημερινότητα που απλά έχει παραγίνει. Πρώτοεμφανίστηκαν ως support act στους Le Prince Harry στο Ίδρυμα 2.14 τον Οκτώβριο του 2019 και τον ίδιο μηνα ηχογράφησησαν και κυκλοφόρησαν το ντεμπούτο τους σε μορφή κασέτας στην «Είσοδος Κινδύνου» σε περιορισμένο αριθμό αντιτύπων. They first appeared as a support act at the "Le Prince Harry" gig at "Ίδρυμα 2.14" (Ιdryma 2.14) on October 2019 and at the same month they recorded and released their debut album on the independent punk label "Είσοδος Κινδύνου" (Eisodos Kindynou) on a limited run of tape cassettes. In the old world, before the COVID 19 situation arose, the band managed to perform 5 times in total at different cities around Greece.
