  • Imagine a time when putting together the best cassette compilation ever (Today it’s called a playlist) was the sole purpose of the day. Getting it right would mean the difference between a good day or bad day. It was also the best way to impress girls and show your mates how hip you were. A time when dreaming, looking cool and disregarding the rules was everything. Decades later and life catches up, broken relationships, broken families. You make a playlist to reflect this but you have no one to send it to. ‘Mystic Science’ is that playlist. Lyrically its looking back, its now, it might be tomorrow. Characters with front, angry, confused, fragile, aghast. Ruminations, temptations, visions, superstition, and blind faith, you might say the deep end of the pool. They sound personal but maybe they are stories, characters, imagination? The sounds are warm, seductive, melodic, human, mostly intimate, sometimes raucous, folk n roll? There’s a lot to discover here. Give ‘Mystic Science’ your time and attention and it will become your best friend. This is Davey Woodward and The Winter Orphans third album, following their self -titled debut in 2018 and 2020s ‘Love and Optimism’. Davey Woodward- Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica Julian Hunt- Lead Guitar Steve Dew Drums Jonathan (JB) Bewley- Bass Harry Furniss- Cornet Charlotte Nicholls-Cello, Backing Vocals. Produced and Recorded by Joe Garcia About The Recordings: As with the first two albums Davey’s vocals were recorded live together with his guitar and drums to capture the ‘feel’ of a song. There are no ‘vocal drop ins’ to rectify any wrong notes or miss-timed phrasing, they are simply the best ‘take’ of the song. The best takes were often the second or third version, some went into double figures. This is the approach many artists used in the 60s/ 70s before multitracking and recording instruments separately became the industry standard. Precision has been sacrificed to give the songs room, warmth, a naturalness that is often a struggle to achieve when playing to a backing track. Some songs are completely live and others find Julian and JB adding their parts later. You will note that there is some layering of Julian’s lead guitar to create a more intricate sound. JB also plays acoustic bass on a number of songs, the bleed over into his mic was sometimes too much so these were recorded separately. There are also a few numbers where Davey adds a majority of the instruments himself. These were spur of the moment songs that the band had never heard before. Steve played using brushes to create a mellow warm feel on the kit. On one song he plays the beat on a book and adds bongo’s to others. Harry’s cornet and Charlotte’s cello and backing vocals were added later. However, the spontaneous feel was kept as their parts were created in the studio, with no prior rehearsals with the band. Joe set the studio up so everyone had eye contact with each other and created as much separation as possible. For a small studio space this is quite a technical feat. Having recorded the previous two albums he instantly knew what the band meant when asking for ‘a big warm guitar sound’. He recorded Julian’s guitar through a Fender Twin Reverb and Davey’s guitar through a Vox AC30. The recordings took place in January 2022, 4 days playing and 4 days mixing. Background: Davey’s musical history starts with 80s indie group The Brilliant Corners and Late 90s/00s The Experimental Pop Band. He also has a rock n roll band called Karen whose debut album was released in 2022. Interest in The Brilliant Corners continues, the C86 scene and indie guitar sounds of the 80s has gained a new audience. The band are seen as an integral part of that scene, however listening back to their albums there is a diversity in the songs that point to the eclecticism of Davey’s future musical output. Cherry Red Records have released CD compilations of the band’s singles and early albums. The BBC have released the John Peel and Janice Long sessions. Last Night From Glasgow will be releasing a double vinyl album of selected songs from their albums later in 2023. The Experimental Pop Bands 1996 single ‘Boutique in my Backyard’ was Melody Makers single of the week and was covered by Sophie Ellis Bextor of the band The Audience. The Experimental Pop Band went on to sign to hipster label City Slang Records, receiving much critical press from the likes of The Guardian for their album ‘Tracksuit Trilogy’ 2001. The band played Glastonbury and did sessions for John Peel. The band released several albums but failed to gain a wider audience, their final album ‘ Vertigo’ was released in 2012. Davey released his first solo album ‘6 miles east of here 5 miles north of nowhere’ in 2010. A mixture of acoustic folk and pop and low fi orchestral backing that points the way for his work with The Winter Orphans. Davey also has 2 volumes of electronic and soundtrack music he has recorded over the last 2 decades but never released. Record review on Louder Than War Label: Old Bad Habits

2018 Remastered Version. The first of Bowie's legendary Berlin trilogy and the one that broke the most ground. It also caused so much consternation in the NME offices that they ran two reviews, one praising it to the skies, the other bewildered by Bowie's move towards the chilly electronic sounds that bore the influence of krautrock, particularly that of Kraftwerk and Neu! Collaborating with Brian Eno and produced by the genius Tony Digitally remastered edition. Heroes is the twelfth studio album by the iconic singer/songwriter, originally released on RCA Records in October 1977. The second installment of his Berlin Trilogy recorded with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti, Heroes continued the ambient experiments of Bowie's previous album Low (released earlier that year) and featured the contributions of King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. Of the three albums, it was the only one wholly recorded in Berlin. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio in what was then West Berlin, Heroes reflected the zeitgeist of the Cold War, symbolized by the divided city. Co-producer Tony Visconti considered it "one of my last great adventures in making albums. (Parlophone Records)

The set and a 1 track digital single of the single edit of the 2019 mix of Space Oddity for streaming and download will be released by Parlophone on 12th July, 2019, the day after the single’s 50th anniversary. Space Oddity 50th anniversary double 7” set will come in a box including a double-sided poster featuring an original Space Oddity press advertisement and a Ray Stevenson shot of David taken on stage at the Save Rave ‘69 concert at the London Palladium on 30th November, 1969, the backdrop featuring a N.A.S.A. astronaut. The set also includes an information card and a print featuring an alternative shot by Jojanneke Claassen from the Space Oddity promo single cover session. A facsimile of the original ultra-rare unissued UK picture sleeve has been used for the cover of the original mono single, which, along with the label, features the original Philips trademark specifically cleared for this 50th anniversary release. The single itself has been cut from the original analogue single master tape. The jacket housing the 2019 remixes by Tony Visconti is a new design featuring an alternative Ray Stevenson shot from the Save Rave ‘69 concert to that on the poster. First released as a 7-inch single on 11 July 1969, Space Oddity was also the opening track of his second studio album, David Bowie. Initially inspired by Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey, the song gained huge popularity when it was adopted as the unofficial theme of the Apollo 11 Moon landing mission which launched five days after the single’s release. Over the past 50 years Space Oddity has been on a journey as long and as far as its main character, Major Tom. Originally written and demoed in November 1968, the song has gone through many guises from appearing in the filmed for television special Love You Til Tuesday in an earlier recorded incarnation with John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson, to being recorded in Italian (Ragazzo solo, Ragazza sola), winning an Ivor Novello Special Award for Originality in May 1970, being Bowie’s first hit on both sides of the Atlantic (#5 in the U.K. in 1969, #1 in the U.K. in 1975 and #15 in the U.S. in 1973), having no less than three videos made for it and in 2013 was performed by Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield, while aboard the International Space Station, and became the first music video shot in space. Major Tom remained a motif for Bowie throughout his career revisiting the character in the songs Ashes to Ashes, Hallo Spaceboy and in the music video for ★. Bowie's classic 1976 album featuring: golden years, tvc15 and the title track - 6 tracks - 35 minutes - like albums used to be - digitally remastered. an eerie dispatch from the furthest reaches of bowie's cocaine paranoia, station to station has not become easier to listen to with the passing years. at this stage, bowie was wrapped up in his peculiar—even by his standards—thin white duke period, which revolved largely around dressing like a fugitive war criminal and not blinking, at least not in public. appropriate to such a detached, deranged persona, bowie set about making what was effectively a soul record devoid of any soul whatsoever. he did it, as well. station to station spawned one lingering hit, in "golden years", but the album was littered with malevolent miracles. bowie crooned like a replica sinatra on "word on a wing" and "wild is the wind" and may have single-handedly invented the new romantic movement with "tvc15". he sounds throughout on the verge of cackling dementedly and wandering off into the night; station to station is an absorbing postcard from somewhere you're kind of glad you haven't been. Now available on 180g Audiophile vinyl. (Parlophone/2017)

180 Gram Vinyl. With 1970's 'The Man Who Sold the World', David Bowie set aside his pop and singer-songwriter aspirations and headed in a harder-rocking direction. Producer Tony Visconti provided a thick, dense setting with guitarist Mick Ronson playing the role of guitar hero to Bowie's megalomaniac frontman; think Keith Richards and Mick Jagger sprinkled with fairy dust. The new approach flowered on 'Hunky Dory', but the outline for the master plan is here. The title track, 'The Width of a Circle,' and 'All the Madmen' are essential Bowie, as he slips from cryptic to straightforward, celebratory wordplay. Textured cover, LP in poly-lined inner sleeve. Additional replica of the original paper inner sleeve included. 180 Gram Vinyl. (Parlophone/2015)
  • The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (often shortened to Ziggy Stardust) is the fifth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 16 June 1972 in the United Kingdom by RCA Records. It was produced by Bowie and Ken Scott and features Bowie's backing band the Spiders from Mars — Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey. Most of the songs were written around the same time as its predecessor Hunky Dory. After that album was completed, recording for Ziggy Stardust commenced in November 1971 at Trident Studios in London, with further sessions in early February 1972. Described as a rock opera and a loose concept album, Ziggy Stardust concerns Bowie's titular alter ego Ziggy Stardust, a fictional androgynous, bisexual rock star who is sent to Earth as a savior before an impending apocalyptic disaster. The character was inspired by numerous musicians, including English singer Vince Taylor. Most of the album's concept was developed after the songs were recorded. The character was retained for the subsequent Ziggy Stardust Tour. A concert film of the same name, directed by D. A. Pennebaker, was filmed in July 1973 and released in 1979, and a live album from the same show followed in 1983. The music on Ziggy Stardust has been characterised as glam rock and proto-punk. Unlike its predecessor Hunky Dory, which was generally piano-led, the songs on Ziggy Stardust are primarily guitar-based, mostly due to the departure of keyboardist Rick Wakeman. The songs were influenced by Iggy Pop of the Stooges, Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground, and Marc Bolan of T. Rex. The album's lyrics discuss the artificiality of rock music, political issues, drug use, sexual orientation and stardom. The album cover, photographed by Brian Ward in monochrome and recoloured by Terry Pastor, was taken in London, outside the home of furriers "K. West". Preceded by the single "Starman", Ziggy Stardust peaked at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart and number 75 on the US Billboard 200. The album received widespread critical acclaim and, following his performance of "Starman" on the English television programme Top of the Pops, propelled Bowie to stardom. Not wanting Ziggy to define him, Bowie created a new character, Aladdin Sane, for his next album, which Bowie described as "Ziggy goes to America". It has since been called one of the most important albums in the glam rock genre and one of the greatest albums of all time. The album has been reissued several times and was remastered in 2012 for its 40th anniversary. In 2017, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" by the Library of Congress. • Double 180 Gram Vinyl. 'Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture' is a live album by David Bowie, corresponding to the film of the same name. The music was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 3 July 1973, although the album was not issued by RCA Records until 1983. This is nearly the complete goodbye concert and earns it's place in rock history. How many other artists create an alter ego and how many reach the greatness of this strange, red haired alien? The set list has considerable overlap with the 'Santa Monica '72' album because of the focus on the 'Ziggy Stardust' studio album but this also draws on the 'Aladdin Sane' album. (Parlophone/2016)
  • "Dee Dee Ramone's infamous solo debut, Standing in the Spotlight is a controversial, confusing and extremely interesting piece of music history. Considered an absolute failure at the time of its release, it is a fun and pioneering album in which Dee Dee mixes his unstoppable punk personality with strong doses of old school hip hop and a touch of his passion for '50s music. A weird, charming and mind-bending release from one of punk's most iconic, troubled and talented figures, no Ramones collection is complete without this oddity." Often considered to be one of the biggest commercial flops in music recording history, Standing In The Spotlight was the 1989 debut solo album from Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone. Released under his rap moniker Dee Dee King, the bizarre project served up an amalgam of old school hip-hop, late 50s garage rock and even doo-wop, all blended together in chaotic fashion, and led by Dee Dee's new gangster bravura. It's been noted that the hip-hop-centric attire seen on the cover was adorned by Dee Dee at his last few Ramones shows shortly before departing, which drew major ire from his bandmates. Tapping Marky Ramone to oversee percussion samples, and even enlisting Debbie Harry (Blondie) to provide backing vocals on 'Mashed Potato Time', and, 'German Kid', with the latter featuring vocals sung in both English and German (nodding to Dee Dee's growing up as an army brat), the album was crafted with every earnest intention of launching Dee Dee's solo career. Conceptually inspired whilst in rehab and used as a project of focus when embracing his newfound sobriety; the sheer enthusiasm and fearlessness of Standing In The Spotlight grants it a pass and a place as a truly absurd offshoot oddity from a vital member of the one of the defining punk bands.
